Confessions of a Rentboy
by
T.R. Verten (Goodreads Author)
Acerbic twenty-something Andy is living the dream in London. Too bad he's totally broke. The way to getting paid is getting laid -- or at least that's what he discovers when his friend Michelle introduces him to her somewhat-highly-paid and definitely not glamourous world of call girls and boys. Told with frankness and biting humor, Andy sleeps his way through London: for...more

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got this book, but boy was I in for a ride. I love a story that sucks you in and doesn’t let go until the end. That is exactly what happened to me while reading. What can I say without giving away spoilers? This book is like “Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” with a m/m twist.
Andy is a “bi-sexual” man, but really a m/m romance guy at heart. The author tells the story as if you are sitting in th...more

When someone describes a work as "erotic" or something similar, I tend to want to shut my brain down and scroll through it until I hit a word that lets me know there's about to be some action. This book, however, had me right from the start, with an endearingly tough lead character, Andy, who addresses the reader with carefully sculpted nonchalance. The reader is in on Andy's internal monologue, including all of the fears and insecurities behind his swagger. The author doesn't neglect the people...more
Confessions of a Rent Boy was one of those books I may never have read if the author hadn't sent it to me to review. The author is new to me and I'd never heard of the publisher, and since I'm one of these rather conservative readers who tends to stick to the bigger league m/m publishers this book would have passed me by entirely. What a huge shame that would have been because I found this book utterly compelling.

The book blurb describes this novel to perfection. It’s a fascinating read. Andy narrates the story in the fashion of a memoir, detailing the ins and outs of high-class prostitution. Throughout the story, he draws in the reader with quips of wisdoms, commentary, and he tells the readers to think about what he’s telling. The story construction allows for a balance between confession, commentary, and action modes. The descriptions are direct and the details are dirty, downright offensive. Being an...more
This was a really great book. Somewhat similar to Fifteen Shades of Gay in that a guy turns to selling himself for sex in order to make ends meet and chronicles his encounters. However there was more to the story as Andy really tries to figure out his place in the world. Great writing by this author, T.R. Verten. Nice flow and development of characters and great humor mixed with the drama.
This book was a bit scattered for me. There was jumping from time to time or old thoughts or fantasies. This may not be an issue for some but it just irked me a bit.
Andy himself was funny, cynical, not overly attractive and yet still sweet. I liked his thinking and how he told his story if only i had a more clear image of the 'time'.
I really started to get into the story around 65% and then it rushed to the end. :/

This is a wonderful book. There is a lot of, er, filth, but it doesn't feel like filth for the sake of filth - every scene adds something. The narrator is wonderfully defensive and vulnerable. Every character, even incidental ones, feel three-dimensional and real. The story takes a turn half-way through that feel slightly abrupt, but it works as a whole, and there is a discussion of love and sex I really liked.
Fascinating story narrated by a cynical yet strangely sweet rentboy, Andy. He freely admits to not being all that great to look at, but he loves to be the best for his clients and watches them carefully to give them what they need.
This isn't romance, although there's a old (abusive) relationship rekindled, and Andy spends most of the narrative mired in unrequited love for one of his rentboy friends who barely notices his existence. Also, m/m fans be warned - Andy is bi and there are a few m/f sc...more

This is more than just a rentboy's confessions. The character of Andy is fully fleshed out, which is always important but surprising given the length of the story. There's intelligence in the writing, and some lines read like poetry with their true to life statements. Of course the sex scenes are hot, but that's not the only reason you should give this a read!
A pretty damned extraordinary novella, as impressive on a subtextual level as it is on the surface.
The psyche of the narrator, Andy, is surprisingly complex, full of insight and delusion, brashness and vulnerability in equal measure. But the author never lets him or his story devolve into melodrama, never lets his voice become self-pitying.
This isn't smut, but it's explicit -- sometimes brutally so. This isn't a romance, yet Andy is, at his core, every inch the romantic -- often poignantly so....more

Unbeknownst to her dissertation committee, TR Verten was really a spy in the house of academia. A decade of bone-dry work on Realist representation turned out to be an aesthetic manifesto in disguise. By day she tinkers with verbs while wearing a false mustache; at night she plasters the city’s walls with wheatpaste.
