I don't even know what to say about this story.

The idea of it was what drew me in, but the writing didn't hold me. Le Sigh. Kinda sad, actually.

Something So Right is a very relate able novel to so many ( or at least it was to me). If you have ever been in a abusive relationship you know how hard it is to get out of it, and then when you do it's even harder to mover on because you are so scared to death of getting hurt you rationalize not wanting to hurt the other person. It makes a great experience. It's nice. Not exactly a mind-blowing piece of literature, but a decent short novel with a solid plot, likable characters and love that is both sweet and hot at the same time.

Sam Denning and Lily Carver are long time best friends. Sam was always around to help whenever Lily needed him. They are both undeniably attracted to each other yet neither of them is willing to take the first step and actually turn their friendship into something even more meaningful. They both want it. Deep inside they know they are perfect for each other. They fantasize about each other (and trust me when I say, these fantasies will make your cheeks burn!), have fun together and support each other in times of need. What's sweeter than a romance that develops from an already wonderful and strong friendship? If only things were that simple! Lily was recently hurt, she carries a lot of baggage and she's can't seem to be able to put the past behind her. She's damaged and unwilling to throw herself into yet another potentially hurtful relationship. There are no obvious reasons to believe that Sam would treat her with anything else than love and respect, but we all know how it works: once bitten, twice shy. Not to mention that it never even crossed her mind that Sam could possibly be interested in her or return her feelings in any way. Unfortunately, the same goes for Sam. He doesn't want to make a move, because what is she doesn't like him back? He could lose his best friend and he certainly doesn't want that! And so we're stuck in a loop, with two people who love each other and don't really know what to with that. What will happen to these two? Curious? Read Something So Right and find out for yourself. It's definitely worth it. There's a lot going on on these 160 pages, more than you could imagine!

What I liked the best about this story? Sam. He was so fan-freaking-tastic! So sensitive, caring, supportive, loving, warm, cheerful.. Not to mention totally gorgeous! A perfect man in every way! Where do you get a guy like that?! Lily, on the other hand, well, she went through a lot and didn't quite know how to deal with all that. She wasn't exactly my favorite heroine. I didn't like the way she acted and some of her decisions were simply hard for me to understand, but in the end I kind of got where it was coming from. I wished she was a little bit more open and trusting and wouldn't be so consistent in pushing Sam away or determined not to assign meaning to whatever was happening between the two of them. I mean, yeah, I get that you went through some heavy crap and you're having trouble getting over it, but cut the guy some slack. He's not just any random guy met on the street, he's your best friend. Someone who was always there for you! And he's so freaking hot! :)

But these are just minor annoyances, nothing that would make me want to throw the book out the window or shred it to pieces with gardening scissors. I genuinely liked Something So Right. It was a charming, sweet little read. It's not the most beautiful love story ever, nor is it some sort of life-changing, heart-wrenching epic romance, but it doesn't aspire to be one at all. It's a simple, cute love story, filled with some cheek-reddening scenes and vivid, realistic descriptions. The plot is solid, the characters are believable, the storytelling is smooth - I don't know about you guys, but in my world that makes a pretty awesome book!
I'm excited to read more of Elyse Mady's books and I'm definitely going to be picking one up soon!(less)

Something So Right is a novel that is centered around one of my all time favorite tropes in the romance genre. But the biggest baggage of all for the two of them are the feelings they have for each other.

Sam knows he's in love with Lily, he's just never done anything about it. Lily doesn't realize what's she's felt for Sam goes much deeper than the love of your best friend. But all of that comes to a head when Lily makes her proposal for the two of them to become lovers for two weeks. Immediately Sam thinks he's finally got his woman, where Lily keeps wondering what kind of mistake are they making. It's that torment that digs at your heart and has you wondering if these two will ever get their act together.

A very satisfying read that was over too soon.(less)

Something So Right is one of those typical friends-to-lovers stories that I’m a big fan of. Sam and Lily have been best friends since forever. They have been through many ups and downs together and their friendship never wavered. After Lily’s failed marriage, Sam was everything she needed, her rock to hold on to. Still, both Sam and Lily are keeping secrets from each other. Sam has kept his attraction and love from Lily and Lily didn’t tell Sam the truth about her marriage to Brent.

