Liam O’Connor should have died at sea in 1912.
Maddy Carter should have died on a plane in 2010.
Sal Vikram should have died in a fire in 2026.

But all three have been given a second chance—to work for an agency that no one knows exists. Its purpose: to prevent time travel destroying history...

"My fellow Romans and Americans - this happened in 54 AD"

Ave Imperator, morituri te salutant Caligula, aka 'goat legs' or if you prefer 'little soldier's boots' - I'd suggest not calling him goat legs, apparently it never ends up well for the speaker.

"Come in, come in, meet my new senator" said Caligula

"Who is it" asked the newcomer

"My horse" responded the Emperor

He LOVED that horse.

I discovered something about three-quarters of the way through this book that I hadn't thought of up until now. It's something obvious, but something I just hadn't considered, perhaps because I hadn't needed to yet. And that's this: this time-travel series doesn't have near as much time-travel in it as it does adventure. And that may be fine for some people. It's not that all the fighting ancient Romans and defending ancient castles isn't fun. But it's just not as much fun to me as the actual tr ...more

Another great installment in the time traveling series, that once more manages to include a brilliant main plot, great factual historical (and new historical) detail, whist continuing the overall story arc of the series, as to just who is the mysterious Foster who recruited our heroes, and just what is the Agency they work for..

This time the period of history that needs to be corrected from the interference of others messing with history is the Roman rule of one of the more unstable emperors, no

We are half way into Alex Scarrow's brilliant TimeRiders series and I am finding it increasingly difficult to review these books for fear of giving away massive spoilers. I tried to write a review for TimeRiders: The Eternal War when I had read it but found it so difficult I eventually gave in, and simply writing "It's brilliant, read it immediately" was, I felt, a little too brief for a blog post. Now that I have finished this fifth book, Gates of Rome, I am still a little hesitant (it could be ...more

This was a good book but for some reason did not have me glued to the book or leave me hanging in suspense. Liam, maddy and Sal, the main characters are further developed and there is a surprising turn of events as robots sent from the future start attacking them and New York suddenly turns out to be like Ancient Rome. The three friends and their faithful (or programmed to be faithful) meat-robot, Bob helps them gain a place among the people of Rome.

[NOTE: After reading the final book in the series I concluded that I didn't like The Time Riders at all. My original review remains unchanged but I do not recommend this series. The original star rating was 4 stars.]

To tell the truth, I got a bit bored near the beginning of this, and I don't have a good reason. The story did take a little while to get going fully, but it shouldn't have been bad enough to make me put it down for half a month. But apparently it was.
After my random phase of boredom

3.5 stars. It was only a matter of time before this series tackled Ancient Rome, and it did it in a pretty great fashion. The idea of a multi-national group of people going back in time from The End of Days to try and change the course of history was fun, but then I spent a decent chunk of time cringing (as, I suspect, I was supposed to) when the Vice-President of the US took over and decided that they should announce themselves by blasting Born in the USA on the way into Rome, and that they sho ...more

I have to admit, I've loved the TimeRiders series from the very first book, and I only bought it on a whim because it mentioned the word "Titanic" in the blurb. I eagerly devoured the first three and eagerly passed them onto my Dad to read, while checking to see when the next one was out.

And then I got book 4, The Eternal War (bear with me!). Once again, it had been pre-ordered, and once again, I read it straight away, even though I had enough books to be getting on with. But it left me feeling

Being a fan of this series, I pre ordered a limited collectors edition of this 5th instalment and it was surprisingly delivered to me 2 weeks in advance of general release.

The book is yet another brilliant and relentlessly rip roaring page turner, hence I am able to write this review already...once I got my breath back!

While every book so far have been terrific time travelling adventures, there is a major underlying story arc which spans all 9 planned books. By now readers will have been investe

Score: 3.5/5 stars Been in the mood to do some reviewing recently.

