The stats are in and, unsurprisingly to most people, Romance Novels are pretty much beating out the competition. Despite the poor economy and almost every other genre of book experiencing a general reduction in sales, Harlequin still managed to post a 32% sales increase in 2009. Stats for 2010 show that romance novels account for more than 13% of the market, easily beating out every other genre. Their ebook sales are even better with romance ebooks sitting in second place sales as of 2010.

Holy crap this was boring! The relationship had no passion and made me yawn as they waxed poetic about how organic food is the awesome. The story just meandered along, I was not excited to read it because I was never drawn into the main characters. The author also had a really annoying trait of adding random sentences in quotation marks (just like this) which should have been taken out by an editor. The only intriguing part was the wannabe Acheron character (named Seth here - see I can use paren...more

Darkness Dawns is a must read for 2011! This is the first book in a series called Immortal Guardians and its a phenomenal start. Action starts off at the get go and leaves you on the edge of your seat through the whole book. I loved how everything is explained where you have no questions, but yet the author didn’t skip out on the passion or action with this adventure. These Immortals have different ability gifts and are like vampires with a twist.

Heroine Sarah is a organic nut and school teache...more

Excellent! Brilliant Writing! HOT Erotica!

I absolutely loved it. I could hardly put it down and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I now have a new and great vampire series I am addicted to. I loved the concept of these Immortal Guardians and how they slightly differ from the vampires. The romance erotica scene between Roland and Sarah is absolutely fantastic and so HOT! Their romance story had me smiling all through out the book and I even laughed out loud when Sarah stabbed one of the Immora...more

It's a bad sign when before you get to 5%, you are already hitting your head against something hard - and if you end up pissed and frequently ranting for 95% of the book. Granted, this was partially due to my general crankiness for the majority of the time I was reading this, which may have affected how I perceived this book, but it also had to do with the things I've read previously. Or maybe it was just the book.

Within the first 5%, I immediately saw the world's resemblance to the wo...more

SUMMARY (50 word or less)

Dianne Duvall is truly a gifted writer. Darkness Dawns is a fresh take on an old legend. Diane has breathed life into vampires without making them sparkle. Her vision is a mesh of the old and her own vision of the new....more
This book is clearly...hands down a five star +++ all the way. It grabbed ahold of me right from the first page and didn't let me go until the final page. My god what an awesome f---ing read. Ms Duvall you out did yourself. Your writing is so fluid, and are definitely in my top ten favs.
The characters drew me in and held on tight and I didn't mind one damn bit. They are quick witted and intense and so engaging. I loved the world building, it was so easy to follow, not once did I h...more
Wow, what a pleasant surprise. I got this book as a Kindle freebie, and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. What I got was a terrific first installment in this new series. I was hooked from the first page, the story moved along nicely with just enough detail to hold your interest, but not bore you out of your mind. The H and h, Roland and Sarah, had sizzling chemistry that exploded when they finally acted on their feelings for each other. HOT! The secondary characters, especially Seth and Marcus,...more
3.5 stars

This one is a very pleasant read albeit I find both the H/h a tad too sweet and too perfect for my taste. There is a lack of surprises and intensity in the romance, but the action scenes did help to speed up the pacing of the book. The thing that irked me most is the short time frame that it took for Roland and Sarah to start proclaiming their love. I just can't wrapped my head around on the fact that they get all chummy and start trading life stories within 24 hours and then planning t...more
Guess what I did after reading this book? I deleted a large portion of the paranormal-romance books I had marked as to-read, solely based on the fear of duplicating my experience with this book. I refuse to read any pnr unless I am largely confident in my ability to enjoy the book some how or other.

Many reviewers have enjoyed this book. I am happy for them. Really. But I do not understand why. Maybe if this were my first pnr book ever, I would have found something resembling originality. This i...more
Incredibly addictive read! The storyline kept me VERY interested and the good writing kept me on the edge of my seat!

