Susan Silverman's ex doesn't call himself "Silverman" anymore--he's changed his name to "Sterling." And that's not the only thing that's phony about him. A do-gooding charity fundraiser, he's been accused of sexual harassment by no less than four different women. And not long after Spenser starts investigating, Sterling is wanted for a bigger charge: murder...

Oh, joy! It’s a Spenser story that focuses heavily on Susan. I haven’t had this much fun since the hogs ate my baby brother!

Susan’s ex-husband Brad had come to her complaining about a sexual harassment lawsuit that could bankrupt him, and Susan thinks the obvious thing to do is to have her boyfriend look into it. As Spenser repeatedly observes, “This thing showed every sign of not working out well for me.”

Despite being aware of how messy it could get, Spenser goes off to do Susan’s bidding, but...more

My second encounter with Parker's Boston PI, Spenser, was OK but it has some flaws.

Spenser's long-term girlfriend, Susan Silverman, seems to get on the nerves of many readers and she's beginning to annoy me, too, but I'm finding Hawk fairly annoying, as well. Hawk is Spenser's hitman pal and favourite convenient assistant. He's big, he's tough and if he's not intimidating someone he's bantering with Spenser. And that's the problem, for me. It's not the character, it's his dialogue and specifical...more

93 out of 100 for 2010

I am on the verge of deciding that late 90s Spenser is the 'heart of the canon,' at the risk of sounding pretentious. Barring that, I do feel that the three novel written in that period including Small Vices, Sudden Mischief, and Hush Money are about as good as Spenser gets, (and that makes them very good indeed).

In this novel, Spenser is asked to help Susan's ex husband, Brad Silver, who is the target of a sexual harassment lawsuit Brad claims is groundless. But Brad seems...more

A really great entry in the Spenser series, Sudden Mischief tells of the unexpected (or some might call it "sudden") reappearance of Susan Silverman's ex-husband, whose name escapes me at the moment. As the former Mr. Silverman (he's changed his name to Sterling) appears to be in some trouble, Susan recruits her man Spenser to investigate.

Although the overall story is nothing new (people get killed, Spenser investigates, crimes get solved), what really makes this book one of the best Spenser no...more

5-18-2013 read again. I liked my notes from 4 years ago.. Hear Hear!!!!

Another enjoyable Spenser This time with the ex of Susan... the flake: Brad Sterling, ne Baruch Silverman. Oy , what we do for assimilation. I do like the broosers showing up and getting whoooped. And Hawk, do need a Hawk fix periodically. A wonderful antidote to reality.

An excellent Spenser book with lots more interaction between Spenser
and Susan. The issue of this book is a false accusation of sexual
harassment. The first few chapter ended with Spenser saying a line that
I'm going to use a lot in my life (unfortunately): THIS THING SHOWED
EVERY SIGN OF NOT WORKING OUT WELL FOR ME. There were other observations I liked: We sat and looked into the fire and were quiet
together. I liked it. It wasn't an absence of conversation, it was
the presence of quiet. AND: I like...more

When Susan's ex-husband asks her for help, she asks Spenser. But she is totally conflicted by the idea, and as Spenser says a number of times, THIS THING SHOWED EVERY SIGN OF NOT WORKING OUT WELL FOR ME

But then the ex goes missing, a murdered man shows up in his office, various mobsters and hoods get involved, and all of a sudden Spenser must figure out what's going on, despite Susan's troubles with it.

Some great one-liners in this, and a wonderful depiction of Spenser and Susan's relationship,...more

This ranks right up there with the best Spenser novels. It deals with Susan's ex husband, who is a businessman accused of sexual harassment. He is portrayed, deservedly so, as a pathetic loser who can get women. Susan asks Spenser for help, and he obliges. Spenser and Hawk delve into the usual suspects and incidents. What makes this stand out is getting into Susan's background, which has been largely absent from any in the series. Parker provides some nice perspective on this, and makes me appre...more

Spenser's long-time girlfriend, Susan Silverman, asks Spenser to help her ex-husband, Brad Sterling. He's in trouble due to a a sexual harassment law suit filed against him by a four women who did volunteer work on a fundraiser / gala. Spenser discovers that the law suit is the least of Brad's troubles. While investigating the harassment suit, Spenser and Hawk begin to trace Brad's business dealings as a professional fund-raiser and discover his tendency to help himself to sizable amounts of the...more

There are some characters who have been around so long and are so consistent that they fit like an old pair of jeans; there are some books that are so easy and go down so smooth that they can be read in one gulp. The character, of course, is Spenser; the book, Sudden Mischief, the latest Spenser novel from the typewriter of Robert B. Parker.