For the first time since knowing Sam, Lily feels the attraction between them so strongly that she can no longer resist him. Sam can’t believe his luck when Lily kisses him but his idea of happily-ever-after is not what Lily has in mind. After her disastrous marriage, Lily doesn’t want to commit to anyone again but how can she resist this new sexy Sam? She wants a no-strings affair and to go back to being friends only after two weeks of fun. Sam agrees, planning to convince Lily of how good they could be together. Already after their first night together, they both know that things are never going to be how they were.

The story sounds enticing and fun but I felt a little lost throughout reading. Sam is a very endearing and appealing character while Lily is hard to like. I didn’t like her very much because I felt she kept stringing Sam along and changed her mind about their relationship constantly. At the beginning, her reasons for being afraid to commit were very understandable and her reactions logical. When she later returns Sam’s love, she immediately finds another reason for holding herself at a distance. While I was aware of her troubled past, I didn’t get to know her good enough to be sympathetic and to really understand and follow her logic. Sam could have been a little more aggressive for my taste. He had more than one opportunity to clear the air between them but he never did. All of that just added to the confusion and I had the feeling that the story never really flowed smoothly. Because of that, I never managed to get properly involved in the book either and could easily be distracted.

My first book by Elyse Mady was satisfying but in many ways only average. Something So Right is a nice, short and light story but, as previously mentioned, I had some problems with it that unfortunately lessened my enjoyment of reading one of my favorite romance constellations of friends becoming lovers and discovering a sizzling attraction and a different kind of love between them. I didn’t regret reading this book but while the potential is definitely there, the book felt raw and in some ways unfinished.

She knows she doesn't deserve a good man, and isn't looking for anything long term... that's why she would never think about hooking up with Sam.. he's the type of guy who would want a relationship to last forever - every girls dream come true.. except hers...

When one nice she was feeling sorry for herself and Sam goes outside to see how she's doing, something changes and things get a little carried away......

Wow! loved the story line with this book. I think it started out a little fast. I would have loved to have seen more memories about their time together as kids. I do love the way her dad helped him out, and the flashbacks they did have,just wish there would have been more.. it seemed that Lily's feelings had turned pretty quickly.

I did like how they changed their POV's, but Lily's seemed to have gone missing after that night at the bar- what made her change her mind so fast??

Anyways- I thought it was cute. Love the best friends before lovers theory in a relationship - even if it does get really awkward at first. sam is a great guy - his feelings are real,a nd I'm glad he didn't give up on her :) (less)

From page 2, you are confronted with what is assumably some great physical attraction between these two characters. Unfortunately, it was so fast that I didn’t even have time to learn anything about the characters except that they are sex crazed. I think my favorite plot of all time is friends to lovers, and this one was a goodie! Sam and Lily have been best friends since they were fourteen, but Sam has been in love with her for just as long. When they take things to a physical level, they are both surprised at how hot the fire burns between them. But Lily doesn’t want forever and she knows that Sam does.

When Sam pushes for more and Lily finally reveals a big secret she has been keeping from him, things get more than complicated. They want to remain friends, but will their friendship be enough when Sam wants more, or will they both walk away broken hearted?

One of the things I love the most about friends to lovers books is that the sexual tension between the hero and heroine is constant from day one. They are already friends, they know everything about one another, they don’t have any (or many) secrets from one another. To me, that puts them on the fast track to being great relationship partners. Mady does a wonderful job with the sexual tension. it’s palpable and smokin’.

I loved Sam’s character. He was everything I would want in a hero, my best friend, supportive of me, there for me at my worst moment, and totally head over heals in love. What more could a girl want? There was one thing that I wanted more from Sam though, and that was to fight harder for Lily. I understand how scary it can be to take a friendship to the next level, but every time Lily went to push Sam away, he went willingly. He didn’t stay and fight, he didn’t tell her how wrong she was, he just went.

I had a little bit of a harder time connecting with Lily. I absolutely felt heartbroken for her and the ordeal she went through with her ex-fiance. I can see how broken she would be, but at the same time I don’t think she gave Sam or herself the chance. She was all over the place, so wishy-washy, I wanted her to make a decision and stick with it.

