I'd noticed a forming pattern with the Negima! series, as I liked volume 4 more than 3, volume 6 more than 5 and volume 8 more than 7. I was almost expecting every odd-numbered volume to be of lesser quality than its predecessor (or successor).

However, volume 9 breaks that pattern. The fanservice is pretty low this time around, but the story is strong and the little subplot about the ghostly Aisaka is sweetly touching. Of course, volume 9 is merely setting the stage for volume 10 (which I am VER

Mahora Academy is caught up in the excitement of the Academy Festival. While the students busy themselves getting ready for the activities, almost everyone in Negi's class is back to their old schemes--trying to secure Negi as their boyfriend (even though they're 14 and 15 and he's only 10). Negi could find himself trapped in love if he's not careful: rumor has it that the "world tree" can make people fall in love on the last day of the festival.

Easily the best issue in the series to date, Volume 9 keeps the fan service to a minimum, using it solely for relatively appropriate jokes about being a teenager and dating. While it doesn't advance Negi's personal story, it does a great deal to expand the world around him. Not sure it's worth reading the 8 volumes beforehand to get to this point, but still an enjoyable read.

In his teenage years, Akamatsu failed the entrance exam to Tokyo University, and applied for Film Study instead (it is speculated that this is where he got the idea for Love Hina).
