Don't be ridiculous. Of course I enjoyed this book. It's set in the world of Kate Daniels, my favorite urban fantasy series ever.

Magic has returned to the world, coming and going in 'waves:' when magic is up, technology fails, and vice-versa (except telephones--they're unpredictible at any time). Magic hates concrete and tall buildings, and it's been a struggle for citizens to reclaim their city from pre-Shift buildings--now rubble--and magic-powered areas of wildness. Reclamation companies specialize in materials recovery from collapsed buildings, and a shapeshifter group run by Rapheal is successful at winning a contract from the city. They discover a hidden vault in a building and promptly assign four shapeshifters to guard it. In the morning, the shapeshifters guarding the vault are discovered dead, and Pack security chief assigns Andrea to investigate, putting her into direct contact with Rapheal after months of estrangement.

Absolute uppers: fun, fun, fun. There's nasty bugs in Andrea's building's basement. Atlanta's police trying to put the moves on Andrea for a few deaths here and there. There's post-break-up transformation, a hot dress and Egyptian almost-gods. Roman, the Russian volhv (druid) is hanging out and doing his lecherous dark-and-evil routine. Then there's snakes--why'd it have to be snakes? Lots of humor sprinkled throughout, particularly from Roman, and Ascanio, the teenage bouda.

Sort-of-downers: Andrea's full personality is definitely bouda, which makes sense--her father was a hyena transformed by the Lyc-V virus and her mother a hyena shape-shifter. But now I'm wondering how much of Kate is bouda too. No, she isn't, I know. But I started to feel like there was personality semblance towards the end. I don't much care; Kate's an awesome character. I'm just saying I'm not sure if Andrea's distinctive voice was ever achieved. A couple of scenes remind me of Kate books; Andrea's trip into the Glass Menagerie mirrored Kate's first trip into the Honeycomb, and one of Andrea's phone conversations with Raphael--complete with eavesdroppers--paralleled Kate's phone conversation with Curran.

Neutral reaction: it is a reconciliation love story. Not heavy on the romance, but a certain failed relationship is weighing heavily on Andrea's mind, lingering and intruding the way it does after a turbulent break-up. I'm not one for romance, but there was enough actual investigating and non-romance-based action to keep me interested, and of course, bouda love is different.

Bottom line--if you love the series, don't avoid it just because it's about a secondary character. It contains all the great world-building that makes the series special, with plenty of fights, odd monsters and a magical investigation to move it along. Glad I bought it and I'll undoubtedly re-read.

Regardless of whether Ilona Andrews writes a Kate Daniels or an Edge book, know that each time you will be getting a quality, action-packed novel. There's just something about their writing style that captures you - hook, line and sinker. The Ilona Andrews name on a book is like a guaranteed seal of fantastic entertainment. A must-read for sure!

I've never liked Andrea and Raphael, not like I do Kate and Curran or Jim and Dali. I was hoping their book would change that, but I think I like them even less now.

I had a lot of trouble connecting to the characters and story. Andrea was cold and hard to relate to. Raphael was okay, didn't really have the most noteworthy of personalities. Basically, I like Raphael and Andrea as a couple, but not so much as individuals.

The action part bored me to tears and I really didn't care for it....more

For me the real problem was Andrea and Raphael. The novel takes place in the wake of a bitter break-up. Both Raphael and Andrea want to get back together. But, after a brief bout of maturity right at the beginning of the book, both Andrea and Raphael spend most of the novel teasing one another spitefully and hurting one another. It's totally in character for both of them, and realizing this made me like Andrea less. She'd always seemed so strong and capable to me but her POV was brittle, high strung, and a little insecure.

Raphael on the other hand...I don't remember him that well from the Kate Daniels books, but he was a spoiled playboy right? Crazy and charming but unreliable? Because in GUNMETAL MAGIC he's transformed into this hardworking CEO who owns his own company and makes a lot of money, works long hours and never shows up to a meeting late. And I never felt like I understood him because on the one hand, he's apparently an upstanding, responsible businessman, but on the other hand, he mostly pulls spoiled playboy stunts like introducing Andrea to his airhead fiancée or scratching the word "MINE" into her furniture.

