This story combines a "kiss a frog" from the fairy tales, with the environmental of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm. It may not be a perfect comparison, but it is what I saw. Taylor loves her grandmother and the pond on her property has always been special. A toad, Tad, considers the pond his home, so it is also his sanctuary. Unfortunately, the pond is going to be turned into a strip mall. Their is one glimmer of hope as it was foretold that if a toad kisses a human, it would help. The story...more
Young, fearful toad Tad awakens from his winter sleep with a bump on his forehead and frightening dreams on his mind—dreams of his dear woodland and pond being destroyed by Rumbler (a backhoe). He learns he must find and kiss the Queen of the Hop to save the place and creatures he loves and so he begins a perilous quest to find her. Taylor is a young girl who resents her parents’ busy lives but loves the time spent with her grandmother Eve, time during which they garden, enjoy the pond and flowe...more
There once was a girl named Taylor. Taylor loves to spend time with her grandma. They work in the garden and spend time picking flowers out by the neighbor’s pond. One day the land that the pond is on gets sold, and the new owners want to get rid of the pond and put some stores there instead. THE HOP is an enchanting story that touches on many themes in an absorbing, magical tale children will love. Tad, a young hopper (toad), is sent on a quest to save his home--and that of his fellow toads--from destruction. Taylor, a young girl, has a similar mission: to prevent the wild area beside her grandmother's house from being bulldozed. Although this book has an environmental theme, which makes is an ideal Earth Day story, it touches on many other themes as well. Among them are friendship,...more
What a delightful book! I really enjoyed The Hop by Sharelle Byars Moranville This story was a very unique story of a girl and a toad. It included all the things an aged 8 to 12 year old child would like, family, fantasy, music and ecology.
This book switched between the narrator as the little girl and the toad. It did have a slow start but I'm very glad I stayed with it to the end.

The tone of the story is great, and I love the author's style. I am not always into fairy tale retellings, but this one has a nice contemporary spin on it, and makes things really interesting by incorporating the toad point of view. I really wished for more from the story, because I didn't get a real sense of how things turned out for Tad, whose psychic powers are only briefly explored, or of how the magic in the story was meant to work. I realize this might be a convention of the fairy tale gen...more
This ecology-based version of The Frog Prince is FUN! Love Tad the toad's views, and Taylor is a big-hearted sweetheart of a girl.
Caution should be taken with this book when in comes to the lower end of the targeted age group of 8-12. Taylor's grandma has cancer so it may upset more delicate children. That said, the author is a little heavy handed in this take on the "Princess and the frog" tale and tries to be Carl Hiassen with the environmental message as well. Is it good? Yes. if you have a budding environmentalist or if your family is dealing with loss, this may be a good book for you. Like I said, younger children may...more
(Advanced reading copy.) This is a charming, ecological new take on the story of the Frog Prince. The review is now available at http://moonlit-librarian.blogspot.com...

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an engineer--and some days still do. But I love being a writer and teacher of creative writing. I live on a small acreage with my husband in the midwest and am devoted to gardens and grandchildren. I spend most of my time helping things grow: ideas into stories; seeds into flowers; grandbabies into miracles.
