In Alyson Noël's Whisper, Riley might really have bitten off more than she’s ready for. After practically begging the Council for a more challenging Soul Catch, she is assigned an actual Roman gladiator—Theocoles, the Pillar of Doom. How is Riley, a skinny twelve-year-old, supposed to get through to him? Then she meets the beautiful Messalina, who convinces her that her on...more

This is the first book I read on my new Nook.

The Riley Bloom series is one of my favorites out there, because it's such a good escape. Riley is spunky and totally out-there, and it makes for a really fun reading experience. Whisper is the fourth in the series about Riley Bloom, a twelve-year-old girl who is constantly burdened by the not-quite-reaching of her teens. In Whisper, Riley is given a difficult Soul Catch: a Roman warrior named Theocoles. During her trip to try to cross Theocoles over,...more

Finally, some action going. I like what Alyson portrays in this book about the magic in whisper and silence... But I think the cover would've been better if it shows Riley as a grown-up in the mirror instead.

I just KNNOOWW Bodhi might like Riley in the end, so it's really hilarious when a third person bumps in. You get what you deserve Bodhi, you've got the three-books-advantage (if you get what I mean) to realise how good Riley is but you didn't notice until Riley appears to be the beautiful ad...more

Whisper is the fourth and final book in the Riley Bloom series. This book is where Riley goes to Rome to try to get the undefeated gladiator Theocoles to cross over and come to Here and Now.
The theme was good versus evil. "Theocoles was the champion gladiator back in his day. Feared by all - defeated by none." (Noel, 5) One of the themes is beauty. "Gazing into the full-length mirror she'd propped up before me , I gasped in delight at a vision of me that looked a lot like my beautiful, older si...more

A sweet, well paced book for Tweens, WHISPER is perfectly written for young readers. Noel handles fundamentally heavy subjects with humor and grace, allowing her heroine to come of age in the afterlife. Riley struggles with crushes, forgiveness, body image, and romance, all while trying to rescue the long tormented ghost of a Roman gladiator.

Though I appreciated the morality tales woven into Riley’s story, it was only the parts regarding forgiveness and lost love that resonated more than intell...more

The first Riley Bloom book, Radiance was enjoyable but, as is often the case for the first book in a series, the amount of setting-up that was needed detracted a little from the book-specific plot. With Whisper there is no such issue, which meant that it could dive straight into the book's storyline. It's a fun plot, too, with Riley heading to ancient Rome to catch the soul of a gladiator caught in an endless repetition of his own downfall and learning a lot about herself in the process.

It's Ril...more

Having read the first three books, the first two being funny and enjoyable but then i was let down by the third book so i was hoping that the fourth book would be better.AND THANK THEE LORD it was, i love the story line was just brilliant and there is like a couple of spoilers in this so look away now.

I love it!!! Anyway Riley Bloom has practically begging the Council for a more challenging Soul Catch, she is assigned an actual Roman gladiator—Theocoles, the Pillar of Doom. Then she meets the bea...more

Riley Bloom, a twelve year old girls, is on her next mission as a Soul Catcher, by going to Rome and tries to get Theocole, a Roman gladiator, to move on in life. But when she arrived at Rome, Messalina gave her a teen makeover which she wanted forever, but this made her forget who and why she is here. Being trapped in her world was better than she imagined. She even got a boyfriend and her first kiss. When her friends Bodhi and Buttercup arrived in Messalina's world, they weren't able to convin...more

As always, I love Alyson Noel's covers. This is no exception. I love the soft, pastel hues and the simplistic style.
I have been a fan of Alyson Noel's books since I read EVERMORE (The Immortals Series)
I like her style of writing and the ease with which I can sink into her stories. I think The Immortals Series was classified as for Older Teens, whereas the Riley Bloom series is YA. But either way, her stories are fast-paced, fun-packed, enjoyable reads.

As I said in my review of DREAMLAND (Riley...more

Denne her bog er den si...more

This middle grade series tells the afterlife story of Riley Bloom, a spunky, yet sometimes whiney, 12-year-old Soul Catcher who helps ghosts cross over. Riley desperately wants to turn 13 and have her angelic glow brighten so she begs the Council for a more challenging assignment and receives Theocoles, a.k.a. The Pillar of Doom, a huge Roman Gladiator. Theocoles is so deeply entrenched in reliving his days in the Colosseum that he is unable to even see or hear Riley.

No other Soul Catchers sent...more

OMGOSH -- so good -- Ground hog day for Riley!

