Jennifer Scales is just like any other fourteen-year-old girl. She's going through some...changes. But it's all normal, right?

Not exactly. In JENNIFER SCALES AND THE ANCIENT FURNACE (don't let the title keep you away; it's not what it sounds like), Jennifer's parents tell her some...surprising news. She's going to be changing a lot more than most people do at her age. In fact, she's going to be getting scales, horns, and claws--at least some of the

A weredragon teenager learning to cope with her new abilities sounds great, and that's why I decided to read this book. Unfortunately, the characters were one dimensional, learning about the dragons and their abilities was tedious, and the conflict and danger were bland. Like any teenager Jennifer is full of drama and isn't interested in the points of view of others. That doesn't make her very enjoyable or likable, which got the book off to a bad start. I was getting excited about the idea of a ...more

This didn't really work for me. The protagonist is a teen girl who discovers that her parents never told her that she's half weredragon. And her race has an ancient feud with were-arachnids and beaststalkers. While I could suspend my disbelief with the paranormal aspects of this story, I had a problem with the characters and their interactions. Jennifer often acted like a brat, lashing out at her parents over everything, for example - her dad not being there because of his job. Jennifer takes ou ...more

I am a big fan of MJD's other books, primarily the Queen Betsey series, so I expected to enjoy this book. Unfortunately, it did not grab me. I think it was the whole weredragon world that MJD created. It just didn't appeal to me and seemed almost cartoonish. Dragons that talk, have barbecues, sketch, and talk on the phone just seem a little too Disney-animated-featurish-ish. I finished the book so gave it two stars but I could have just as easily set it aside and not miss it. It did get a little ...more

Recommends it for: those interested in shapeshifting stories, strong young female characters
What’s better than a story about a girl who loves dragons, a girl who turns in-to a dragon. Jennifer is a 14 year old weredragon, from her dad’s side, learning to deal with some interesting changes, including how to walk and fly with her new clawed limbs, and how to chat up the new boy in class.
The sequel has just come out and a third one is on the way.

Thoughts:
This YA novel, tends to be difficult to find on the shelves of either the bookstore or libraries, however, those interested in a contemp

Jennifer Scales thought she was prepared for being a teenager---soccer, friends, noticing boys.... except that in her case, she got a lot more changes with puberty than most kids. Turns out she's inherited her father's ability to turn into a weredragon, too. Her transformations are tied to the crescent moon, which means avoiding everyone not a dragon often enough to put a severe crimp in her social life. But the biggest problem may not be explaining why she has to miss school so often, because w ...more

Doch n

So! Heute morgen fertig gelesen.

Also Fazit:

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. We grabbed the series on a whim when we saw a bunch of books for $1 each; my husband thought maybe our daughters would like it when they got a little older. I wanted to screen it first, though, to make sure it was something I'd want them reading.

While the protagonist is a bit of a bratty 14 yr old, it doesn't get as hung up on that as some books do, and enough of the rest of it held my interest that that part didn't bother me too much.

The weredragon idea

I will give pretty much anything a read if it promises people who shapeshift into dragons.

The writing is rather juvenile, but the main character is quickly established as being only 14 - I probably would have enjoyed this story at that age. This novel is pretty much the antithesis to the current YA novel trend of absent parents, Jennifer's family is very much the main focus of the story. She seems to feel at once stifled by the overprotective parents, and insulted that the father isn't around fo

Fourteen year old Jennifer Scales surprised her soccer teammates with an impossible jump and kick to win their soccer game. That was just the beginning of the surprises as Jennifer finds herself turning into a dragon that can fly and breathe fire! She learns that her father is a weredragon and so is she! This really complicates her school and social life especially after she learns that she is only in dragon form during a crescent moon. She comes to grips with her strange gifts as an ancient en ...more

I think this is the first author I've ever read who (according to her blog, anyway) says her books kinda start off as big ol' chunks of dialogue, then she has to grit her teeth and go back in and add descriptions. Sounds like my writing!

I was pleasantly surprised at how solid this was. Near the end, I was afraid this would be a 'TO BE CONTINUED' ending, but she actually did a nice job of making a short-but-effective climax battle. (And the end twists actually surprised me a bit!)

I liked the firs

If it weren't for the main character's age and the fact that there is no requisite sex scene, this could be any one of the better adult paranormal/fantasy novels on the market today. I think this one actually stands out because of the nature of Jennifer's 'beast'. The authors do an exquisite job of fleshing out the book's teen heroine. She is moody, angsty, and removed from her parents. She is desperate to be anything but the 'freak', she just wants to fit in. The plot from start to finish is en ...more

Jennifer Scales is a fun, sports loving teenage girl that is having a few more than your avarage growing pains.

Turning into a dragon, upside down goals on the field and putting the resident school bully in his place will have you pulling an all nighter to get to the end. I hope this gets turned into a series on the CW.

This is another of those books I have eyed for years but never got around to read. When I spotted it on the library's webpage, I downloaded it on a whim. I was in the mood for a something short, and something that wasn't romance. This one fit my needs. I couldn't put it down. The voice were smooth, with a touch of humor. The worldbuilding felt solid, the secondary characters were interesting. But what made the story for me was Jennifer. Her struggles to adjust to her new life felt real, how when ...more

You know how you went through changes at puberty? Jennifer did too. Only hers changed her into a dragon. She's a little pissed off that her parents neglected to mention this side of her genetic heritage and can you blame her? One of the things that attracts me to certain YA series is how realistic the teenager is. Jennifer is realistic. She hates being a dragon, hates that her parents kept this a secret from her, hates that she has to keep secrets from her friends, worries that her life will nev ...more

Unfortunately I just wanted more out of this book. I know it's for YA and I read a lot of YA but it was not quite enough for me. I wanted more dragons, more fantasy, not more teenage angst and relationship issues.

Summary: She knew that growing up would mean changing. But Jennifer wasn't prepared for the blue scales or the claws, since no one had told her that she came from a bloodline of weredragons. Her greatest challenge? Protecting herself from her family's ancient enemies and preparing herself for fierce battles. And that's a lot to expect of a girl just coming into her own.

I have enjoyed reading the Queen Betsy series and some of the Wyndham Werewolf books by MaryJanice Davidson and thought I would give this series a try. I really enjoyed this story of Jennifer, a 14 year old with an attitude(duh!) who just finds out she is a weredragon!
Jennifer trys to find out how she fits in with the world as she learns about her dragon form and others of her kind. But, her mom is not a weredragon so does that make her a freak among freaks...

Jennifer Scales thought she was a typical freshman in high school. Her parents annoyed her, and she was worried about fitting in. Then, at a soccer game she does an amazing flip-kick to score the winning goal. People started being a little weird around her.
Then her parents sit her down to have a 'talk' about some changes that are occurring in her. Only it's not your typical talk. It turns out that Jennifer is a weredragon, and it runs in her family. Now, she has a new set of skills, traditions