But really, this is one of those "not for me" things. I'm just not a fan of people who break up and get back together dramatically. It's one of my least favorite things to witness in life, so not surprisingly, I don't enjoy the trope in fiction, either.

As one last quibble...I think I'd hoped for something a little more different. I expect Kate Daniels books to feature villains culled from mythology, because that's Kate's battle. That's her world and her stand. I thought Andrea might face a different type of challenge, something more suited to her. And I thought that some of the subplots - the early, investigation-centric parts of the novel and her stress about joining the bouda pack - really fit the bill; I felt like I was seeing this world I'd come to know in a new light, from a new perspective.

Ugh. This has turned into one of those reviews where I complain a lot even though I really did like the book. And I did, but in a comfort-read way rather than an edge-of-my-seat, blown-away way. I really loved seeing Kate and Curran through Andrea's eyes; I loved getting a full, vivid description of what Kate looks like, I loved seeing Julie from Andrea's point of view, and Ascanio. Having read MAGIC GIFTS before starting GUNMETAL MAGIC, I loved they way they intersected. That was very fun. I loved the humor and the one-liners.

Certainly I recommend this to fans of the Kate series. There's no Kate novel this year, so we need our fix.

Let me open this review with an apology to many of my friends here. I know many of you love this book...and I think that's great. I'm just not Ilona Andrews' target audience.

Only got around 50 pages through this and tossed it into the "return to the library" bag. Around page 30 we start to bemoan how Raphael broke our heart and it was still going on on page 50. we were in a meeting with said Raphael, we were sniping at each other and "my heart" (this referring to the protagonist) was broken into...more

After finding out she was a shapeshifter, the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid kicked her out with prejudice, leaving her without the stability of the only real family and loyalty she has ever known. Even worse is the fact that she lost the loyalty of her mate, Raphael when she chose the Order over his Pack. The only thing holding her together is her work with her best friend, Kate in their investigative firm. But when she's assigned to investigate a multiple homicide of shifters employed by Raphael, and forced to work with him, all the fine threads holding her old self together finally snap, leaving a very enraged and unpredictable bouda in their place.

Andrea is such a damaged character, and in Gunmetal Magic we see her almost at her breaking point. Considering what she has endured, and how incredibly strong she is, it really shows just how hard things have become for her to come so close to breaking. To escape her past, she threw her entire loyalty into the Order, never once faltering even when it cost her the love of her life, Raphael. So, when they threw all of it back in her face and rejected her despite her many years of service, messed up can only begin to describe the state she was in. Yet, despite the horribleness of the situation, in all honestly I really think the Order dropping her was the best thing that ever happened to her. It forced her to finally face the other side of her nature. For years she has been living a half life as she suppressed her bouda side, but now that it has been exposed, she can't hide anymore. I only admired her even more as she started to pick up the broken pieces of her life to start the healing and made the hard decision of who she really wants to be.

In the previous books, I had rather mixed feelings about Raphael, at least when it came to him deserving Andrea. He was just painted as such a player as well as a very spoiled man. Andrea deserved much better than that so I was against them together at first. Then when he started to show his true devotion, I slowly melted and accepted Raphael. However, all that acceptance went out the window when he abandoned Andrea for choosing the Order over the Pack. Considering the Order was her "family" at the time, he had no right to behave the way he did. So, considering the fact that I already had a major bone with him, the stunt he pulled with another woman at the beginning of Gunmetal Magic had me seething right along with Andrea. Like her I just wanted to rail at Raphael for the hurt he had caused, and I honestly felt he was irredeemable. However, once I realized that he was hurting every bit as much as she was, I started to slowly open up to him again. I really enjoyed watching the two of them as they battled against each other, especially as it led to many hilarious moments. (Mating shifters are seriously crazy. Enough said.)

