JULY UPDATE: REVIEW, also on Under the Covers

So...we have to go a year without a Kate Daniel's book. I admit, I cried, I fell to my knees and howled to the moon "whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyy" in most most despairing tone...but once they let me out the padded room (major over reaction by the way, just because you howl at the moon, it DOES NOT make you crazy!) and ate some chocolate my rational brain smoothered my crazy brain and I started to think. I like Andrea, she is a kick arse female, I wanted to...more

Don't be ridiculous. Of course I enjoyed this book. It's set in the world of Kate Daniels, my favorite urban fantasy series ever.

Magic has returned to the world, coming and going in 'waves:' when magic is up, technology fails, and vice-versa (except telephones--they're unpredictible at any time). Magic hates concrete and tall buildings, and it's been a struggle for citizens to reclaim their city from pre-Shift buildings--now rubble--and magic-powered areas of wildness. Reclamation companies spe...more

Regardless of whether Ilona Andrews writes a Kate Daniels or an Edge book, know that each time you will be getting a quality, action-packed novel. There's just something about their writing style that captures you - hook, line and sinker. The Ilona Andrews name on a book is like a guaranteed seal of fantastic entertainment. A must-read for sure!

GUNMETAL MAGIC is a guaranteed good read. Ilona Andrews skillfully mixes action, suspense, and humor with heady romance in their alternate reality Atlant...more

I've never liked Andrea and Raphael, not like I do Kate and Curran or Jim and Dali. I was hoping their book would change that, but I think I like them even less now.

I had a lot of trouble connecting to the characters and story. Andrea was cold and hard to relate to. Raphael was okay, didn't really have the most noteworthy of personalities. Basically, I like Raphael and Andrea as a couple, but not so much as individuals.

The action part bored me to tears and I really didn't care for it....more

First line:"Thud! My head hit the sidewalk. Candy jerked me up by my hair and slammed my face into the asphalt."
Favourite quote:"For the first time in my twenty-eight years I was truly living. I wanted to love and to be loved in return. I wanted happiness, and family, and children. I wanted a long life and I wanted Raphael to live it with me."

Four stars only because Ilona Andrews remains on auto-buy; if I read this book in isolation it might have been a three. On the other hand, part of what bothered me about GUNMETAL MAGIC is that I could see the patented Ilona Andrews formula at work - huge monsters that regularly pop out of the woodwork to keep the pace high; a villain who has the exact same sense of humor as Andrea and Kate - and wasn't as charmed as I usually am.

For me the real problem was Andrea and Raphael. The novel takes pla...more

Let me open this review with an apology to many of my friends here. I know many of you love this book...and I think that's great. I'm just not Ilona Andrews' target audience.

Only got around 50 pages through this and tossed it into the "return to the library" bag. Around page 30 we start to bemoan how Raphael broke our heart and it was still going on on page 50. we were in a meeting with said Raphael, we were sniping at each other and "my heart" (this referring to the protagonist) was broken into...more

Life has hit rock bottom for Andrea. After finding out she was a shapeshifter, the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid kicked her out with prejudice, leaving her without the stability of the only real family and loyalty she has ever known. Even worse is the fact that she lost the loyalty of her mate, Raphael when she chose the Order over his Pack. The only thing holding her together is her work with her best friend, Kate in their investigative...more

Andrea Nash, a former Knight of the Order is finally getting her life back in order. She's adjusting to life outside the Order, she's working as a PI at her new business - Cutting Edge with best friend Kate, she's beginning to accept her bouda side and she's trying to forget her ex-boyfriend, Raphael.
Business at Cutting Edge is slow until Andrea is asked to investigate the murders of 4 members of the pack that were guarding one of Raphael's reclamation sites. Even though And...more

I had conspired to break the law with my ex-boyfriend, who I professed to hate, broken said law, destroyed the victim's attack dog/magic creature in a fit of murderous frenzy, and then ran away across the city, wandered around some woods, and fell asleep in a tree in my beastkin shape. When I went off the rails, I didn't do it halfway. No, I flipped a few times, caught a lot of air, and then exploded in a fiery crash.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to review this book early and let me...more

3.5 stars, I'm thinking. Maybe. Maybe not.

