Sure, he's an excitable guy. Sure, he loves to complain. But Regis Philbin loves life . . . and with the wildly unpredictable one he's led so far, who wouldn't? After five decades in show business--and nearly 17,000 unforgettable hours on television--he has a lifetime's worth of stories to share.

In this entertaining memoir, the irrepressible Reege--consummate talk-show hos...more

How I Got This Way, by Regis Philbin, narrated by Regis Philbin, Produced by Harper Audio,Downloaded from audible.com.

This is a very entertaining memoir of Regis Philbin’s career in television from the 1950’s to the present. He just “moved on” not “retired” from his talk show, “Regis and Kelly.” Anyone who watched that morning show will enjoy this book narrated by Regis himself. It’s like listening to him give his monologue every morning of the events of his day. He talks about the people he kne...more

I have been a fan of Regis for a long time. When I was a little kid, my mother would watch his show, which, in New York, was called The Morning Show (at first). When there was a day off from school, or a snow day, it would be on. I remember when it became syndicated and the name changed to Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. The best part about that show, of course, was the first twenty minutes - the banter Regis and his co-host would have back and forth about what was going on in NY at the time in...more

The one and only Regis Philbin does a nice job of pointing out all the people who've shaped him in "How I got this way". I'll be honest though - I only read the chapters of the people I was interested in. This means my review is not comphrensive because I didn't actually read the whole book. Did it deter from my reading? Definitely not. This isn't a biography in the traditional sense, although sometimes Regis's experiences with each of these individuals overlap. I didn't feel like I really misse...more

I miss Regis. There I said it. As the famed talk show host states at one point in his book, "How I Got This Way," I came late to the Regis Philbin party, but in the 10 years I followed his "Live" show, I admit I loved the heck out of him.

This book chronicles a host of people, mostly big names you would instantly recognize, or at least think you have heard of, who have touched Regis and in some way helped shape him into the "out of control" success he is. Everyone from Bing Crosby to Don Rickles...more

I know, I know. I am somewhat of a loser. I know my friend Traci will just roll her eyes when she sees that I read this.
Read, maybe more like skimmed. I got sucked in Live with Regis and Kelly at the gym this year and his book peaked my curiosity. It was interesting. Every chapter is a different person who has influenced his life. I completely skipped anyone sports related. It was interesting to find out how he made it on television. Quite an interesting story in itself. I wish he would have ta...more

This is a series of short chapters, each on a different person who was instrumental or inspirational in Regis Philbin's career. They are written as if he is telling them to his audience. They have that quality.

The chapters include Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Donald Trump, Claudia Cohen, Kathie Lee Gifford, Joe Di Maggio, Jack Nicholson, etc., etc. There were three consecutive chapters on football coaches at Notre Dame. It got a little bit too much because of their placement, one after the other....more

How I Got This Way by Regis Philbin from IT Books, 2011

This was a fun read. Regis has done a terrific job of writing about 31 people who have had an influence on his television/talk show career. Whether this was a person he had to fortune of meeting face to face or that he was forced to admire from afar. Regis' influences come from all walks of life including sports, military and show business. It is obvious that Regis holds each of these individuals in high regard, often portraying himself like...more

What can I say, The Regis is The Regis, and I am one of those people who is old enough to remember The Joey Bishop Show, and for the first time seeing Regis Philbin on that late night show. I have always enjoyed Talk Shows, and Live With Regis was no exception. I loved watching him and Kathie Lee, and than later Kelly Ripa as his co-host on those morning shows.

In this book Regis relates many stories of how he struggled over the years to become a talk show host. He writes about many people who w...more

This is a fun read about the people who influenced Regis' career and life--from Jack Paar and Steve Allen, to Jerry Seinfeld and David Letterman. Of course, his beloved Notre Dame coaches are there, too. I didn't realize how long he had been trying to make it in show business before his morning show went national when he was in his 50s. His success was 30 years in the making. He is a nice man who never burned any bridges and learned from everyone he encountered. His host chat was the best 20 min...more

This is a light and breezy book, but so much more than that. Mr. Philbin has led a very interesting life, and he shares it in a style that captures his own natural warmth and generosity. I have met him several times, and curling up with this book really does feel pretty close to having an actual conversation with him. In the telling of his many appealing, humorous, and touching stories, his personality and story-telling skills simply shine. I know he has written other books, and I will definitel...more

This is a biographical account of the man so many have come to know and make a part of their mornings, a man who is perhaps as improbable as his name, Regis. There are a few moments of downright hilarity, and others of sadness, since that is what life is. But what makes Regis a household name is that he doesn't take things too seriously. And he brought that to the TV, and his audience responded to it. He has made many friends along the way. In fact, each chapter is dedicated to the people he's m...more

Well, lets start by saying that I really have loved Regis over the years and think he is a wonderful story teller. This book is a book filled with stories of people who have made Regis the way is is. The problem is that I have heard many of these stories over the years on his show or have seen the interviews he writes about (with David Letterman) for instance during their original airing. Also, Reeg is the consummate name dropper and this book is full of that. That said its nice to here from him...more

Fans of Regis Philbin will love this entertaining memoir. It is comprised of 30 chapters, each about someone who made a difference in his life. There are many witty stories and memories, all told in Regis’ inimitable style.

