This is a novella and I didn't know that prior to reading it. So I was actually shocked with the pace everything was going and to discover that it's actually short. Okay, so whew! Let's get down to this review.

This is a novella and I didn't know that prior to reading it. So I was actually shocked with the pace everything was going and to discover that it's actually short. So yes, it is a short read but in now way did it lack in plot or action. It was jam-packed with that and the author wasted no time in telling the story she wants to tell us. I finished this in one sitting, save for that little nap I simply had to have. Hee.

I joined the blog tour purely because I want to help Clare and I've been eyeing her The Violet Fox for so long. Plus, when I read the blurb, I was definitely intrigued. Who wouldn't? Trinity suffers brain damage and then she writes this great story? How? Why? So I signed up! Thank you to Clare C. Marshall for holding this tour and for giving me the chance to read this book. This in no way affected my review and all of these are my honest thoughts. So back to Within...

Within is told in different perspectives. Yeap, not just one. This is in great service to the story because you just have to know how each character thinks and their motivations. Even without labels as to who was talking, you won't be confused because Clare masterfully changes tone as she changes POVs. I love that.

Clare warned people that Within might not be for everyone. I agree. It has some gritty, realistic and gory details some of the weak-hearted might opt out of. It describes graphic violence and thoughts so so dark and twisted, you might shudder. At first, the novel took its time to establish the characters and the setting. I can't quite predict what's gonna happen. But once Edmund started speaking, it was a whirlwind of information and happenings. Woah. I totally did not expect this story just from the blurb. Clare, you took us all by surprise!

The only gripe I have about this book are the characters. See, it could have been a 4 but seriously, I hated Ellie and Stephanie. Ellie is SUPPOSEDLY Trinity's best friend but she couldn't care less about Trinity. Ellie likes Zack, Trinity's boyfriend ever since and she just keeps on trying to get him for herself. Back off, girl! The boy's taken BY YOUR BEST FRIEND. She's possibly the worst best friend ever until she kinda redeemed herself in the end. I say kinda because I don't think she's redeemable. Gah, she frustrated the heck out of me. She's selfish, inconsiderate and she certainly lacks compassion. She's smart though and I'd give her that. And kinda kickass with her athleticism. But seriously, worst friend ever. Zack is the lovesick boy and while he wasn't irritating, I think he's a stock character. Trinity spent most of the time being mentally challenged with these bouts of obsession to writing her story so I can't comment on her much. Most of all, I hate Stephanie. What kind of a mother are you? Your seventeen year-old daughter now acts as if she's in kindergarten and all you can think of is your career? You don't even care. Wow. You're just a volunteer? You can't leave? George too. What great parents. You're the vice president of the company. You can't take a leave? The most fleshed out character would be the villain. Rocked my socks off. So yeah, I guess it kinda balances everything. Moreover, maybe it was Clare's intention to make her characters like this and if so, she succeeded.

I went into this tour not knowing much about Clare or Within, but was more than happy to help her promote! She has accomplished pretty much exactly what I would like to (well minus the writing a book part, I don't think I'd be very good at that...) I loved what she is doing with her website and business! I went into this tour not knowing much about Clare or Within, but was more than happy to help her promote! She has accomplished pretty much exactly what I would like to (well minus the writing a book part, I don't think I'd be very good at that...) I loved what she is doing with her website and business! Anywho, after reading the synopsis of Within I was definitely intrigued. The main character suffers brain damage from a terrible accident. Her mother and boyfriend are distraught. Then one day she starts writing. Not just the alphabet, but a dark and twisted tale. Yes, I definitely wanted to know what this story was all about.
Clare left a note for reviewers on her site that said Within was not a book for everyone. She also told us that it did not contain your typical love triangle and that the story builds scene by scene. I found this to be a really neat thing for an author to do. Needless to say, I was definitely not sure what to expect from Within.
This book was different. In a great way. It's momentum built slowly, which I know might not appeal to all readers. However, it worked--really well--for this story! I liked the constantly changing points of view. You got to experience the dark and gritty mind of Within's bad guy while also seeing the story from another light.
Being a Novella in length, I think Clare did a great job putting together a cohesive and complete story. I didn't get the feeling that anything was lacking as I was reading.
Readers be warned though, some of the scenes are a bit graphic in nature. When I say you get to experience things through the bad guy...yea you really do. His whole world. However, I will say that this POV is necessary to become fully immersed in this story.
Within is full of emotion and it really comes bubbling out in Clare's characters. You will feel your heart strings being pulled off and on through the entirety of the book. Each character has their part and they play it well!
I really liked so many things about Within. Originality, suspense, THE COVER! I can't believe I haven't mentioned how much I adore the cover. Some covers just really catch my eye and this one sure did! I could probably stuff so much more into this review, but honestly, you should go snag a copy for yourself instead. If you are looking for something that totally lacks the cookie cutter plot, this book will deliver. Within is definitely worth the read and I am looking forward to reading more of Clare's work in the near future.(less)

