Pikir g "loh sejak kapan China pake Rupee?" Sebenernya seh g mulai curiga dari awal munculnya gajah putih bernama Hamlet.Ow ternyata?! se...more

I knew of the author from ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy, though I have not read them myself.
This was one of the quickest books I have ever read, I know it’s not that long, but I couldn’t help myself. The story is set in a far off country in a past time, Malaysia around 1900 I would guess, but it isn’t really significant.
The story is exciting throughout, engaging the imagination in so many ways, visualising demons, spirits, jungle, or volcano, but more t...more

This children’s fairy tale adventure is about Lalchand- the firework maker and his daughter Lila. Lila at a very young age decides she wants to become a firework maker like her father and believes she knows exactly what it takes. Despite her own firework creations, her father doesn’t quite agree it’s the right job for his daughter. Lila disagrees and embarks on a dangerous journey to prove her father wrong. Also in the story are; Hamlet, the white talking elephant and Chulak, the caretaker of th...more

Bakat - Keberanian - Nasib baik.

"Aku ingin menjadi pembuat kembang api," Lila berhasil berkata.
Razvani tertawa keras sekali.
"Kau? Tidak mungkin! Dan apa yang kauinginkan dariku?"
"Sulfur Bangsawan," jawab Lila tersedak.

Meski singkat, tetapi dengan luwes dia...more

Ayah Lila, Lachland menolak memberitahu rahasia menjadi pembuat kembang api sejati. Bukan tanpa alasan Lachland tidak mau memberitahu Lila. Karena setiap pembuat kembang api harus men...more

Hahaha...biasa, simfoni seorang pemalas.

Membaca buku anak-anak selalu membawaku untuk bernostalgia ketika masih jadi bocah ingusan berabad-abad silam *lebay*, ketika untuk kali pertama merasakan kenikmatan membaca sebuah buku. Cerita epos keseharian. Dengan bahasa sede...more

I don't think that Pullman's His Dark Material trilogy is funtastic books. I read somebody here on goodreads named Relyn wrote, it's kind a overrated (and I think I agree with her). I enjoy reading the first and the third but not the second. And the reason to finish those books is just because I've started to read it.

Then here goes another book from Pullman. Because this one is thick, I think it doesn't really matter if I bought it.

Comparing to His Dark Material, I think this one is much better...more

PRESENTATION AUTHOR CATEGORY

The Firework-Maker’s Daughter is an amusing and lighthearted tale about a girl named Lila who goes on a journey to learn how to become an official firework-maker. The problem is that Lila leaves without knowing some very important information. So her friends take up the chase to catch up with her, and warn her. Lila has to overcome many things on her journey as she confronts pirates, demons, mountains and more. The story is very basic. It is set in a far away land, an...more

Dongeng anak-anak modern, selain gak pake putri baik hati yang tidur mulu nungguin pangeran, malahan si anak cewek ini sedikit ambisius n workaholic. Tokoh-tokoh lainnya juga gak dikarakterkan hitam putih. This story by Pullman read almost like a folk tale or fairytale from another culture. The basic story is that Lila is being apprenticed by her own father to be a firework-maker. She loves it so much that she gets overeager to take the final step to become a full-fledged firework-maker, and sets out on a dangerous quest (without the necessary information from her father the master). She has the help of a good friend and his talking elephant during her journey, and there are some descriptions of s...more

I remember loving this when my teacher read it to us at primary school and was delighted to find that I still love it all these years later.

A fast paced adventure with all the fizz and colour of fireworks that highlights the importance of friendship, love and family in a way that isn’t sugar-coated or forced.

The characters are funny, the journey involves a volcano, lots of fire, some part-time pirates with silver-foil swords and a talking white elephant - what is there to dislike?

I read this as part of the Pullman omnibus Four tales.
An utterly charming children's book, it's clearly aimed at under tens but still has more than enough not to bore an adult. Set in an utterly fictional, sort of China-like place this is a fairy tale in the best sense (no fairies in it) lots of unexpected moments, lots of comedy and just the right sort of moral. It's as if this story story has always existed it just took Pullman to discover it.

Kembang api. Imajinasi. Perjalanan. Proses.

Lila sangat mencintai kembang api sampai ia bercita-cita ingin menjadi pembuat kembang api bersama ayahnya.

Namun sayang, pemikiran ayahn...more

bahasanya a la story teller tapi menyenangkan, berisi isu2 gender, animal care, friendship, mix-ras, kasih sayang antara ayah & anak...wah lengkap banget.

Finished in 17 minutes. Great!

Can be read to any age but more likely to be aimed at year 3 and above to read alone.
I did enjoy this book but I think there was little for children in it. The talking elephant will hold some enjoyment for them but other than that I feel that the content may be a little dull for young children. I would not recommend it unless used in a project for art or maybe drama.

While I thought that the His Dark Materials trilogy was highly over-rated, Philip Pullman is sometimes a genius. I read The Golden Compass about 4 years ago and was drawn in to the story and the world he evoked. But, the second book was so humdrum, I didn't bother to finish it or read the third. (This was way before the movie.)

However, I did read Clockwork because it was featured in A Common Reader Catalog and I trust them. The story was haunting and down right scary. I loved it!! With t...more

What fun! This book is probably most appealing for ages 7-12, but it's one of those books that is enjoyable for young adults and adults as well. It is illustrated, which isn't as common in older children's books, but the few illustrations are amazing and each one is worthy of framing. It didn't hurt that the main character resembled my daughter!

Liked his amber spyglass trilogy and was with the kids in the children's area - thought I might read this out loud to them but as I read it, decided a little above their comprehension. More like a fable with young people learning to trus their instincts and judgments and help each other. But not spectacular writing - a good story with a nice message.
