Prefigures a lot of LOOK AT ME and THE INVISIBLE CIRCUS, enough so that I got a few characters mixed up. If the descriptions err too much on the side of writer's workshop, it's made up for by the fact that things actually happen to these people.

Jennifer Egan's stories are elegant, spare, and often sad. She is the master of the killer last line. She had me weeping on more than one occasion.

Not as skillful as her novels, but these stories contain hints of Egan's later imaginative range.

All of the short stories in this collection deal with longing in some form. They're beautiful.

I liked more than half the stories in this collection and really liked the ones I liked.
