The first two novels in this series featuring Jonah Geller, a Jewish PI from Toronto, were award winners. Although I haven’t read them, I can see why after finishing the present volume.
The plot is about an illegal organ transplanting operation in Boston. Jonah is retained by the father of David Fine, an outstanding surgical resident to the top transplant surgeon at Sinai Hospital in Beantown. It seems he hasn’t been heard from, and the father asks Jonah to try to locate him and find out why. Jon...more

Boston Cream is Howard Shrier's third novel featuring PI Jonah Geller, but a first read of this Arthur Ellis award winning Canadian author for me. It definitely won't be the last.
Geller is just back to work, still feeling the effects of a severe concussion, earned on his last case. If Ron Fine wasn't a family friend, he would have turned him down. Ron hasn't heard from his son in almost two weeks and it's unlike David to not be in touch with his family or miss work - he's a highly skilled surgeo...more

Jonah Geller suffered a head injury in the previous book High Chicago, and is still suffering its' effects. A family friend asks Jonah to find his missing surgeon son in Boston, and Jonah dutifully accepts the case, though he's really in no condition to do so. While in Boston, Jonah's friend and partner Jenn is kidnapped and he has to call in former hitman Dante Ryan to help find David Fine and rescue Jenn. I found the story sagged a bit in the middle, just before Ryan was called in, but perhaps...more
The PI is a tough as nails guy, lives in Toronto, has a girl partner whom he cares deeply for and is the knight in oh so slightly dented armor coming to rescue those of us who the police can't or won't help.
This book is a crime noir mystery that reminds me a lot of Mr. R Parker's man Spenser. But that's not a bad thing. Since Mr. Parker's untimely death I have missed "being" with Spenser. And now here is Jonah Geller who happens to catch a case that sends he and his partner to Boston USA. The...more

I can't lie, I was really looking forward to Boston Cream since reading the second Jonah Geller. I'm a sucker for a good mystery series, and I love that Jonah Geller's home base is Toronto and he lives in Riverdale, no less!
The third installment in the series takes Jonah to Boston, where he investigates the disappearance of a young surgeon. He's quickly thrown into the world of organized crime relating to the medical world (I won't give away too much of the plot here). Jonah is also battling a h...more

If you like a fast ride and don't mind a sleepless night, then you'll enjoy this gritty, action-packed PI thriller. Shrier's characters are solid and unique, the dialogue seamless and witty. He pays careful attention to details of location and ethnicity, and structures his plot around the intriguing and controversial subject of illegal organ transplants. An entertaining and thought-provoking read.
Third in the series, which I have quite enjoyed. The books are more violent than I usually read, but the violence is not without consequences as private investigator Jonah Geller struggles morally with his partly unwilling involvement. In this case, Jonah is asked to find a missing orthodox Jewish medical resident. The explanation also raises moral issues.
Howard Shrier's books just seem to get better and better and Boston Cream is no exception to that rule! Like most series they are better read in order and I think that's really required here to get a proper understanding of Dante Ryan a character that I must admit I really look forward to in these books. And the ending was wild and sounds like another thriller movie! I notice other reviewers remarking on the resemblance of Jonah Geller to Parker's Spenser and I agree except I think I like Jonah...more
