The Dead That Walk: Flesh-Eating Stories
THE DEAD WALK AMONG US!
Of all the ghoulish monsters, zombies are the most horrific. Reanimated corpses of real people--perhaps even a former friend or relative--these undead brethren rise from the grave to devour your delicious living flesh.
Far more sophisticated than the brain-eating mobs popularized in movies, zombies are as diverse as living humans, and this collectio...more

IT’S been 17 years since Stephen Jones published his benchmark anthology, The Mammoth Book of Zombies, and while many books about the walking dead have been released since, few have matched its success.
Since then, zombies have returned to favour via the cinema (28 Days Later, Zombieland) and the bookstore (Pride And Prejudice With Zombies), and while the amount of undead fare (zombies and vampires) on offer is enough to choke even a hardcore fan, the quality of what’s on offer hasn’t necessaril...more

At one time, I wasn’t drawn to zombies. I know, I know, it’s a travesty to say, but there you go. I just never had the urge to seek out zombie-related media. And then I started watching zombie movies, which was a bit of a shock. Eventually I started reading zombie books and short stories as well, just to expand my horizons. However, I’m still a hard-sell on good zombie media, so when I was offered the chance to read The Dead That Walk I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. However, I was pleasantly surpr...more

I gave this book a 2 star rating.
This book has several fairly short stories all about zombies or the living dead. Each story tells about a person or a group of people trying to survive a zombie outbreak. In some stories people try to isolate themselves other people find safety in numbers. One guy uses his former knowledge to find food and avoid being spotted by zombies. Some people thought it was a joke in one story and ended up learning that it was not, the hard way. In one story people think t...more

Like any book of short stories it had it's ups and downs. Some stories were very good, and others were very dissapointing or down right dumb. I was very dissapointed by the Joe Hill story that technically wasn't about zombies at all, but really about actors who play zombies in a popular film by Romero. There was also a Of Mice and Men" story that was really stupid. They seemed to spread out the crap stories though out the volume, but the really good ones seemed to be in the center. So that's why...more

Well above average short story collection, all focused on stories in or honoring the zombie genre. Stories tend to be good to great, but what I liked best are that these are SHORT short stories. No novellas here. Most stories are less than 20 minutes, so its perfect for bite size reading.
Some of the stories are pretty dark and macabre so not recommended for someone that doesn't appreciate the genre.

There's a lot of familiar material here, with stories from Joe Hill, Stphen King, H. P. Lovecraft, and others which have been collected before. This makes it a fine collection for newcomers to the zombie genre who have yet to bite into some of the "classics" of the past, but there is only a small amount of fresh meat for the long-time zombie fan to chew on. The quality of the collection is very good, but much of it we have seen before.
I really, really enjoyed this book! If anything could be better than a short story book of zombies, it's a book of short stories about zombies that also includes a Stephen King work!!!! Better yet, there is a subtle reference to Delores Claiborne as well, which tickled me to death. Definitely a good read!
I picked this book up at a sale, based mostly on the Lovecraft and Joe Hill offerings. I was not disappointed. There are a few stories here that are, perhaps, a little mundane, but overall this anthology is a great, quick read for anyone with a zombie fetish.
I would specifically point out the Joe Hill story, which is a non-zombie zombie story that really hits all the right notes. In his foreword he notes that he was originally going to make this story into a novel, and it's too bad he didn't. I...more

This was the first anthology I ever read that included works based on the same thing by various authors. While this book certainly isn't for everyone, I highly suggest anthologies on a topic you like. It was a great experience to read stories on a similar theme from so many authors. It allowed me to discover many new people to read, and tales spanned from 2008 to the late 19th century, Lovecraft to King . So, do yourselves a favor, go check out an anthology today.
Some good, some not so good. Happy to discover new authors though.