I have always loved Andrea's character in the Kate Daniels books, so I was really excited to find out she would be getting her own installment. She just had entirely too much going on for her personal messes to be justly resolved without completely overshadowing whatever crisis Kate was currently in. Even so, there still was a small worry that Andrea's installment wouldn't quite live up to the others. I shouldn't have worried as I absolutely loved it. Every bit as good as its predecessors, Gunmetal Magic adds a new dimension to the already fantastic Kate Daniels world. Once again Ilona and Gordon proved just how fantastic they are as writers, seamlessly blending action, romance, and humor into a story that cannot be put down once it is started. Business at Cutting Edge is slow until Andrea is asked to investigate the murders of 4 members of the pack that were guarding one of Raphael's reclamation sites. Even though And...more 4.5 stars - spoilers

Andrea Nash, a former Knight of the Order is finally getting her life back in order. She's adjusting to life outside the Order, she's working as a PI at her new business - Cutting Edge with best friend Kate, she's beginning to accept her bouda side and she's trying to forget her ex-boyfriend, Raphael.
Business at Cutting Edge is slow until Andrea is asked to investigate the murders of 4 members of the pack that were guarding one of Raphael's reclamation sites. Even though Andrea's relationship with Raphael is strained, she decides to take on the case. Andrea and Raphael try to put their differences aside in order to avenge the pack murders and find the killers.

-When I first started the series I found Kate Daniels world and magic kind of boring and confusing but after a couple of books I got used to it and I now love Kate's world. I like the way that the tech and magic alternate throught the couse of the book because it always tends to make things more complicated for characters that are usually all powerful and ultra capable.

-I loved Andrea more than I thought I would, she was almost as great a heroine as Kate. I didn't really understand her decisions in previous books but after reading her story, I completely understood who Andrea was and why she acted the way she did. Her life was even more tragic than Kate's, after what she went through it wasn't suprising that she had no desire to join the pack and accept her bouda side. Even though Andrea was hurt about Raphael and also no longer being a knight she didn't constantly whine, she just got on with things, focused on her work and fought for the pack.
I did find it a bit stupid at the beginning when Andrea was walking around investigating the pack murders in her beastkin form. Obviously if she wants answers to questions then she needs to be approachable and have people trust her - so how would walking around in a monstrous form make people want to talk to her? She knows most people hate shapeshifters so she should have realised that people would be less than willing to talk to her in her beastkin form.

- I hated Raphael with a passion - he was too spoilt, too petulant and had no concept of fear, pain or loss. Andrea deserved someone far better. She forgave him too quickly and easily. Raphael didn't even try to understand what Andrea was going through, he didn't care - he was just bothered about his own ego and how he was feeling. Thw way he flaunted Rebecca and rubbed up against her in front of Andrea as punishment was childish and cruel. Andrea should have given him a taste of his own medicine and got some action elsewhere. I don't think they suited each other - Andrea had an awful childhood and was still scarred, Raphael was coddled and given everything - he really had no idea of what years of torture and fear could do to a person. Even though Raphael was more tolerable towards the end, it was a case of too little, too late - he didn't redeem himself in my eyes.

-I hated the fight for your man undertone in the first half of the book. Why should Andrea fight for a sulky, spoilt brat after he humiliated and hurt her on purpose. Andrea's life, work and family was the Order, she was suffering enough and instead of supporting her, Raphael only thought of himself. Why she'd want to be with that self centred douche after the way he treated her, I don't know. He did say some pretty words at the end but it wasn't enough.

-I think I'm the only one that doesn't like Ascancio - like Raphael he just gets away with his bratty, spoilt behaviour because he's a guy and his roguish behaviour's supposed to be lovable and charming. If Julie acted like him she would be hated and not loved - I can't imagine anyone finding Julie likable if she slept around, had threesomes with strangers in public, was disrespectful to everyone and then was coddled on top of that. Yet Ascancio gets away with his vile behaviour because 'boys will be boys' and apparently they know no better yet girls should know better and they should be chaste, well behaved and selfless..ugh. I hope Julie doesn't end up in a relationship with Ascancio. Alsh how is it that a 15yr old boy seems to have more sexual experience than 28yr old Andrea??