I was really excited to read this, because I lub the authors with every fiber of my soul, but I was disappointed. I had hoped to love this book, but ended up only liking it.

I love all the characters. I love Andrea. I love Rafael. I love all the supporting characters. Love. All. Really. BUT, I can't help but compare Andrea to Kate. I just love Kate SOOO much. She's my favorite heroine evar and yes, she's in this book, but all that did was make me want mor...more

I should start by saying that I have really enjoyed most of the stories written by Andrews and her husband. I have always liked Andrea as a character and wanted to read her story. This didn't quite live up to my expectations though and I've vacillated between ratings.

The crazy mythological smorgasbord couldn't really hold my attention this time. I could overlook that if the characterizations were amazing but this fell short. In the course of their story, some of the decisions Andrea and Raphael...more

I'm so sad that my most anticipated book this year didn't do it for me. How frustrating is that? A book set in my favorite fantasy world without the main attraction. I feel like a Griswold staring pitifully at the locked gates to WallyWorld.

Andrea and Raphael are no Kate and Curren.

Imagine an In Death sans Eve and Roarke, an Outlander without Jamie and Claire, a Sherlock Holmes minus Sherlock....

I liked it. I just didn't like it as much as i liked the other stories of the Kate Daniels series.
I like Andrea. I won't say that i like her more than Kate. Because they're different characters, and to which one their strenghts, and then, there are some storylines which i prefer above others. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them. That is my main problem with this story, i just wasn't all that interested in it.

I like the characters, but the storyline wasn't a favorite...

That, ladies and gents, is how you write a spin-off.

This book achieved the difficult balance required of spin-offs; there was just enough of the principal characters from the parent series to make me smile from the mini-reunion, but their presence in no way overpowered the main characters for this book (Andrea and Raphael).

I've gotta be honest with you - I've never been a huge fan of Andrea and Raphael's relationship. For the most part, I just wanted to smack the both of them upside the head and...more

Gunmetal Magic is an amazing beginning to what is sure to be a fantastic spin-off series from Ilona Andrews. But, then again, I expected nothing less. While I suspect I've been reading too much of Ilona Andrews and too little of it that actually features Kate as a protagonist lately, I was still more than a little pleased to be back in this world. One of the biggest surprises of Ilona Andrews is the fact that despite the formulaic quality of their books, even with a protagonist who isn't Kate, t...more

If I could I would give this 3.5 stars...I'm rounding up. This is definitely a must read for fans of the Kate Daniels series, I don't think this would read well as a stand-alone for people who are not familiar with this series.

I really liked this spin-off book set in the Kate Daniels world. It had the usual awesome fast paced writing, sarcastic humor and top notch world building complete with a fantastic take on Egyptian mythology. The first few chapters and actually first half were awesome and...more

CAUTION: Long Review

I thought there were a few things that fell short by the end Gunmetal Magic (GM) met my expectation of an engaging and exciting read. Not to mention there were some other things that caught me by surprise in great way.

The Love Triangle

There wasn't really a love triangle and I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I hate love triangles. I find them to be the laziest way to introduce conflict into a romance. Not to mention how unrealistic (in the probability sense) love tr...more

It's Andrea, bitch!

I have to admit, I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy Andrea's POV; I thought I would miss Kate more, but it turns out that Andrea's just as much of a badass as Kate, just with different weapons selection.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for her ex, Raphael. He is no Curran. Not that I would have expected him to match up to my book husband, but he didn't even come close. He ticked me (and Andrea) off quite royally at the outset and acted like the spoiled baby he's been...more

Note to self: the summary is enough for me to remember the grand scheme of the book; so no need to rewrite it ...

