I tried to like the heroine, but every now and then she would say somethibg so vapid, or act so ignorantly that I could not help but think she, along with the other women in the book, was plain stupid at times and too naive to be considered cute.
Another issue I had was how the leading characters' romance either seemed forced or simply there. It felt like so much more could have been done with the characters past connection, or at least a more explosive confrontation between Lily and Charity.

Julia London's new book "The Revenge of Lord Eberlin" is totally awesome! I loved the storyline of an angry, vengeful man who will stop at nothing to destroy the lives of anyone who gets in his way. OK, I looked forward to this one coming out so I could read the conclusion to what I assumed would be a trilogy, only to discover that there is yet another story in the series. Fortunately, that one's also out already (reading now).

Tobin, Lord Eberlin, has planned this revenge for a long time, he sees Lily as responsible for his fathers hanging fifteen years ago. The ordeal with the stealing of the Ashwood jewels, the trial and hanging of her friends father is something that still haunts Lily. Not that she thinks she testified wrongly, but that her aunt acted strange and it all ended with her move to Ireland, being orphaened for the second time in her eight yeared life.

All I can say is Julia London has me hooked with her new series, Secrets of Hadley Green. I'm loving how she is bringing to life not just the main character/couples in each book, but she is creating some really well-developed supporting characters I'm enjoying. I also think as far as creating a series, that going the route of creating a small town is the way to go, instead of brothers/four friends/schoolmates, etc. I would think this would give an author more creative freedom.

As I said earlier, I'm enjoying the supporting characters, especially the gaggle of women; they so remind me of the women in Cranford. Unlike some books where these characters are irritating, in this book I'm very interested in what each one of these characters is doing.

Now on to The Revenge of Lord Eberlin and our main characters, Lily and Tobin. And, I will say this, how you feel about Tobin will affect whether you like the book or not. If ever there was a couple who will make you scratch your head and wonder how the author is ever going to get them together, this is it. You see, our heroine was a witness against our hero's father and his father was hung due to that testimony. And, there is never any fake witnessing - Lily really did see something. However, she saw that something with the eyes of an eight year old. Needless to say, there is some heavy baggage that both Lily and Tobin carry. Tobin is also out to destroy Lily. There were so many moments in this book that had the ability to touch your heart. The relationship between Lily and Lucy, an adorable little girl. When Tobin proposes to Lily and her manner of accepting...loved this scene. Tobin's party that hardly anyone came to. And, when we do have a HEA, it isn't a sugar coated happily ever after with birds chirping and squirrels climbing on your lap while you sing "Zippidy-doo-da." There are still things that are not settled, and certain people still hold grudges, and Tobin is not magically accepted into Lily's world. And, that was one of the things I really liked about this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The thing that appealed to me was the evolution of the relationship. Tobin's feeling towards Lily were multi-layered. Once he got past some of the layers, he worried about his past effecting Lily, whereas Lily was already a piranha due to her cousin's actions in the first book. Lily's layers grew with the story due to her discovering the truth about her childhood memories. With each of these layers, we eventually saw the two of them form into a couple united again...more

She finds a scandal in the making as her cousin, Kiera, has pretended to be Lily in an effort to try saving the broken estate. The estate is sinking fast, with tenants leaving for greener pastures and the money running out quickly. After her testimony condemns a possibly innocent man to die for theft of the rare Ashwood jewels, the eight year old was forced to move to Ireland with her cousins. Lily only returns to the estate which brought such turmoil to her because of obligation. She soon finds out that the curious Lord Eberlin is really the son of the man she condemned, and he is bent on revenge! Lord Eberlin believes that his childhood friend deserves total ruination for the pain and suffering that occurred after his fathers' death. He has built himself into a powerful lord, albeit a bought title, but a wealthy and successful man none the less. His proposition for saving Ashwood is simple, either Lily can submit to him bodily or the estate will be completely ruined!

This was a great read. I am many times apprehensive with series: sometimes the flow is a little off, the story seems to run along the same course of action as previous titles, or the characters aren't cohesive. "Lord Eberlin" was none of these things. The basis of this story is, as I see it, is of returning home to reconcile the past. To me, these characters reached out and grabbed me! Lily is a tortured, guilty soul, who has been haunted by her recollections of life at Ashwood. She is a strong woman, full of emotion and love, but someone who is distinctly vulnerable. A very self-assured, sassy female, she knows what she wants, and is not afraid to use some subtle manipulation to get it. Enter Tobin, Lord Eberlin. A man who has brought his niece, sister, and himself up from the depths of poverty to live among the upper echelon of society. He has used Lily as the drive behind his betterment of self. Another wounded soul, he is racked with pain and rage at the stunning Lady of Ashwood, who he views as the main trigger of his family’s' demise. He has strength of will that keeps him from feeling his emotions, effectively shutting them off because he cannot process them. It is obvious to the reader that these two need each other; their hurt and redemption lie solely within each other. Both are reliant on the other for not only the means to make Ashwood profitable, but also to heal the hurt and damage of years past.

The story line was a little slow at first, but I felt it worked with the need to build a budding trust and understanding between the characters. For me, the emotional turmoil Tobin encounters trying to come to terms with a dark childhood and his growing feelings of attraction to Lily touched me. Ms. London did a fantastic job of showing his vulnerability and pain, not to mention the grief that still controls him. The descriptions of what can only be described as anxiety attacks truly made me feel as if I was in his position and experiencing them as well. Lily makes a very likable character, from her want to fit in with local society, to finding that one person who makes a love that is enduring. At times her manipulations and endless questions (does that count as harping?) regarding Tobin’s' remembrances of long ago events made my teeth grind. She was relentless in her pursuit of information, and because of this was not always aware of the hurt her information gathering was causing. But I was overall impressed with her dealings with Tobin's sister, a person full of resentment and hate directed solely at Lily. She showed great restraint, class even, when faced with direct scorn and venom when dealing with her. Lily is like many of the young ladies I see today, trying to find their way in this world. I especially liked the fact that the unfolding of the hero’s' emotions was gradual, not hurried and wham! all out there at once. Tobin was allowed to discover and grow in his new found acceptance of this person as an important aspect of his life.

