This is one of Tyler's earlier works, but one of the most recent I read. I could really tell that it was an earlier novel (perhaps her first published?), but I still found it a good read. She has such a wonderful way of creating these quirky characters and quirky situations. That is one of the things I have taken away from her books - putting two strange dynamics together and seeing what happens. The character of Evie is lost and a bit melancholy and ends up with a "rock star." It's a ...more

This is one of the strangest books I have ever read. It is extremely compelling. I couldn't put it down. However, the whole time, I just kept thinking, "This chick is a psycho!" And she really is. She becomes obsessed with this kid in a band, and so she carves his name backward in her forehead with a pocket knife. And then it maintains about that level of strangeness throughout. Definitely well written, but super bizarre.

This kept gnawing at me.. I feel like I have experienced this minus the self-mutilation. The movie made the feeling worse.. which meant it was a good adaptation, imo. only thing is she still got the guy.. i didn't, which as time grows on.. is eventually a good thing.

I read this book back in High School and even then, I really did not like it. I like other works by Tyler, but this one was a stinker. Kind of dumb premise. Try other works by Anne Tyler, you will like them better.

I love Anne Tyler -- some of her books more than others. This one I liked. It has faded where others of hers have not. It may say more about me than about this books but that's how it is.

I wrote my honors these on this book and its film adaptation so I am very familiar with it. I like Anne Tyler's writing and I can empathize with Evie.

I think Anne Tyler is underrated, and this (one of her first three, completely unknown novels) is my favourite.

I think this was one of her first novels, if not her very first, and it was kind of weird. But not bad.

Early Anne Tyler. I love Anne Tyler. I'd read the phone book if she wrote it.

Not her best, though good in its own way.