-I loved the scenes with Kate and Curran - they didn't take over the story or outshine Andrea but they were still brilliant. It was interesting seeing Andrea's perspective on Kate and Curran.

-The side characters - Roman, Barabas, Aunt B, Jim and Doolittle were great. I was disappointed that Dali didn't make an appearance, I was hoping for a cute Dali/Jim scene. I would love to see Roman and Barabas getting their own novellas.

-I was pissed that Michelle wasn't killed at the end. I get that Andrea didn't kill her because her kids were there. But I would have liked for Andrea to promise to find Michelle and kill her without her kids witnessing it. I was suprised Raphael didn't tell Andrea that he would eventually kill Michelle himself - seriously the woman tortured Andrea and he just let her go, he should have gone after her and killed her whilst her kids weren't around. Both Rapheal and Andrea have killed people for less, so what if Michelle was a mother, everyone's something to someone - I can't believe they let her go.

I was disappointed when I first heard that Andrea would get her own novel because that would mean waiting longer for Kate's books but i'm happy to wait now, Andrea's book was worth it. I'll also probably appreciate Kate and Curran more when their book comes out because I won't have read about them in a while. I read somewhere that Dali and Jim would eventually get their own novel and I'm crossing my fingers that other characters in Kate's world will also get their own story especially Julie when she's older and also Derek, Barabas and Roman.(less)

I had conspired to break the law with my ex-boyfriend, who I professed to hate, broken said law, destroyed the victim's attack dog/magic creature in a fit of murderous frenzy, and then ran away across the city, wandered around some woods, and fell asleep in a tree in my beastkin shape. When I went off the rails, I didn't do it halfway. No, I flipped a few times, caught a lot of air, and then exploded in a fiery crash.

I love all the characters. I love Andrea. I love Rafael. I love all the supporting characters. Love. All. Really. BUT, I can't help but compare Andrea to Kate. I just love Kate SOOO much. She has the makings of a badass bitch, but she fails to pull it off, because she allows her past experiences to define her actions now. Too bad. She just falls short for me.

Rafael. Hmm. I've always been enamored of him, but he pissed me the fuck off in the beginning of this book. No, mofo, that behavior is unacceptable and while Andrea stood her ground at first, I thought she too willingly forgave him for the whole (view spoiler). I didn't like that a little sex smoothed everything over in that sitamation. Fuck that. Women of strong character don't let men off that easily. Despite that snafu, I thought the interactions between them were pretty funny. I know there is real love between them and they had to get it together at some point, so I let it go.

The plot... bored me to tears. I didn't care about whatever the fuck all of that was. I read it, but I skimmed a lot. I didn't care for the infodumps, either. I would have been happy with less of that and more of Andrea and Rafael. Or more of the Pack.

Overall, it wasn't bad, but neither was it awesome. It was acceptable.

More importantly, I can't WAIT for the next Kate book.

P.S. - I'd love to read a short story featuring Roman. I could totally get down with that.

I should start by saying that I have really enjoyed most of the stories written by Andrews and her husband. I have always liked Andrea as a character and wanted to read her story. This didn't quite live up to my expectations though and I've vacillated between ratings.

I'm so sad that my most anticipated book this year didn't do it for me. How frustrating is that? A book set in my favorite fantasy world without the main attraction. I feel like a Griswold staring pitifully at the locked gates to WallyWorld.

I liked it. I just didn't like it as much as i liked the other stories of the Kate Daniels series.
I like Andrea. I won't say that i like her more than Kate. Because they're different characters, and to which one their strenghts, and then, there are some storylines which i prefer above others. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them. That is my main problem with this story, i just wasn't all that interested in it.

That, ladies and gents, is how you write a spin-off.

This book achieved the difficult balance required of spin-offs; there was just enough of the principal characters from the parent series to make me smile from the mini-reunion, but their presence in no way overpowered the main characters for this book (Andrea and Raphael).

