Rarely is history documented in such a way as to allow the reader to get a tangible taste of the surroundings of an era - let alone an era as magical as the '50s and '60s New York and its jazz scene. This book accomplishes such a feat. It's in the details: one picture captures a broken window pane on the 821, 6th Ave. building, the caption unfolds the story behind it and the reader is aurally transferred on the top floor loft where the cats are jamming at 3 a.m., right after Birdland has closed ...more
