A subtle magical realism picture book about a boy grieving the loss of his mother. The text is quite bare, leaving so much of the story up to the illustrations. Definitely made me cry.

Could be a good choice for a child who is set against reading books where the message of grieving is overt. Talking cats in the text, and all the feelings in the illustrations.

Rich, surprising and moving story. Dances between heartbreak and optimism. Younger kids will enjoy the fantasy elements; older children will sense the gravity of the relationships.