But, then again, I expected nothing less. While I suspect I've been reading too much of Ilona Andrews and too little of it that actually features Kate as a protagonist lately, I was still more than a little pleased to be back in this world. One of the biggest surprises of Ilona Andrews is the fact that despite the formulaic quality of their books, even with a protagonist who isn't Kate, they always manage to pull it off in a way that leaves the reader feeling as if they read a completely new story every time. With such complex and detailed characters, though, it isn't too hard to see why.

If you don't already know, Gunmetal Magic is the story of Andrea Nash, Kate Daniel's best friend, beastkin, and ex-Knight of the Order. Oh, let's not forget ex-girlfriend of one rather sexy bouda named Raphael. Gunmetal Magic picks up with Andrea and Raphael only recently broken up and with Andrea still nursing her wounds from being kicked out of the Order. Now, she not only has to decide whether or not to join the Pack, but she also has to help solve a crime...with Raphael. Who, it turns out, is engaged. If you thought the tension in Kate's life was bad, then welcome to Andrea's world.

As it turns out, Kate and Andrea, while seemingly similar on the surface, are really completely different people. It would be impossible to get their voices mixed up because of how unique they are from one another and while we saw a glimpse of this with the short e-novella Magic Mourns, we feel that all the more clearly with a full-fledged Andrea novel. What I loved the most, in terms of comparisons between Kate and Andrea, is the fact that both of them regard the other as having it better than they do. When we were in Kate's head, we were constantly privvy to her slight jealousy at the fact that Andrea had found someone who could love her for her, and now in Andrea's head, we feel a return of that slight jealousy as she looks at Kate and Curran, still utterly lovesick with one another. It's such a clever and subtle dynamic, but I love that Ilona Andrews makes it known as it makes their friendship seem that much more authentic.

Nevertheless, Gunmetal Magic is Andrea's story and although Kate and Andrea are best friends, Kate is only a small part of it. With Magic Mourns, we were briefly recounted the brutal past that Andrea faced, making her the tough woman she is today, but with Gunmetal Magic, we go even deeper to see the psychological ramifications that past has had on Andrea. Even more so, we can see how difficult it is for others to understand her actions, even Raphael. I love that this novel, despite its usual infusion of myth, lore, and kick-ass battle scenes, was in equal parts filled with growth, on both Andrea and Raphael's sides, as they came to understand each other on deeper emotional levels. Andrea, too, is much more complex character than we originally give her credit for and seeing the multiple layers to her made me appreciate her much more as a character.

Gunmetal Magic continues to shine in the romance department and while I'll never be a Raphael fan-girl - I suspect it's hard to once you're so firmly besotted with Curran - I still ate up the sexual tension between him and Andrea and was thrilled by the slow, tortuous, yet meaningful path their eventual reconciliation took. It still remains to be, though, that Gunmetal Magic is the beginning of a spin-off series and this, sadly, was painfully evident. Not only was this book shorter than the Kate Daniels novels, but it also felt slightly more disjointed in terms of plot structure. Although I still thoroughly enjoyed it, I suspect it would lag as a series without the Kate Daniels books to support it. Nevertheless, I eagerly look forward to more from Ilona Andrews, especially this spin-off series since I can't wait to be back in Andrea's head. Only after I've been back in Kate's head first though. I suspect I'm missing Curran too much. ;)

If I could I would give this 3.5 stars...I'm rounding up. This is definitely a must read for fans of the Kate Daniels series, I don't think this would read well as a stand-alone for people who are not familiar with this series.

I really liked this spin-off book set in the Kate Daniels world. It had the usual awesome fast paced writing, sarcastic humor and top notch world building complete with a fantastic take on Egyptian mythology. The first few chapters and actually first half were awesome and I felt like this was going to be yet another must-read-all-night installment as was the case for me with each Kate Daniels book to date. Sadly this book lost steam by mid point and personally Andrea's narrative didn't have the explosive punch that I was anticipating; And I frankly lost interest in her and Raphael’s so called “mating frenzy” after the first few chapters. I felt like their story was already told (and better) in the novella MAGIC MOURNS, so I wish there was less of the same hang ups, mating antics, and (at times nasty) banter. I also felt that there was one too many battling monster of the hour scenes with Andrea; Instead I would have preferred to see her battling and confronting her inner monsters. I also wanted to learn more about Aunt B and the inner workings of Clan Bouda; I was predicting an emotionally charged confrontation with Aunt B and I was a bit let down with what we got on that front as well.

