A great and accessible historical narrative story for adults and younger adults as well. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.
James joins the circus in the mid 1860s before the Civil War. He falls in love with the owner's daughter. They have some adventures along the way. This is a prelude to another novel that is MUCH longer about the Civil War years. The story is his recollection of his grandmother's stories told to her by her mother,Miranda.

The story is easy to read. Sometimes it is very descriptive. However, there is not much character development.
I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping for something along the lines of another Water for Elephants but this was not it.

A simple story.
A very quick read, and quite interesting as well. I learned much about the circus that I found to be fascinating.