Been a fan of TimeRiders series ever since I had read the first book, TimeRiders. It's an interesting concept to take people who are going to die and give them a chance to live again; to work for the TimeRiders agency.

4 books later, I was a bit apprehensive on reading this novel. The same formula was applied to the previous books. Although set in different situations and they faced different dangers, it felt too similar and famili

The sixth installment in this time travelling adventure, and things are starting to become far less fun and much more serious. This outing also breaks the mould again – rather than Liam heading back to fix things whilst the others wait and watch, they all end up jumping about time all over the place.

Now it seems as though the secret is out and things are beginning to ramp up. Not just in terms of them as an agency, but within as well – Maddy finally decided to open up to her friends, which was q

I've got to say that I was disappointed with this book. I felt that this book was more of a plateau for Alex Scarrow's brothers book series. Alex admits that he used two characters from his brother's series that takes place in Ancient Rome. I felt that this book became more of a "get to know these two characters" as if Alex was promoting his brother's series. Unfortunately, I felt it took away from the main characters of Time Riders. The beginning and end of the book was the best because it real ...more

Another time wave has Liam travelling back to Roman times to investigate the cause. Meanwhile attack on the remaining TimeRiders, sends Maddy and Sal fleeing - their only escape being to follow Liam and head through the portal. With no one left in the office (except Computer-Bob), they have no means of returning. Nor do they know what might be waiting for them if they ever do manage to get back.

Trapped in a time when Caligula is ruling years after he should have died, knowing that the time blip

I somehow skipped book four so missed a few plot points. This one seems slightly sketchy on the plot - but as I missed book four I have to give that a pass at the moment. The Roman history it build on is good - I like how he illuminates Caligula and builds on what might have happened had he continued to reign. I also liked how he brought in why he was termed Caligula and all of that. Nice touch with the "just because they are from the past doesn't mean they are dumb" aspect either. Shame you did ...more

I have been a loyal follower of Alex Scarrows TimeRiders since book 1, and have also followed his adult thrillers since the very first one, I have seen his writing grow and grow along with his ability as a story teller.

The TimeRiders series in my opinion is his master piece, his ability to see into the mind of the young adults that the book is mainly targeted at is a skill that should not be ignored. This book does not talk down to them, it does not try to be hip or have pretencions above what i

Time Riders – Gates of Rome by Alex Scarrow. Young Adult novel. Liam and Bob head back into Roman times to resolve a time contamination. While they are gone, other time agents attack the field office leaving Maddy and Sal to escape into the past. All the team are now stuck in ancient Rome unsure how to get back to their own time or why they have been attacked. This is an excellent premise and the subject of ancient Rome is a good one, however, there is a lot of wasted time. There was much repeat ...more

Now that's more like it! Gates of Rome was a definite improvement over the last 2 Timeriders books. The existing characters were developed nicely, and the new characters (Caligula, Rashim) were interesting and entertaining. However, he spent too much time on the side characters in the middle of the book in my opinion. I would've preferred to have been reading about Liam, Maddy and Sal than Cato and Macro, and while it might have advanced the plot, I felt that it bogged down the book a bit. (view ...more

Book 5 in the series.

I really took to this series for the first three books, but book four started my decline in interest in the series. I gave this one a go in hopes that it was the mood I was in when I read book four. But alas, this book did not rejuvenate my interest in the series.

It is a good book, don't get me wrong on that point. The characters continue to develop and the story line is advanced quite nicely. It even has begun to get darker which is something I like in a series like this.

Mind blown.

Again.

You can tell with this book that we're starting to come to the pointy end of the series. Where the protagonists begin to question what they're really doing, for whom and whether it is the right thing to do or not.

More humour. More action. More Liam and Bob being the hilarious people they are.

Quite a page turner! The book had me hooked within the first 10 pages.

Each time I finish reading a book in this series, I'm left in awe of the author. The detailed interweaving of subtle plots and the elegance with which he gradually unravels them throughout the course of the series is truly admirable.