Apart from those issues I did really enjoy the main storyline, in particular the Egyptian gods. And there were many great moments, for instance seeing Kate and Curran through Andrea’s eyes and her different take on the way post shift Atlanta looks. Actually I feel like I have even a firmer grasp on this world after this book. There were so many hilarious scenes and confrontations. The scenes with Roman were delightful as were her scenes with Ascanio and I really liked getting to know Barabas a bit more! We also got some great information about The First shapeshifters. I suspect this will be important in the overall story arc for the next couple Kate novels.

For me I enjoyed the short story MAGIC DREAMS (Dali & Jim) novella better than MAGIC MOURNS and perhaps the reason why I didn't connect better with Andrea in GUNMETAL MAGIC? Seeing as the next spin-off novel will be a continuation of Dali & Jim's story has me really excited. I adore Dali and I'm hoping her full length novel will be as adorably quirky and unique as her! As always I'm enthusiastically looking forward to the next Kate Daniels novel, due out next year narrated once again by the one and only Kate Daniels herself :)

I have to admit, I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy Andrea's POV; I thought I would miss Kate more, but it turns out that Andrea's just as much of a badass as Kate, just with different weapons selection.

Ilona and Andrew did it again this book was AMAZING!
Ilona could probably write a paragraph and make it the most interesting paragraph ever. Now I'll just have to wait for their next Kate's Daniel book, and one thing I know for sure is that there not going to disappoint.

I enjoy Andrea and Rafael's relationship, particularly when they're working together as fighters. They're in perfect tune. My one beef about this aspect is that Andrea reads exactly like Kate. At one point, when I had had to put the book down to do something else for a while, I got confused and thought I'd opened up a Kate Daniels book.

After all, Andrea is a great character.” Okay, that didn’t come across quite as I hoped… What I mean is that I didn’t particularly feel strongly either way…but now I am SO glad Gunmetal Magic was written because the book was amazing and I do believe that Andrea has the potential to rival Kate on the kick ass meter.

Andrea has always been a rock for Kate and a bit of a mystery for us. Loyal and strong, she is the perfect best friend for Kate. But little did we know that Andrea hides an extremely painful past. She was mistreated by those who were supposed to be her equals which led her to hide her true nature. For years she lived her life as a human, hiding her shifter side. A few books back in the Kate Daniels series, we discovered Andrea’s secret. In that book, her life as she knew it started falling apart. She was lost for a little while and it was disheartening to see. She’s usually the one who has it all together and here she is with no sense of purpose or real belonging! She was let go from the Order because shifters aren’t allowed to be Knights and started to work for/with Kate at her new investigation firm. Andrea is amazing at what she does but still we feel she is missing something. Gunmetal Magic is where she finds that piece of herself and it’s the story of how she comes to terms with whom and what she is.

I liked Andrea before this book and now that I’ve read all about her and witnessed her journey and observed her self-discovery, I love her. Ilona wrote an amazing character in her. She never sat around and moped…much. And even when she did, it wasn’t all about how terrible her life was and how much it sucked, it was more along the line of ‘okay, this is not the best of situations but I can make it better and let’s figure out how to do so’.

In previous books, Andrea and Raphael were starting a relationship but that didn’t work out. But neither is completely ready to let go of the other and they both want the other to know they are not forgotten. So you know what that means, right? Yes ladies and gentlemen, that means we get to see some shifter mating rituals at work. These make me laugh! The stuff these guys do to show their perspective mates how smart and cunning they are (read sneaky and conniving) is awesome. I’ll give you one little hint: purple shag carpeting. Just you wait.

Raphael was wonderful to read in this book. In the past, he’s not often taken seriously because he is a male bouda shifter and they tend to be spoiled and pampered. He is also the Alpha’s son. But you really see great depth to him this time around. I love him with Andrea and I find they are a great match.