The romance between Roland and Sarah was really lovely and well timed. (I believed it.) I normally don't go for books with a ton of action, but this one wasn't over the top and it actually made the story even better; which was really a nice surprise! I also loved being in Sarah's head and knowing how she fantasized about Roland, who also happened to be immortal. Though, Sarah dos...more

A friend recommended DARKNESS DAWNS to me and after reading this book, I must admit that my friends have really great taste! DARKNESS DAWNS was a fast, enjoyable read. The writing was sharp and witty and the dialogue kept me engaged. Although I really enjoyed the main characters, Sarah and Roland, the secondary characters also were engaging. Ms. Duvall left some very interesting questions unanswered, which will ensure that I keep reading this series, but still provided closure and the HEA I long...more
When the very normal Sarah bravely acts to rescue an injured stranger from torture and certain death, she is drawn into a world she never dreamed existed – for Roland is not truly the undercover DEA agent he first claims to be but an immortal protector who guards humanity from predation by insane vampires.

Even though I am no longer a huge fan of vamps, I actually really enjoyed this debut effort. Author Duvall brings some science and enough of a twist to the vampire mythos here to avoid some of...more
Another PNR series for me to get stuck into. Oh yeah!

A little bit similar to the Dark Hunter books (at least in terms of the character set up), this is a series where it’s Immortals (good guys) vs Vampires (bad guys) existing in secret alongside humankind.

We are introduced to the world of Immortals when human Sarah comes across a man being tortured in the woods behind her house. Going all badass with a shovel, she saves the guy and brings him back to her house, tending his wounds and caring for...more
Well, if you follow this blog... or at least the book boyfriend meme on this blog, you can already guess that I enjoyed this book. Fine... I'll just say it... it's a good PNR! Now on to the review:

Ah yes... Roland, one who was thought to be anti-social and a royal pain in the.. uh... hiney is very swoon worthy! He "meets" a young music teacher, Sarah who is strong, independent and a bit weary of others herself. Roland finds himself wanting to protect the young mortal from danger he feels he brou...more

Darkness Dawns is a stellar debut for author Dianne Duvall and her Immortal Guardians series! It’s been a while since a novel has kept me up all night because I just could not set it down!

Sarah Bingham is a music professor and a bit of an organic freak. After a night suffering from insomnia she sets outs before dawn to ready an area for her vegetable garden when a series of events leads her to a man staked in the ground bleeding profusely; and stark naked. She takes him home to nurse him back to...more
-- A Romantic Book Affairs Review

Where to start. I've slept since finishing it, so all of the myriad things that bugged me so greatly yesterday have had time to settle and hide in my brain...

Well, I will start with Roland. He is supposed to be 936 years old but there really is no hint throughout the book to that affect - unless you count using the word "trencher" or referring to his kids as "babes." Otherwise, he was like any other man from the 21st Century. Not to mention he is supposed to be t...more
Alright. This book was stupid good. I rarely give any books 5 stars because I like to reserve 5 stars for a book I'd read over and over. This one, I'd probably read again but it was so beyond many other books I've read lately that I HAD to give it 5 stars. Let me give you an overview before I get into what I fell in love with...

Darkness Dawns is another paranormal romance. We first meet Sarah Bingham. She's a professor, I think, of music or something like that. Sounds like she has just recently...more

A brilliant and entertaining read! It had the feel of one of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter novels or a J.R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood read. Filled with action, hot sexy scenes and laughs, a great example of a perfect paranormal romance read. I thoroughly enjoyed the two main characters, Sarah was everything I love in a female lead, and she was strong, brave and a little quirky. I laughed out loud when she stabbed Bastien in the ass, not to mention at the start when she knocked out the bad g...more

Sarah is a music professor tending a garden in her back yard when her life is interrupted by vampires, minion thugs and what she assumes is a man who is outnumbered and about to be killed. I like Sarah, she is brave. Wielding only a shovel she goes after the guys who are harming an unarmed man in the woods behind her home. Instead of breaking down into a frantic useless blob when she discovers the condition Roland is in, she keeps herself together to help him as quickly and carefully as possibl...more

It was not yet dawn when Sarah Bingham stumbled onto a sadistic scene of torture in the woods beyond her house. Without thinking, she took the shovel in her hand and solidly connected with the heads of the two men who had stripped, stabbed, and staked a third man to the ground. Fighting her horror, she manages to free Roland Warbrook and get him back to her house to patch him up a little. She couldn't understand why he didn't want her to call 911 or take him to a hospital, and his...more

I enjoyed my first dive into Dianne Duvall's world. They way that she set up the rest of the stories, I'm REALLY looking forward to reading more in the series and seeing the other Immortal Guardians get their happy endings.