WARNING: LONG OPINION AHEAD.

Character Wise
I really enjoy this spin-off story of Andrea Nash, beastkin extraordinaire, best friend of Kate the Consort. I guess Andrea charms me because of her broken childhood. As a beastkin (her father started his life as hyena but the Lyc-V virus turned him into a human, instead of the other way around), Andrea had been physically abused as a child....more

Ilona and Andrew did it again this book was AMAZING!
Ilona could probably write a paragraph and make it the most interesting paragraph ever. Now I'll just have to wait for their next Kate's Daniel book, and one thing I know for sure is that there not going to disappoint.

Andrea has never been able to count on anyone and anything all she has accomplish has been done on her own sweat and blood, but when things where starting to change and she knew she could count on Raphael and Kate but than a trage...more

After Reading:
It would seem my prayers went unanswered after all. The book is like Bayou Moon, aka the one that everyone loved to pieces but which I found to be exceedingly boring.

The short version:
The only really positive thing I have to say is about the quality of the writing. It is top-notch. This is something that can't be overstated enough - just how good the work Ilona Andrews does. No matter my many complaints, I can't deny this is good writing, some of the very best I have ever read. T...more

Yes, I changed my mind, 4.5 instead of 5

I love this book, it was addictive (as all Ilona Andrew's books), full of action and humor. I read it in one day ... and now I'm sad it ended.

if I liked Raphael ... now I love him (When he put Aunt B's picture on Andrea's living room was hilarious).

And Roman ... he stole my heart with this scene:

I enjoy Andrea and Rafael's relationship, particularly when they're working together as fighters. They're in perfect tune. My one beef about this aspect is that Andrea reads exactly like Kate. At one point, when I had had to put the book down to do something else for a while, I got confused and thought I'd opened up a Kate Daniels book.

I'm not sure how to fix that, though. One of the reasons Andrea and Kate are best friends is that they're cut from the same cloth. They spend a lot of time togeth...more

This book amazed me. That’s different than “this book is amazing” (although it is, that). What I mean is that I didn’t expect to be so wowed by it. The world, the characters, the storyline, all of it was so vividly built that I had no trouble at all picturing the Kate Daniels World.

I can’t get over how seamlessly the writing flows, at how darkly beautiful the world is, and how well-written this book is. I almost can’t even write my review because I...more

When Ilona Andrews first announced that they would be writing a whole full length novel for Andrea, I thought: “That should be interesting. After all, Andrea is a great character.” Okay, that didn’t come across quite as I hoped… What I mean is that I didn’t particularly feel strongly either way…but now I am SO glad Gunmetal Magic was written because the book was amazing and I do believe that Andrea has the potential to rival Kate on the kick ass meter.

Summary, in which Paula and I break our opinion down into this lovely gem:

PAULA: I do love it. A little disappointed with the lack of Raphael in the book. Wish we got more of him but I understand that this is Andrea’s book and it’s about her trying to figure herself out. And boy when she makes up her mind, she goes all the way. I love that she just runs around in her beast form for half the book. Go Andrea! I am happy with the book though. It’s defini...more

This book was classic Andrews. Lots of magic, action, godly interference, and of course snark! While I didn't love this quite as much as a Kate book, I still enjoyed the visit to magical Atlanta and learning Andrea's side of the story.

Andrea Nash is trying to put her life back together and part of that involves facing up to her ex-boyfriend Raphael. When the pack asks for her help investigating the murders of Raphael's reclamation workers, they are both forced to face their feelings and work tog...more

"What?"
"Your horse looks pink."
"So?"
"If you paste some stars on her butt you'll be riding My Little Pony."
"Bugger off." I patted the mare's neck. "Don't listen to her, Sugar. You are the cutest horsey ever. The correct name for her color is strawberry roan, by the way."
"Strawberry Shortcake, more like it. Does Strawberry Shortcake know you stole her horse? She will be berry, berry angry with you."