These books are designed for one-stop reading. They take three hours, give or take for your reading speed, and are meant to be devoured by the fire with a bo...more

Spenser staggers bouts of couple's therapy with outbreaks of violence, reinforcing his reputation as the most sensitive thug of modern literature. I've always kind of wanted to give Susan a good smack across the face, and this installment in the series didn't lessen that urge at all... but at least there's a lot of Hawk.

Delicate. Balanced. Lyrical. A person might not use these words to describe many detective novels, but Spenser is a compelling exception. In this installment, Spenser's relationship with Susan becomes more complicated when Susan's ex needs help. This is another delightful read.

Sudden Mischief (Spenser #25) by Robert B. Parker (Berkeley 1999)(Fiction/Mystery) finds Spenser investigating Susan's ex-husband who's being sued for sexual harrassment. Not one of my favorites. 4/10, finished 8/22/11.

I sure enjoy the repartee between Spenser and Hawk. As always, there are some great lines, references to literature and some laugh-out-loud moments. This one got serious with Susan having some emotional problems.

Good; Continuing character: Spenser; Susan's ex-husband has money troubles and a harassment lawsuit, so she asks Spenser to help him out; soon bodies start to stack up. Not as good as most in the series.

Loved it! I enjoy the Spenser character and his relationship with Susan. I always picture Robert Urich as Spense as I am reading. This one involved Susan's ex, but Spenser handled it very well.
Kevin Beck
This was the first Spenser book I have read where Hawk is a major character. These are even better than the earlier books because the dialog between Spenser and Hawk is very funny.
Dina
Susan's character gains some depth. She struggles with her choices of men, while Spenser tries to let her solve her old relationship problems by getting only somewhat involved.
Janet
A 98 Spenser novel. Easy read. Forgot how much a Spenser novel requires Spenser eat and drink. In earlier ones, he would cook..now he and Susan or he and Hawk go out to dinner.
Rob
To me, one of the better, if not best Spenser novels. When Spenser's life partner (I know of no better word) Susan Silverman asks him to look into problems her ex-husband is having, Spenser discovers there is no problem; except, of course, that he's investigating the problems the ex-husband of his partner is having.

A must-read for anyone whose significant other has ever wanted you to deal with something that they, of course, don't want you to know about at all.
Marylu Sanok
This is probably the best of the series so far. All the characters were fairly well defined and the main character's back stories were identified in a way to reflect who they are now.

The domino effect from the premise to the final conclusion was neatly handled.
Stephen Osborne
A good Spenser novel, this one delves deeper into Susan's psyche and her problems with her past. Moves quickly although it doesn't have quite as much action as other entries.
Bob
The dialogs Parker creates are terrific. Not a compelling story, but just hangin with Spenser, Hawk, and Susan is enough.
Keri
My favorite of all the amazing Spenser books. If you get the chance, listen to the audiobook. It's amazing!

Hard to read after watching the series - I kept trying to picture Robert Urich in the book...

Susan's ex husband is being sued for sexual harrassment and she asked Spencer if he could help investigate. In the process,Spencer finds out more than expected about Sterling's affairs.

This was an effortless silky read. Wonderful use of slick dialog drove each short chapter along linking the whole tale to the revealing conclusion. A bubble gum read that was effortless to chew.

Delighted to have rediscovered Robert B. Parker over the summer, someone I had the great good fortune to meet several times. Love this one, w/ many North Shore references esp a trip to Farnham's here in Essex!