While I’ve only been a casual fan of Regis, I enjoyed these stories immensely. The only chapters I didn’t relate to were the ones about Notre Dame. I’m just old enough to remember most of the people but a few from the beginning of his career such as Jack Paar, Cary Grant, Stev...more

I really enjoyed reading this book. I've watched Regis's show since he came to New York and have always enjoyed my cup of coffee with him. Like visiting with a good friend every morning.
I've heard most of his stories over the years, but it was fun to read them again.
He's always come across as a very humble man and he's repeated his mothers words, over the years, "The poor house is right around the corner," and I believe he's lived his life accordingly.

I loved his additional comments at the end o...more

As a casual fan of Regis Philbin, I read his other book and have followed his career from the time hes been on Live! first with Kathie Lee Gifford then with Kelly Ripa (although I'll admit I haven't watched as much of him in recent years) along with his stint on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. So when I picked up this book, I didn't expect to learn too much new about him...

Was I wrong....this is a book where he talks of the special people that have made an impact on him over the years. Each chapt...more

I have been a big fan of Regis when my children were small, and I would rely on him to help start my day. This book is a quick and easy read and follows Regis throughout his famous career as a candid tv personality.

I liked it, he discusses many famous people who helped shape him in some form or another, i.e. Kathie Lee, Donald Trump, Bing Crosby.
This book gave much insight on and off camera about one of America's beloved tv personalities!

It was really interesting reading about Regis' life and how he got this way. His career spans decades and went through several transitions, though he always basically did the same job, whether it was radio, tv, sidekick, host. etc. Oddly enough, the thing missing from this book is the thing that has made him so popular in the past few dozen years, and that is a partner in crime, someone to bounce ideas off him and to play the straight man to his antics. The structure of the book forces him to no...more

The first book of 2012 is my Regis. I'm not embarrassed to write that I love Regis and already miss him being in my house every morning. I will still drink my tea from his mug...one says Regis and KathieLee and one says Regis and Kelly, but the show isn't the same. I liked the format of this book. I really like the closing quotes at the end of each chapter and I really liked the chapter on Joy with a close second to the one on KL and K. I could almost have written this book because I knew many o...more

I'm a fan. Regis has kept me company almost every morning for as long as his show has been syndicated. There weren't many surprises in the book because he shared so much of his life on his show, but I liked the way it was organized and it did have a few new stories. It's interesting to hear how Regis was influenced by each person named in the book and what he took away from each relationship. I'd recommend this for anyone who misses that morning banter.

I love autobiographies, bio's and memeroirs, but I am not a fan of this book. At the beginning and throughout the chapters, I remember counting down the pages to the end of the chapter.

Each chapter was about some celebrity or business partner who effected his life in some way. To me, it felt like an incredibly long acceptance speech when the audience is thinking, c'omn already, we get it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this warm, funny and entertaining memoir. Regis is delightful. And so is his writing style. If you like learning about the past - our people, places and culture - you will find all you're looking for and more in this book. If you are interested in the entertainment industry you will like it even more. It's sad that the days of people interacting one on one are slipping away. Raw talent is not easily recognized. Too many are busy being walled off in their offices, cars and on...more

Hearing Regis read his memoir on audiobook is just like listening to him tell a story on his morning show. He has so much fondness for people in his past and his nostalgia really comes through in the narration. The older you are the more you may enjoy his stories of working in the early days of television.

I'm not much of a Regis fan, but this was an enjoyable read. Chapter by chapter, Mr. Philbin recalls his encounter with a different celeb, both on and off the air. It's the kind of book one can pick up and lay down without a problem; yes, I'll say it...it's a good bathroom book.

Regis is a storyteller and after watching him for many years on his Regis & Kathie Lee, then Regis & Kelly morning TV shows, it was interesting to read how he got his start and the famous people that he calls friends as well as inspirations.
Marie

I enjoyed all of the history behind the well-earned success of Regis. His stories were sometimes humorous and always full of the way he encountered meetings with big named stars which ultimately led to his great success. I miss him.

Obviously summer is here...because this is a very light summer read. If you like Regis or picking apart broadcasting careers to find out how they began you'll enjoy this- his stories are funny and, like him, non-offensive.

Loved it! Regis is inspirational, but still humble enough to know where his roots are and be thankful to those who have inspired him to be where he is today. You can feel the gratitude, with a touch of humor mixed in. He loves his life and has worked hard to get there. Definitely a good read!
Lisa
I love Regis and miss him making me laugh every morning on Live. I wish the book were more personal and not focused mostly on the people that have passed through and influenced his life.
Carol
This "name dropping" book was interesting but not too exciting. Regis has an easy way of writing and has definitely led a fascinating life. A fine way to pass a sunny day.
Tara
I loved Regis on the Live show.. I didnt know many of the people he talked about in the book so it was a little blah for me but the people that I knew it was a decent read.
