I’ve been reading a lot of dark and violent books lately. I recently joined two challenges, both of which requires me to read those kind of books. Not that I’m complaining or anything because it’s those kind of books I enjoy reading the most. I just thought I need to read something different, something light and positive, something –as my friend Tina prefers to call them–fluffy. As it turns out, Wendelin Van Draanen’s Flipped was the right book for the break from gritty novels that I needed.

The moment Juli Baker sets her eyes upon the blue-eyed Bryce Loski, she fell in love with him. Bryce, on the other hand, thinks that she’s a dangerous maniac and wants nothing but for her to leave him alone. From 2nd grade up to 7th, they had this stable relationship wherein Juli is chasing after Bryce and Bryce is trying his hardest to avoid her. Eight grade came, they found themselves in reverse situation. Juli realizes that Bryce is nothing but a tactless arrogant jerk while Bryce started to notice Juli’s iridescence.

If John Green have written an 8th grade he-said she-said coming-of-age novel, it would have been something like this. Strong-willed female lead? Check. Brilliant character development and interesting minor characters’ storyarc? Check. Spot-on potrayal of being young; hence, giving the reader a sense of nostalgia? Funny yet poignant story? Perfect and optimistic ending? Check, check and a check. The only element missing is the geeky guy which is quite prominent it Green’s novels.

Now, I’m not saying that Van Draanen is a John Green rip-off. To be compared to John Green who ranks high on my favorite authors is probably one of the best compliment I could ever give. The difference between the two of them is how they start their novels. John Green will make you laugh really loud, whereas Van Draneen will make you smile from ear to ear. A smile that is so optimistic, it can cure cancer. I guess the other difference is that Van Draanen’s novel was already adapted into a film while Green’s, for the moment, is only optioned.

Flipped is also a good companion novel to John Green’s Paper Towns. It touches the same theme Paper Towns discussed–the idea of misimagining someone. At the beginning of the novel, it’s clear that Juli loves her idea of Bryce and Bryce hates his idea of Juli. They grew up developing those ideas they have instead of actually knowing one another. It goes to show that we really have that tendency to idealize a person rather than actually knowing him or her.

And just like Q in Paper Towns, Bryce also had this revelation when he finally see Juli which leads to my favorite line from the book which is a pretty simple line but, in my opinion, says everything(not verbatim):

She looks more like her photo in that stupid article that the photo itself. If that makes any sense.

Damn, if only these books about empathy could only make me a powerful empath.(less)

But, Wendelin Van Draanen’s new romance novel, Flipped, will definitely flip you off your feet. She has her own unique way of demonstrating a few importances in life.

The way Flipped is viewed definitely differs from most books for two main reasons. First, it’s written alternately between Bryce and Juli’s perspective on themselves, each other and their families. Second, the word choices Draanen chooses are so vivid that it’ll make you feel like the actual character! For example, in the beginning, Draanen describes the first time Bryce and Juli laid eyes on each other. Bryce says, “All I ever wanted is for Juli Baker to leave me alone. For her to back off—you know, just give me some space.” While Juli says, “My heart stopped. It just stopped beating. And for the first time in my life, I had that feeling. You know, like the whole world is moving all around you, beneath you, all inside you, and you’re floating. Floating in midair. And the only thing keeping you from drifting away is the other person’s eyes. They’re connected to yours by some invisible physical force, and they hold you fast while the rest of the world swirls and twirls and falls completely away.” Draanen definitely has readers get into the characters’ head and feel exactly what they’re feeling. Even though Draanen writes the characters’ thoughts right on the page, you’ll be constantly inferring, predicting, and asking questions. This might sound very school-like but I guarantee you won’t even realize you’re doing it!

I guess it’s safe to say first impressions usually impact people the most though are often inaccurate. Not only does this intervene with Bryce and Juli, it also intervenes with me. This is because as the pages starts to build up, the experiences they both face does too. And as the experiences make their way through each of their lives, I soon remember to never judge someone without getting to know them first—especially Bryce and Juli. You’ll see how drastically they change when they become teenagers.

When the curtains finally close, the characters soon realize the true light of themselves, each other, and their families. Bryce, a deceitful coward, who’s only goal was to get away from Juli and have nothing to do with her, flips into someone completely different. While Juli, a courageous individual, is overly obsessed with her ideal Bryce and doesn’t know how he is truly like. Juli will soon see that there’s more to Bryce Loski than she might know. But after all those times he’s mistreated her, how could she ever find it in her heart to accept him? Well, that’s for me to know and for you to find out!

It’s not until you’ve finally finish the book until you realize how much you’re able to take out of it. The idea of being you—being genuine and brave—being able to live out loud, is nicely demonstrated in this novel. If you’re looking for some encouragement and inspiration for living out loud, go pick up a copy of Flipped! It might not even be close as the length of The Odyssey, but it’s definitely filled with lots of sparks!(less)

I'm giving this book a five because it is perfectly crafted plus a good story, good characters, great voice. The author's voices for the two viewpoints are perfect! I liked the protagonists and the supporting characters, especially his grandfather and her dad. The story teaches good lessons/values. It's also funny! And sometimes sad. A quick read that quickly pulls you into the lives of a boy and a girl, showing each person's point of view. The book's format was unique because it actually "flipped" from one persons perspective to the other person's perspective. The author does a great job of adding depth to the story as the book progresses and the relationship grows from a childhood crush to a young friendship. When I first watched it on Movie2k.com, It reminds me of my elementary days of having a crush. Just like Julianna Baker. I Flipped when I saw that guy whom I really liked when I was in 6th grade.(But I didn't stalked him) :) ahahaha!