I really enjoyed this book, but there was one thing that made me cringe. When you are such great friends, typically the lines of communication are a lot more open. But with Sam and Lily, it was almost like they were afraid to talk once they started the “benefits” part of their relationship. I wanted to smack them, make them talk to each other!

All in all I really enjoyed this book. Mady does a wonderful job writing sexual tension between friends that was fun to read, and the romance between them was beautiful as well. I loved the hero and although I would have liked to see a little more from the heroine, I still enjoyed the two together.

I give Something So Right a C+(less)

Though plot of this story believable, I didn't like Lily very much as a character and could hardly keep up with her flip-floppy emotions. I liked Sam, but not enough. There were some very hot scenes, but some of the terminology was certainly off-putting to me.

I liked Elyse's last book, but there was something that was missing with this one. I couldn't completely follow the story and the progression was a little off. It felt pieced together and there was an evident lack of slow.

Angst....there is a TON of it in this book. Lily was in a 2 year relationship 5 years ago that left her really emotionally scarred. That relationship was abusive and domineering and Lily doesn't trust herself anymore. She is afraid that if she ever gives herself to someone emotionally like that again that she won't be strong enough to stay her own person.

Sam has his own scars. He was raised on the wrong side of the tracks by a single mother who never had enough to get by. Growing up, he worked at several jobs, but was continually put down for his place in society. Now he has his own very successful contracting company, but those feelings about worth still linger at times.

Sam & Lily have been best friends since they were 14. He has been in love with her pretty much that entire time, but has never acted upon it. She's drawn to him too, but he's a forever kind of guy and she never plans to commit to forever with ANY guy.

My issues with this book:
*Sam & Lilly are best friends...they have always done everything together. She was in the relationship with Brent for 2 years, and Sam never saw or even guessed what was happening? In the book, Sam is presented as totally in touch with her and her feelings, so I just can't buy that he didn't see that she was being both mentally and physically abused.

*Lilly is all over the place. She's in. She's out. She wants him. She loves him. She doesn't want a relationship. She doesn't want sex. Honestly, I am not so sure that 2 years in therapy have been enough...

*Sam doesn't fight for her. When she tells him no, he flings insults or simply walks away. I realize that he's frustrated, but if he truly loves her, he would fight for her.

*I didn't understand or see what changed at the very end to suddenly make everything okay. There was nothing earth-shattering that happened to change the situation that hadn't already been said just a few days before. The resolution just didn't work for me.

There were times when this book was just gorgeous. It's sexy and starts out with all the right things. The descriptive language and writing was amazing. Elyse did a fantastic job in this area, but somewhere along the way, the book simply lost its way and I was as frustrated as Sam. I still plan to continue to read Elyse's work because she has an amazing sense of prose. This one just didn't quite do it for me...

But one night, after a few drinks, Sam and Lily have a very hot encounter. Sam is thinking it’s the beginning of something special with Lily, but Lily shuts Sam down, hard. She thinks it was a mistake. Sam is hurt and he’s at a complete loss as to why Lily reacted the way she did. So when Lily comes to see him the next day and proposes a no strings affair, he is completely at a loss. But his feelings for Lily are too strong and he’s willing to play her game and see where it takes them.

Something So Right has the very familiar friends to lovers theme. Sam and Lily met when they were 14 and 12 respectively. Their early relationship is told in a few flashback sequences that I found very moving and brought tears to my eyes, twice. It made their long term friendship believable even though they’d only really spent summers together until Lily moves to Muskoka after the incident with her fiancé. When Lily finally confides the truth about what really happened with her X-fiancé to Sam, he is devastated that she’d never told him, but for me it was that instance that showed the relationship start to change for both of them. Unfortunately, the whole ‘friends with benefits’ that Lily proposes to Sam didn’t really sit well with me. I understand where the author was going, but by this point in the story we have a very clear picture of Sam and we know how much he loves Lily. I couldn’t see him settling for Lily’s ‘no strings attached’ sex proposal, not when we know how much they really love each other. Additionally, no matter how hard Lily fights it, she can’t keep her heart in a box and when she realizes where this relationship could go, she puts up all her walls and once again closes Sam off. There is a nice little twist at the end to bring the H/H together. All in all, an enjoyable read, with likable characters.