This books starts with two different stories, the first one being that of Trinity, Zack and Ellie. They are working on an English project together at Ellie’s mom’s house. Now, this entire novel is heartbreaking, I’m not going to lie, have tissues on hand because Mrs. Marshall wastes no time getting to the action, leaving you feeling beyond sorry for the characters within the first couple of pages.

But quickly she turns things around, giving you a mystery that needs to be solved. The novel is written showing us many POV’s allowing the words on the page depth, tension and action. Through the eyes of the characters we follow not only Trinity’s story, the one she begins writing, but also from the antagonists psychotic rampage to rid the world of imperfect humans.

Some of the scenes are a little hard to take. The cruel and sadistic views of the antagonist have your stomach twisting but they are also integral to the story itself, giving you a novel that really is full of page-turning goodness.

Mrs. Marshall has done an exemplary job of writing both sad and emotional scenes, but also weaving together an intricate story line that will captures any reader.

And of course, since this in YA let’s not forget the boyfriend Zach and the best friend Ellie, the two of them have their place in the novel, adding even more interest to the storyline itself, and the pair are out to solve the main mystery of the novel, proving that Trinity has a special ability and the events of her story are not just to entertain anyone that reads them, but in fact are based on true events, pointing the finger at a very unlikely suspect giving you a twist you weren’t quite expecting.

As I said above, this is a unique storyline, a breath of fresh air in a market that is filled with fantasy creatures and the like, and of course, fluffy romance. This has none of that giving the novel an edge of difference that reminds us that there is so much more out there. You can have a story with normal characters, a unique ability, and a murder mystery tied into one that is amazing.

First of all, I loved the cover! Stunning.

The novel is written in different POV's. It wasn't easy following the POV's at first, but once I read on, it got better, ready to hop to hop the next POV. In fact it I found it to be a very effective method of showing how each character was affected in what was happening in the story.

The book itself? Well I have to say, it is different from anything I have read before. It drew me in within just moments of the first word. It's a fast-paced, well written, page-turner of a book that I could not and would not put down. Yes, real life interrupted occasionally, but when there were not distractions, I was glued to this beautiful story.

WITHIN is a story about a girl called Trinity Hartell. Just a normal, pretty schoolgirl. She has the gorgeous boyfriend Zack, the sweet best friend Ellie, the hard-working parents. You would think Trinity has it all - and you wouldn't be wrong. That is until her life is turned upside-down and inside-out by an accident. Life then becomes a downhill spiral for the Hartell family. Their daughter is left with irreparable brain damage, making her act like someone much younger than her physical shell.

How will the Hartell's cope? Their only daughter has gone back to acting the way she did in her childhood. She sits and plays with dolls and colours in colouring books.

How will Zack cope with the loss of his girlfriend who no longer even knows his name?

How will Ellie cope with her best friend not recognising her any more?

Then Trinity suddenly takes up a crayon and a piece of paper. She starts to write in cursive writing like she did before the accident? She writes a story about a psychotic murderer. Could this be just the ramblings of a girl with brain damage? Or could this be something much more sinister?