I loved it! I couldn't ask for two more engaging main characters, except maybe for Nick and Norah (although they would be for much more mature readers--this is something I would feel comfortable handing to someone under 14)

Similar to Nick & Norah's Ultimate Playlist, the story is told back and forth from the boy's & girl's point of view. I loved the humor, the chicken motif, and the unexpected depth and complexity of the story.

LOVED LOVED LOVED this book. I can't think of anybody to not recommend it t. One of my favorite reads this year. It's a lot like The Wednesday Wars, it's got that same feel-good vibe going on. My only gripe was the ending! There better be a sequel, or I'm going to Flip!

WTF, there's no sequel? WTF, Wendelin Van Draanen! The ending to Flipped felt so incomplete! I AM UPSETS :(

Recommended for Middle Schoolers: Finally read this yesterday and totally enjoyed it! The story centers around a boy and a girl, neighbors, who grow up together. Told in alternating chapters, the reader flips back and forth listening to the same incidents told from each character's point of view. In the end, the story is about being authentic and true to yourself, always a good lesson for us all.

And that did it. Even, I myself just flipped. And just like Juli Baker, I fell in love with Bryce Loski all over again. Kudos to Wendelin Van Draanen and to the director of the movie, Rob Reiner for having a job well-done on the adaptation. One of the best book adaptations, I must say. :)

Lalu, bagaimana Juli harus menghadapi Bryce? Pun sebaliknya?

Awal membaca buku ini membuatku sedikit mengerutkan dahi. Konflik yang disajikan di awal cerita membuatku harus cepat memahami karakter masing-masing tokoh. Namun ketika satu bab berhasil diselesaikan, aku akhirnya menyadari bahwa buku ini disajikan dalam dua sudut pandang yang berbeda, Bryce dan Juli. Dan itulah yang membuat novel ini menjadi begitu menarik. Pembaca dibuat tak sabar dengan sudut pandang lain yang disajikan.

Selain sudut pandang yang menarik, novel ini juga memberikan pesan-pesan sederhana namun sangat berarti untuk menjalani hidup ini, khususnya bagi para remaja. Endingnya juga, emm, so sweet.. Membuatmu merasa sepakat dengan pernyataan di cover depan novel ini: "You never forget your first love". Selamat membaca! ^^(less)

Since tomorrow's a continuation of our hell week/s (and I haven't studied yet), I'll make this review short.

I want to say three things:

1. I cried when I read this. Oh, yeah I know, kinda lame. But I am not done yet: I cried over a tree (a sycamore, Platanus occidentalis, to be exact. I don't know how this tree looks like I have to google it

). This, I think, will give you an idea how much emotion you'll get when you read this. ~~Or just proves how crybaby I am.~~

2. The Author ~~(too long to type. Oh, yeah I just typed this message)~~, Wendelin Van Draanen, I guess, supports the theory that girls mature faster than boys (which I totally disagree with, but my opinions not important now).

So, when this "Julianna "Juli" Baker meets Bryce Loski at the beginning of second grade, she knows it's love, but Bryce isn't so sure, especially as her obsession with him grows and she stalks him throughout his school years. This story is told alternatively by sarcastic Bryce and spunky Juli, each with their distinct views on the story of themselves; they take you from the first moment they met to junior high, where one flip changes everything." (And this brief overview came from Wiki, word by word. Sorry but I am too tired to summarize this now and this book is an easy and quick read so duh! But if you really want to know the story, you can watch this video from Youtube.)

This book brings back the memory of middle school (oh elementary years!), when you meet and make new friends, boys are afraid of girls (I don't know if this really happens. You see, I don't know anybody back in elementary school. This has always been a family joke: when someone from school said hi, and my mom's like "Hey, is that your classmate. Say hi." And I was like "uhm yeah." And she would ask "who's he?" And I would answer "I don't know." Early signs that I am not normal. Thank goodness at 5th grade I met my first two friends.) and when school activities are so embarrassing. Really entertaining.

3. I liked how she ended it. When I was in the last pages of the book, I was almost praying: Please don't stop yet. Don't end like this. DON'T YOU DARE END THIS NOVEL WITH THIS.

But it was not an answered prayer.(less)

Imagine yourself sitting on your grandma's lap, the two of you merrily drinking hot cocoa on a chilly December afternoon, and all of a sudden, she narrates to you her love story. Even if the summary says that Flipped is a romance story, I believe that it is more than just cute romance. It is actually a coming-of-age tale about how Bryce and Juli and how each of them finally came to see who the other really is.

Flipped starts out looking like a funny light read. It flips back and forth between Bryce and Julianna and makes you laugh outloud. This is a very unique story and i really did enjoyed it a lot. Julianna Baker is crazy about Bryce Loski ever since she was seven years old. Wonderful, wonderful! Absolutely loved it! The double point of view is clever and gives this story a little extra something above the rest of its kind.

Some complaints I’ve heard about the story were repetitiveness and vague ending, though I can hardly see those complaints being valid.
