The night I finished this, my mind was left reeling from it for a couple of hours and the next day I was unable to get it out of my head.

Shutter Island is a departure from the Kenzie/Gennaro series and
it's one of those novels that will certainly leave you pondering the whole story once you're finished it.
The less you know about the story, the better. Suffice it to say, this is an excellent read and there are very few novels I have read that made my head buzz for hours after.

An isolated island, a raging hurricane, a locked room, secret codes, a mental hospital, and rumors of mysterious medical experiments frame the story. Written in a very different style compared to Lehane's previous novels Mystic river and Gone baby gone. The plot is not the simplest of plots, i was scratching my head intrigued because the story flips through past present and surreal. It is a disorienting, complex story grounded in the reality of the times...cold war USA in 1954. From pondering o

What a terrific supense novel by Denis Lehane. Even though I had seen the movie many years ago I had always wanted to read the book and was so glad I did as I had forgotten the plot anyhow and the book proved to be so well written and intriguing that it had me on the edge of my seat.

The novel is set of the Massachusette's coast in an army facility turned hopital for the criminally insane. This book is full of twists and turns and really packs a punch. I loved the fact theat the author at the ver

Dennis Lehane took a big leap in his work with this first novel following his stunner of a masterpiece, Mystic River, tackling a period piece for the first time, with a story that somehow both narrowed and widened his scope. It's about two U.S. Marshalls stuck on a job at an island-based criminal asylum, tracking down an escaped convict during a dangerous hurricane.

I haven't read this in a while but I remember it being such a great example of a popular best-seller that fully deserved the attent

Two U.S. Marshalls have been dispatched to Shutter Island - a location much like Alcatraz which houses an inescapable fortress for insane prisoners. The job of the partners is to find a female patient/murderer who has disappeared, while also having the unfortunate timing of having to battle a hurricane simultaneously. What the duo initially came to investigate and what they actually end up discovering are VERY different things.

I've never seen the movie, but I had a general idea of what happened due to seeing certain scenes while my husband was watching.

Shutter Island is the story of U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule who are sent to Shutter Island. Shutter Island is the place for the insane, who are a danger to others. The people here have committed horrible atrocities, and one of these people Rachel Solando has escaped. Rachel drowned her three children. As a story bears down on the island Te

Shutter Island is an amazing and fast-paced thriller. There isn't much I can say about this book without spoiling it, trust me: the least you know about what this book is about, the better.

What I enjoyed the most about this book was the characters and the amazing setting. Two detectives are sent to investigate a mental institution on an isolated island, which gives this story a very sinister tone. Both Teddy and Chuck (the main characters) were awesome fro

I'm not even sure what to say about this book without giving anything away. US Marshal Teddy Daniels shows up at rocky island that's an asylum for the criminally insane to track a patient that disappeared from a locked cell. While on the island, he gets the sense that the doctors are hiding something and sets out to obtain evidence that they are experimenting illegally on patients. As Daniels uncovers secrets, you become more confused about what is actually happening at the hospital.

"Shutter Island" started off lame. Then it got better. And then it reverted to a convoluted plot recycled from pretty much any psycho-thriller out there. This is the first and likely last Lehane book I've read and I've surmised that he, like Stephen King and John Grisham, simply writes screenplays disguised as novels, probably writing the story while fully aware that it will be purchased by a movie studio within a year of being published. Lots of cliffhanging chapters, laughable dialog, a little ...more

Forget Mystic River. Shutter Island is the Dennis Lehane book to read. Set in the mid 1950's on a secluded island that serves as a mental institution for the criminally insane, Shutter Island combines elements of psycho-drama and horror with a good mystery and well-rounded characters. U.S. Marshals Daniels and Aule come to the island to investigate the mysterious escape of a violent patient from the hospital, only to be trapped on the island by the worst hurricane in thirty years. The two Marsha ...more

Shutter Island isn't as good as Mystic River, which I read just before this. Mystic River is an entire neighborhood of fleshed out characters that propelled its tragic plot. Shutter Island isn't so three dimensional. What it does have going for it is a taut plot full of suspense and mystery. This is a puzzle novel. Not a novel puzzle like The Davinci Code where the puzzle is the thing and everything else is secondary. The puzzles of a first-rate thriller exist not as the primary purpose but to p ...more

J'ai lu Shutter Island il y a 6 ans mais je me souviens avec précision de l'effet qu'il a eu sur moi. Aucun thriller ne m'a jamais autant marquée.

I honestly thought my opinion of this book would be greatly influenced by my having seen the film, but it wasn't. I was completely blown away reading this one. This was probably one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever read. I loved how I got confused and then thought I figured it out, but then was totally confused all over again, until right near the end, at which point everything came to light.

What matter is the road not the end. Once you read that...don't watch the movie or search images in Google, please. Spoilers everywhere,

Lo importante no es el final, sino el trayecto. Y dicho eso por nada del mundo veas la película o busques imágenes en Google acerca de ella. Sí bien no es que se arruine el misterio pero si quita un poco del clima.

my first Lehane book and I was totally blown away by it. this book belongs to a genre which I usually don't read and this book (also the author) has inspired me much that I have decided to read more from this dark, gothic and gritty world.

won't talk much about the story as am afraid I will end up giving away spoilers. so I will talk about two main characters around whom the story revolves. First Teddy is an extremely well written character and I loved how the author has peeled off layer after l

Believe me when I say that I'm not a fan of mystery novels. In fact, I'm the kind of idiot who's blind to every single clue and who'd rather just wait until the mystery is solved instead of thinking about who might be guilty, because when I do, I always end up being completely wrong. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy mysteries, but they're just not the kind of book I would pick up. However, I am incredibly glad I read this book for one of my cla
Question: Why have I never read Dennis Lehane before? No idea, but it is a situation that I will endeavor to rectify as quickly as possible.

This book is one that will most absolutely stick in my head for a long time to come. I loved it, from start to finish. I've already seen Shutter Island, so first of all, for the entire length of the book Teddy was Leo to me, and second of all, I read this already knowing what happened. It spoiled it a little for me because I can't help analysing every little thing that the staff or Chuck or Cawley did to see how it tied into the ending. I wish I could have unwatched the movie, the book would probably blow my mind.

So, Lehane has done it again. This is great. This story revolves around two US Marshals i

So, Shutter Island is officially the first book I have read in 2016.

This is another one of those novels in which I saw the movie first so I knew the twist going in. As with Mystic River, even though I knew what was going to happen after the film, I still thought the book was excellent. This one didn't grab me quite the was Mystic River did, but all in all it was still a very entertaining thriller.