"Lord Eberlin" was not what I expected. The raw emotions that the reader can feel pouring off the pages at times made me feel as if I was part of the story, and because of this emotional pull, I could not put this book down! I would easily give it 4.5 stars.

She's a selfish creature whom steps into the mess she jointly made with her cousin, but unable to understand how her inability to take control over her own life led to this problem. We pick shortly where the last book leaves off and our introduction to Lily Boudine. I was a bit disappointed in Lily. She's a selfish creature whom steps into the mess she jointly made with her cousin, but unable to understand how her inability to take control over her own life led to this problem. She is a reactionary character who needs someone else to do something to react to, which is why she languishes in regards to her dilemma over Ashwood's ruination. Lily is a fairly flat heroine who lacks that emotional spark that was present in the women of the first two books in this series. Despite that flaw, she still makes a good counter blanace to the hero.

Lord Eberlin, better known in Hadley Green as Tobin Scott, is the son of the infamous jewel thief hung in Hadley Green some 20 years ago. Due to his family's dishonor, he is an extremely driven man. By pulling himself out of poverty and into the realm of the rich, he has devised a plan to destroy Ashwood and specifically the girl who's testimony got his father hung. While Lily is a reactionary character, Tobin is proactive driver of this story. He moves, Lily reacts, which is why the two work well as a couple.

This story is really about the hero and heroine forgiving not only each other for old acts well beyond their control, but forgiving themselves for the parts they played in it. Tobin has a hard time accepting that his father was not the man he wanted him to be, while Lily has to confront the upsetting and confusing memories Ashwood provokes.

I would have liked to see Lily be a bit feistier to match Tobin's blinded devotion to destroying her. But she comes through at the right moments with a spine of steel without the wilting you might expect of a conservative character.

And the romance is wobbly during the courtship, until Tobin is able to move past the anger driving him and embrace the fact that Lily did not do anything wrong. Once he makes that decision, you see all his passion for destroying her turn to loving her, including an amazing idea to show his love which I would just adore having myself! And no I won't give it away, but I will say it is mystical, fun and something that will stand for their love for a long time.

My one big complaint is that the plot of the stolen jewels really gets lost in this series. While we do get another new twist at the end (which in my mind answers what happened to the jewels) I would have liked to see this twist developed sooner in the story to at least introduce the new characters for the next book.(less)

Lily has inherited the Estate of Ashwood and finds it more than she can handle, especially since the neighbouring estate, Tiber Park, owned by none other than Count Eberlin, is doing anything and everything to make it impossible for her to save Ashwood. I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if the author didn’t spend the first third of it rehashing the first book in the series. I always enjoy when the author gives me reminders of who characters are from previous books but I wasn’t expecting a full synopsis. By the time the story took off I thought it was a bit boring. I should have liked this book more than I did. Julia was at her usual witty best, but the characters and the story didn't really do anything for me. I felt that Tobin was unlikeable, and when you wish she would instead fall for the Duke's brother instead of the hero, you know there's a problem. It was all a bit ho hum. Then there's the whole storyline of blaming an 8 year old for something she had little or no control over. Oh well. The next book in the series sounds good!

This has been the most intriguing series. There is a mystery to be solved and you, as the reader, get to follow along. So far, at the end of each installment (read 'book') you are left hanging. I don't know where I got the impression that is was a quartet of books? However, I am now waiting for my next installment: "The Seduction of Lady X". This could go on ad infinitum or ad nauseum...we shall see. I think you might like it...try it to see! Maybe you can solve the mystery before the H/H does!

We met the heroine of this book Lily, in the last adventure with her cousin Kierra. Lily is trying to build her inheritance, Ashwood, up to its old glory but her nemisis, Tobin Scott, the newly minted Lord Eberlin, has other ideas namely revenge. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the meanness of Lord Eberlin and the fact that he had what's known as panic attacks today. I liked that Lily was no shrinking violet and decided to fight back.

I listened to the audio version narrated by Justine Eyre and you can count on her to deliver a great narration.

I recommend this book and know that I'll be listening to this book again in the near future.

The hero wants revenge on the herione......Tobin Scott returns to Hadley Green, where Lily Boudine's childhood testimony helped to send his father to the gallows for stealing the Ashwood jewels. I liked this book a lot. I didn't realize it was a second in a series, and I don't think I'll read the first one since you find out everything in this one making it unnecessary to go back.

I thought Lord Eberlin was a classic sad and tragic hero, and I was interested in him. Some of the events were an obvious ploy to move the plot here or there, but I really enjoyed it.

So far so good, I'm at about 20%. My only nit and it's kinda a biggie is the hero, he' supposed to be super cold and wicked, but he just seems like a shrewd businessman who has spells (I think these are panic attacks). Also, the heroine seems to think her past is just as tragic as his and there is just no comparison.

The initial conflict between Tobin and Lily carries vestiges of their childhood emotions, unyielding and vehement. As time passes, desire grows between them, followed by forgiveness, and finally love.

I felt the ending was rushed and abrupt, leaving the resolution a bit trite.