This story moved me to tears. I was left mourning the loss of the Trinity that was once so full of vitality. I felt bad for the Hartell's for the loss of the daughter they once knew. But I think I felt most sorry for Zack and Ellie. Zack is such a sweet boy and loves Trinity so much. All he wants is for his girlfriend to recognise him. It broke my heart. As for Ellie, she was on a turmoil all of her own and I felt such a deep sympathy for her.

High praise indeed for Clare Marshall. This story was emotive, raw, moving, compelling and beautiful.

Thank you Clare for letting me read WITHIN. This is one book I would for sure love to have in paper back for my bookshelf at home.(less)

‘’Within’’ was definitely a very good book. I really enjoyed it and from my point of view, it was too short. But this book was also heart-breaking. I actually cried in the end.

Well, I can tell you the story was original. Clare’s writing style was beautiful and I would love to read anything she writes in the future. She did a great job with ‘’Within’’.

Now let’s talk a little bit about the story:

Now let’s talk a little bit about the story:

Ellie, Zack and Trinity were very good friends and they didn’t expected THAT. The accident was tragic for Trinity – she was left with brain damage. She can’t remember almost nothing and she is acting like a five years old child (and she is seventeen). But most important, she can’t remember Zack – her boyfriend. Oh my, this boy was so broken-hearted, I just wanted to go and hug him. Zack really loved Trinity with all his heart.

Meanwhile, Ellie falls in love with him. She isn’t a bad character, so don’t hate her because she wanted a relationship with her best friend’s boyfriend. She is just jealous, but she loves Trinity too.

Now the weirdest thing in the world happens – Trinity writes a book. How can a person with brain damage do that? I don’t know, but is was so creepy fantastic. The story is about a man – Edmund, who happens to be a mayor at day and a killer at night. The strange thing is that he is so much alike Wiley Dalton, the mayoral candidate in the upcoming election. To be more precise, Edmund is a psychotic murderer who believes in a fake God –Omnus- and he kills people for him. He says that he redeems the impure…

But there is no coincidence – Edmund is Wiley and he is the KILLER. The whole town is in real danger! When he finds out that a retardat child like Trinity knows the truth, he will try to vanish her. Will he succeed it? Maybe or maybe not. You have to read the book to find out.

The ending was sad and beautiful and amazing at the same time. I can’t believe the story is over. I am so sorry for Trinity, she was my favorite character and I loved her so much. Thank you, Mrs. Clare, for writing such a fantastic book.

Overall, if you want a very good book with an original plot, you will want to read ‘’Within’’. This book is full of action and suspense. You will beg for more, believe me.

I would like to thank the author, Clare C. Marshall, for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book for her one year anniversary tour.
I was totally blown away by this book. Completely and utterly blown away by this book. It was just. that. good. This morning I sat down on my sofa with the intent of getting to the halfway point with it today and continuing tomorrow. I looked down at the pages, and noticed I only had 10 more left. I haven't really read any thrillers before - the author described it as a "supernatural thriller". I thought it was about a girl who loses her memories and starts writing - her writing being linked to murders that have recently been occurring. Trinity's life has changed after her car accident. She had severe brain damage that she starts to act like a child and not like a seventeen-year old. She doesn't recognize most of her family and friends, even Zack, her boyfriend. When she starts to write a story, almost everyone takes it as an effect of her brain trauma but not Zack and Trinity's best friend Ellie. They know that the story is true. That their mayoral candidate is a murderer.

I had fun reading the novella. At first one would believe that its a contemporary plotted novella, but as you go deeper, there's a very surprising twist that I didn't see coming. It has a slow build-up at first which helped the story and characters to develop. I was also able to see glimpses of Canada for that matter. The fact that its just 190 pages, I was surprised its that good.

Marshall wrote Within in a way that a reader would definitely enjoy it. I liked how the story progressed from a romance to a full-blown action/mystery plot. I liked how Trinity's character made her part very well though the accident is really heart breaking and I honestly feel for Zack. He's a very faithful boyfriend and given his situation, one could seldom find a man like him. He didn't take advantage of anyone nor use the current situation for his benefit. I just didn't like Ellie that much. Her faith in her best friend, no matter what her condition is, proved that she's a good friend. Though her character is a very tough one, her persistence with whatever she's holding out for Zack didn't get my approval.