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Riley Bloom is still in the Here and Now and on a new journey to help a soul move on. In this latest installment, Riley's inner most desire almost comes true. After she dies at age twelve, she thinks she will never, ever become a teenager and reach the magical age of thirteen. After Bodhi, leads her to her next challenge, he leaves her and tells her this will be her most challenging case yet. She travels back to ancient...more

Riley Bloom is a soul catcher, and her latest assignment is her most challenging one. How is 12 year old Riley supposed to be any match for Theocoles, who is a Roman gladiator referred to as the Pillar of Doom. Many soul catchers have went before her and not found their way out. Riley soon meets Messalina, who says that she is going to help Riley find a way to get Theocoles. But is Messalina really helping? She does make Riley's innermost wishes come true. Riley gets to experience what it would...more

THE FAERYS VIEW

I’ve been following Riley Bloom and her journeys since the start of the series. Poor Riley has missed out on so many ‘Firsts’ since dying right before becoming a teen; there’s one thing she wants and that is to turn 13. Her mentor, Bodhi tells her that it isn’t impossible for her to turn 13 in the Never that she has to change her way of thinking.
One thing I like about the Riley Bloom series is that it’s always upbeat with a somewhat happily ever after but it’s sad, too. Riley does...more

The Riley Bloom series is one of my favourite series because its a fun, quick and fascinating read. Whisper is the fourth and final book in the series and although I am sad that it is finished I am happy with the ending we got.

In Whisper Riley is sent to Rome on an assignment to cross over the Soul of Theocoles a Roman warrior who is stuck in a time loop created by a spirit girl who doesn't want to let go.

Whisper deals with the notion of growing up and falling in love. Riley tries really hard to...more

I liked this novel, especially as Riley actually learns from her mistakes this time. Riley tends to have a chip on her shoulder and an extremely low self-esteem, but refuses to listen to anyone around her when they try to help. This time, she learns to trust others and actually listen to them, and I liked that she grew up a little—her bratty attitude is toned down a lot in the novel, which was a major plus, making me enjoy her character a whole lot more than in previous novels.

I really enjoyed t...more

This is another series that I have been following since the beginning. I really each new adventure that Riley goes on. This times she flashes way back to the time of the coliseum.

What I loved most about this book is Riley's own self-discovery. For the past few books. Riley has dealt with issues within herself. I really enjoyed that Riley got honest with herself and came into who she is meant to be.

I like her new adventure into the past. Ms. Noel captured the coliseum times well. I enjoyed the d...more
SJH (A Dream of Books)
Riley Bloom is growing up in this fourth book in the popular series by Alyson Noel. She faces yet another challenge as a soul catcher when she is sent to the Colosseum in Ancient Rome to convince Theocoles, a dead gladiator, to move on.

Riley is such a great character. She's bright and intelligent, funny and endearing. Although she may not always make the right choices and decisions, which is realistic considering she is only twelve, she has a habit of learning valuable lessons along the way whic...more

Erster Satz

I am going to start by saying I was silly by just reading the fourth book without having read the previous three. I got this book from Pan Macmillan for review purposes.
However, having said that, I really wish I had read the first three, because this one was absolutely amazing and I wish I had started from the beginning first. Alas, I didn't, but I will definitely be going back to read the other three as soon as I can!

Overall I was really disappointed with how boring I found the last book in this series. I loved Radiance and the second and third books were good; I think the concept of soul catching and the way afterlife depicted in this series was really fascinating and intriguing. I found the plot in this book way too simple and boring. I understand that this series is aimed at younger readers than most of Alyson Noel’s other books, but I still think that she could have made this book more interesting. By ad...more
the golden witch.
3.5/5 stars.

Even though this apparently isn't the end of Riley's adventures, it really kind of felt like it. "Whisper" is one of the more Riley-intensive books out of her series so far - we don't see much of Bodhi (thankfully, he kind of annoys me in a '60s hipster kind of way), and we see Riley developing as a main character in a very satisfying character arc within this installment of the series. However, I feel like Noel really could have knocked it out of the park with this one and ended the...more

I've been waiting for this book and it wasn't a disappointment. I know this is aimed at younger readers than myself, probably ages 10-12. However I have read the Immortal series by Alyson Noel and it links in with that. I really like how it all fits in. In this Riley is still desperate to be thirteen (as you will know if you've read the first three books in the series), she sets off on her biggest mission of all, and again attempts to succeed where others have failed. She has the task of helping...more

I honestly think Ever could've learned a lot from Riley.

Whisper the 4th book in the Riley Bloom series we see Riley in Rome for her next more challenging Soul Catch which Theocoles a gladiator also known as the Pillar of Doom. During her adventure Riley meets a woman her grants her dream of being a teenager like she has always wanted. Will Riley complete her quest or will she abandon everything including her loved ones to be her older self?

Riley I definitely love way more than Ever. She seems wa...more

I've been following the after adventures of Riley Bloom since they first came out. Dying just before becoming a teen she feels she missed so much. First date, first kiss, etc. In this book her job is to cross over a gladiator. A man who lives his death over and over in the arena. Messalina is the girl that loves him, that he won't see, that has stayed, not wanting to cross over without him. While in Roman time, Messalina manufactures her world so that Riley will understand the life that Theocles...more