She feels that Sam is a forever kind of guy who deserves a woman who can give him the same. But when mutual caring and attraction lead to a very hot encounter, Sam is ready to push for more from Lily. Lily puts the breaks on fast but then has a change of heart later when she realizes she misses sex and proposes that they enter into a friends with benefits situation, no strings attached, and then they’ll end their affair after a period of time.

I loved Sam. He had a hard childhood, took care of his younger sisters and has worked hard his whole life. He’s loyal, and steadfast and head over heals in love with Lily. But he’s no saint—his dirty thoughts about Lily and the things he’d like to do with her are just enough to scuff up that squeaky clean image and make him a swoon worthy hero.

Lily on the other hand was a bit of a mess for lack of a better word. She has quite a lot of emotional baggage but still, I had a hard time excusing her behavior toward Sam at times. She feels Sam is deserving of a forever kind of girl, and so she keeps her distance romantically even though she has feelings for him. But then she flips and proposes a friends with benefits relationship when she decides she misses sex. The reason this didn’t totally work for me is because Sam and Lily are supposed to be best friends so she must have picked up on at least some kind of “I have stronger feelings than friendship for you” vibe from Sam. I had a hard time believing they could be so close and she could be totally oblivious to his feelings and so her proposal seemed selfish to me. On the other hand, it only fueled my sympathy for Sam and I really wanted him to have his happily ever after.

Something So Right is filled with emotional angst and smoking hot sexual tension. Two best friends who have a mutual admiration for one another with one secretly in love with the other for years is a wonderful set up for a very romantic story. And this is a romantic story with a nice little happily ever after at the end. Despite a few problems I had with the heroine, I enjoyed this emotional story of two friends who eventually find love with each other.(less)

I picked up this book because the blurb sounded cute to me. I'm a sucker for those friends to lovers storylines and this is exactly that. It's been a few years but she's still healing from that whole ordeal and nobody knows the extent of the abuse that Brent threw at her. Not even Sam. But when things get heated between her and Sam, she realizes that she wants a sexual relationship with no strings and the only guy she wants to bang is her best friend Sam. Sam, who is already in love with Lily and has been since they were kids. Perfect start to a story, don't you think?

This book is one of those fast, cute reads that won't take you much time at all to dig right into. Both Sam and Lily are characters that leap right off the pages and right into your heart. Sam was that stand up hero that little girls dream of marrying when they're older and Lily was one of those strong heroines that you cheer for. Their romance heated up the pages of this book and I really enjoyed reading it. Getting to know both characters was a treat and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

I liked that their friendship was good and strong before they started their romance. I felt for Sam as his frustration built with trying to make things happen with Lily and after everything that Lily went through with Brent, I understood her hesitance with getting into a new relationship. There were times that I wished she had more faith in Sam, to realize that there wasn't a man on Earth that would love her and protect her with as much passion as Sam would but more than anything, I understood why Lily was so gun shy about men.

Mady did a wonderful job of making me connect with her characters and I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of contemporary romance and this author's books. It's a solid read.(less)

This book made me want to move to lake country. The setting was great and I really enjoyed reading about Sam. My problem was with Lily, I just didn't like her. I appreciate the author trying to show how Lily's history and previous relationship affected her five years later and all that but she didn't really have very many redeeming qualities IMO. Also the internal struggles of both characters were a bit repetitive and exhausting.

I spent a lot of this book pretty frustrated with Lily. She really was a train wreck. Not only a train wreck, she was a BLIND train wreck.

As a reader I've always had a problem with poor little rich girls and as the survivor of an abusive marriage I have problems with victim heroines as well. And Lily, she was both of these in spades!

Sam was a wonderful hero. Steadfast, loyal, loving and understanding. He was easy to love and because I did love him so much I got even more annoyed and frustrated...more

Something So Right takes one of my favorite tropes (friend/love from afar) and twists it on its ear.