I just wish that there's a little more explanation about the cult so just not to leave a reader hanging. I wanted more of it and there were some questions I wasn't able to find answers to.

Marshall provided a good read that would keep you up for hours just to finish it. Within, all in all, is a fast-paced mystery/action novella. It is truly gruesome but in a detective kind of way and I wish there's more. I really enjoyed it!(less)

This book wasn't really what I was expecting, but I was somewhat surprised by how much I liked it in a hatred sort of way. Confusing I know, but you'll understand in a little bit.

The story is definitely original in its plot and characters. There are a number of twists in this book; it's sort of like a roller coaster. One minute I'd be in this heart-wrenching scene and the next I'd want to slap characters. (Yeah, I'm talking to you Ellie and Mrs. Hartell!)

This brings me to the characters. Marshall was able to create an interesting array of characters that kept the story going. My only wish was that they were a bit more developed. I never really felt the best friend connection between Ellie and Trinity. Even after the accident, I found myself repeatedly screaming in my head, "How are you her friend?!" Alternatively, I did feel the love Zack had for Trinity even though there was little development in their story line as well. I believe it was due to how emotional Zack was throughout the book. His feelings always seemed to jump out from the pages and grab a hold of me.

The most enticing part of this book was the mystery of the plot. I never really understood what was going on until the latter half of the book. Dalton was one crazy psycho, and I'd really wanted to know more about him and where his story really stemmed from. Marshall did a great job writing a suspenseful yet heart-breaking plot that kept me reading to the last page.

Though different from what I first expected, this creepy page turner is for anyone who's looking for an intriguing love triangle with a twist. My only wish would be for the story to continue to get more into the lives of Trinity's family and friends. I'll definitely be watching out for Marshall's future projects! I would describe this book as a psychological thriller. For some reason, I thought it was paranormal, but I was wrong.

The book starts off with Ellie in the psychologist’s office. He is trying to get her to open up about the events that had happened. The setting was fresh and well-developed, with just enough description to make Halifax, Nova Scotia vividly clear in my imagination. As a fellow Canadian, I enjoyed the pop culture references – from Tim Hortons to Metric – and I ended the book filled with a desire to visit the Maritimes.

I’d have liked to see more attention given to developing the characters, though; while the mystery was vivid and interesting, the characters felt as if they were sketched in, with a universal lack of growth that weakened my connection to the story. Trinity doesn’t have much of a point-of-view so it was difficult to care about her, and the other main characters stay within their roles as defined in the synopsis: the boyfriend who can’t let go and the best friend who wants the boyfriend for herself. That being said, I appreciated the fact that these weren’t typical YA roles or problems – it’s nice to see some originality beyond “hot guy” and “mean girl.”

Perhaps part of my struggle to like the characters can be blamed on what was, in my reading experience, the most depressing love triangle ever. I don’t think there was any way it could have not been depressing, considering that one third of triangle is suffering from a devastating brain injury, but adding in the fact that her supposed best-friend was trying to get the injured boyfriend for herself made it…sad. Darkly sad. A little twisted. Emotional, yes, but not in a way that I found particularly enjoyable.

Summary: An entertaining mystery with a twisty plot, extremely creepy villain, and some characters who broke out of the stereotypical YA roles. An interesting read with a pleasantly dark aftertaste.(less)

First thing I need to say is… CREEPY! The whole dang story is creepy. The villain is so twisted and merciless that at times I found it hard to stomach. On top of that, there are some very dark and somber undertones as you observe the family and friends of Trinity deal with the accident. I could feel the tension building as I progressed through the story. Though I may not read thrillers often, this story has made me want more of them!

This book is not light and fluffy but dark, and suspenseful. It is told in the point of view of everyone surrounding Trinity, though I think it would have been interesting to hear her voice no matter how simple it may or may not have been. I would've have liked to hear the thoughts that drove her to write her story. A very good read by a local talent. It grabbed right away and I finished the book in an afternoon while on vacation. My only wish is that it was a bit longer. But, I have to say I will never look at the Halifax Commons the same way again.