Another character I really enjoyed was Asciano. He’s a teenager who works as an ‘intern’ at Cutting Edge. His enthusiasm is great and his attitude is hilarious. Andrea and Kate handle him very well and he responds well to them. He adds an interesting humorous element to the book – the teenage boy sort – and it works really well. And Kate and Andrea really are good role models for this boy. I am anxious to see his character grow in future books.

Roman, the volhv we met in a previous book, has quite a large role in this book and I loved him in it. His character is actually quite awesome. He can pull anything off! He’s witty and smart, amazing with his magic, can be scary yet can pull off sexy too! I would love to read more with him in the future.

Kate, Curran, Jim, Doolittle and others do make an appearance in this book but not a whole lot. This is clearly Andrea’s book. Kate is in it a little more than the others and she has some great lines. Every time I read her, I love her more. And Kate being in this book just reminds us how awesome Kate and Andrea are together. They complement each other perfectly!

We always discover new sort of mythology or folklore in the Kate books and this time around we learn a bit about Egyptian lore. I am always amazed at how much Ilona seems to know about everything! I’m assuming she does quite a bit of research but what if she doesn’t? What if she and Gordon are just naturally brilliant!? *Focus Julie, focus.* I love how Ilona takes tales from long ago and makes them fit into her stories. And I love how it’s not typically the myths and lore we see often – they use unique and very interesting versions. It’s always a treat to open up a Kate book because you never quite know what you’ll end up reading about. That is a totally cool aspect to this series.

Overall I was extremely pleased with Gunmetal Magic. After reading it, it was obvious that Andrea’s story needed to be told…and boy was it told well. Ilona Andrews writes UF perfectly. With extraordinary and unforgettable characters, lush worlds, fascinating storylines and the perfect blend of humor and emotion, they have mastered the genre. Gunmetal Magic just continues to prove this to us. It is simply stellar.(less)

This book was classic Andrews. Lots of magic, action, godly interference, and of course snark! While I didn't love this quite as much as a Kate book, I still enjoyed the visit to magical Atlanta and learning Andrea's side of the story.

When the pack asks for her help investigating the murders of Raphael's reclamation workers, they are both forced to face their feelings and work tog...more This book was classic Andrews. While I didn't love this quite as much as a Kate book, I still enjoyed the visit to magical Atlanta and learning Andrea's side of the story.

Andrea Nash is trying to put her life back together and part of that involves facing up to her ex-boyfriend Raphael. When the pack asks for her help investigating the murders of Raphael's reclamation workers, they are both forced to face their feelings and work together to solve the mystery. It wouldn't be an Andrews novel without a mythological background and this time we are introduced to Egyptology and the god Anapa/Anubis.

The mystery was interesting but it was really Andrea's voice that carried this novel. She is a very damaged character and it was touching to watch as she rebuilt herself. She came to accept things that she had previously hated or rejected. I think she became a much stronger character and began to believe in herself as someone of value. I hope we get to see this new side to her in the future Kate Daniels' novel.

I loved the appearances made by Kate, Curran, and Doolittle. It was a lot of fun to see Andrea take on Ascanio as a side kick, much the way Kate helped nurture Derek. It seemed Ascanio really respected Andrea and hopefully took a few lessons from her. I also enjoyed seeing Julie from Andrea's perspective.

The only part that I didn't love was Raphael and the tension between him and Andrea. They acted pretty silly towards each other for most of the novel, and while it was entertaining, I wanted to see true emotion between them. I blame it mostly on Raphael because he just did not jump off the page for me here. I loved him in the other books, especially Magic Strikes. He just felt flat to me here; it was really obvious when compared to the awesomeness that was Roman. He was an incredible addition to this story and I hope we see him in future Kate novels or even a novella of his own. I did appreciate that Andrea realized right away that she wasn't attracted to him. It was a nice change from love triangles that drag on and on due one character's indecision. That said, I am happy with the resolution to Andrea and Raphael's story and ~~happily~~ ~~patiently~~ anxiously await the next novel in the Kate Daniels' World.
