This collection of stories and essays is a perfect break from the seriousness of life. Allen Smith offers us a unique perspective on the mundane things most of us have experienced, many of which make little sense though we accept them without thought. I'd be laughing and nodding my head in agreement as I read. Then I'd stop to consider the insight and poignant messages often wrapped up within the humor.

Each piece is well written and easy to relate to. Sit down with this one and treat yourself t...more

Allen Delivers Humorous Takes on Modern Life That Makes Me Laugh Out Loud

This is another one of Denver/Vail based humor writer Allen Smith's funny books, injecting humor into our super fast paced 21st century lives where it seems that we have more conversations with our smart phones than with other human beings.

As a Internet Dating Coach, naturally, I was drawn to Allen's chapters poking at the 21st century dating contrivance of Internet Dating. It is Chapter 3, Expelled from Match.com. It's a r...more

Watching Grandma Circle the Drain is one of those books that uses the author’s personal observations and experiences as a lens to get the reader thinking about society and life in general. It is a social commentary without actually commenting directly on society.
The absolute best part of this book is the prologue/forward. It is witty, has the tone of an well-educated and thoughtful person, and reads as if it would be relatable to just about anyone who cracked the pages of this book. After readin...more

Watching Grandma Circle the Drain is a collection of funny stories about such topics as online dating, navigating carts through grocery stores, and deciphering hard-to-comprehend instruction manuals.

Author, Allen Smith, is a real comedian. In the first part of the book, he shares some of his personal experiences. I particularly enjoyed his advice on how to handle telemarketers: "Many telemarketers are willing to work with you as long as you place an order. Since they make only $2.74 an hour, pl...more

I didn’t know what to expect going in to this book as it’s not a novel, per say, but rather a compilation of short vignettes dealing with random topics, but I have to say that it’s absolutely hilarious and well worth reading! At first glance, one might not realize the hilarity that resides deep within the pages, though I think the cover and title are telling in that aspect. But if you open up the table of contents, you’ll see interesting chapter titles, such as “Expelled from Match.com,” “Televi...more

Sent this book by the author, I wasn't sure what to expect but soon found myself laughing at the array of random yet observant thoughts about the strange /wonderful world in which we live.

I particularly liked the unbelievable list of 'weird' true-life laws, and had to wonder how and why they were made.

This collection includes a humorous look at dating, family, jobs and a whole host of other topics and each of them is very funny.

Overall, I would say that if you enjoy laughing - sometimes out lou...more

Laughter is infectious. After reading Watching Grandma Circle the Drain by Allen Smith readers will definitely be full of laughter. This collection of short stories will place readers in the front seat of a comedy show with full excess.

The first section of stories are about dating and becoming an adult. The second section of stories, which are in news format tell about different topics of everyday interests. My favorite story is “Television Shows that Didn’t Make the Fall Lineup,” which gives d...more

After laughing out loud just from reading the introduction I knew that Watching Grandma Circle the Drain was going to be hilarious. I find that I enjoy non-fiction if it's humorous and luckily, Watching Grandma Circle the Drain is really funny.

The majority of the chapters were essays on personal observations and the author's experiences. I found that they were really insightful as well as adding a comedy aspect. The part after that was a collection of news articles that were made up by Allen Smi...more