The GOOD: I liked Sarah and Roland together. They are a strong couple. She is brave and compassionate. He is a warrior, is hot, posessive, all those lovely alpha male characteristics. I liked their romance and the sex was pretty awesome. Dianne Duvall writes a good scene! I a...more

Sarah thought she would go out to garden early before dawn since she couldn't sleep anyway only to be mowed down by something very fast and strong then followed by two men. Brushing it off as hunters chasing a wild animal she went on with her gardening. It wasn't in till the men started talking and making her realize that it was a man that had ran into her and these men plan on killing him. On impulse she grabs her shovel and goes to his aid.

Roland cannot fathom the kindness this beautiful stra...more
We must eat healthy food... I know... I KNOW!!!

BUT PLEEEEEEEEEEEEASE don't try to lecture me, or I'll get MAD!

About the story
Sarah Bingham is a not very "normal" music teacher... she is a very kick ass lady, able to learn how to fight in only days, and fire a weapon like she born doing it. I like her a lot, but some of her aspects, like this "born to kill" seems a little exaggerated.
Roland is an immortal, aka a VERY hot and INCREDIBLE vampire. Ok, maybe you feel my angriness about Sarah, well,...more
Okay, so where should I start!? This book was better than I expected it to be. At first I thought it would be similar to the Midnightbreed series but I was left speechless. This book has it's own unique story and incredible characters that make your pulse race!!! ITs HOT! ;)

My fave part of the book was the relationship Ronald and Sarah share. It's pretty hilarious and intense and sweet all at the same time. It was so funny, cause in the beginning after Sarah saves Ronald from an unfortunate situ...more

My first reaction after finishing this book is a resounding "Awwwwwwwwwwwwww!"

It was such a touching love story! Don't get me wrong it was sexy too, as all these paranormal romances tend to be, it's not all mushy lovey dovey stuff, but the connection that developed between the characters was so compelling I totally fell in love right along with them. It has me in a kind of ooey, gooey state of contented bliss as I close the final pages.

Both the hero and heroine were refreshing and extremely end...more

VEGAN VAMPIRES??? Seriously it was completely ridiculous. The constant preaching about healthy eating pissed me off! I was ready to throw my e-reader across the room.

It was fluffy, nonsensical and the plot was weak. The world building was completely ripped off from Sherrilyn Kenyon (who I absolutely adore) and that alone annoyed me. The romance was contrived, there was too much 'filler sex' and no substance.

I wouldn't recommend this book at all, and while I admire people t...more
A pretty good first-in-a-series. It was entertaining and interesting. The storyline centers around a group of immortal guardians who protect the world from vampires. Not a particularly novel idea but a popular one nonetheless. In this first book, Sara, a human, finds herself inadvertently caught in the middle of a war for revenge against a handsome man she saves from being staked. The usual attraction - lust - love follows with the predictable problem of human/immortal relationships and how to m...more

Whooooa. Found this on my audio library app on my phone and thought I'd give it a try. Um.
Sooooo glad I did. Very steamy, a nice change of pace on the vampire lore and I'll never look at men with dark hair and dark eyes quite the same again. My GOODNESS.

The only thing keeping this from a 5 star is the info dump scenes between Sara and Roland. There were just a little too many of the explanation type scenes that slowed things down some. I understand the need for them. This is the first in a s...more
This really could have been an amazing read but it suffered from two thing: info dump and the author's incessant need to tell instead of show. I realize there is going to be some heavy background in a first book of a series, but not to this extent. For example: if there are 6 people in a scene, the author described them ALL in detail. There was also quite a bit of the authors (I'm assuming) views that organic is best. If I read the word organic once, I read it 450 times, and that is not an exagg...more
