Can She Outwit Fate?

Gemma is on a collision course with heartbreak. At least, according to the fortune-teller her best friend drags her to see. Gemma doesn't believe a word of it, but when other predictions start to come true, she begins to suspect that gorgeous, gray-eyed Nick is the man foretold to break her heart before she can find her soul mate. Too bad she's never m...more

Ugh. I had to start skimming toward the end because it'd reached the point of being too ridiculous. That this woman would dictate her life, especially her love life, on something a gypsy told her - one who she played a LOT of money to, btw - makes no sense to me.

It just. Blah. Went too far. It was like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days but WORSE, if that's possible. Which is too bad because until about halfway it was kind of a fun book.

How, HOW can this guy fall in love with Gemma during this I will...more

While I enjoyed parts of Second-Guessing Fate, I was a bit disappointed in this book. I thought it was kind of silly, and it seemed disjointed to me in places when it transitioned quickly from one scene to another. I loved the main male character, Nick, but the main female, Gemma, I found quite annoying. The storyline was kind of cute, but could have been done better.

The fortune teller Gemma goes to tells her a good looking man will break her heart before she finds her soul mate. When she meets...more

Second Guessing Fate is the story of Gemma. Gemma visits a fortune teller, Madam Hooch, and she tells Gemma “Eez a bad, bad time. Eet is – how you say – big achy heart.”

At which point in time I wanted to bust out singing Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart

But Madam Hooch continues spouting her magical knowledge. “Eez a big love and the man, ah, he eez dark and so handsome, but eez no good for you. He break y...more

Just got the Go-Ahead to post this review - I recieved the e-ARC the other day and I really loved it! The book comes out September 26th :)

Way cute book! This book had me laughing and rolling my eyes so much :) Loved it!

We start off with Helen and Gemma heading to a fortune teller - not by choice, Helen got Gemma drunk enough to convince her to go - but she promised non-the-less :)

See Gemma was engaged a few years ago - but the night before the wedding, Simon left her - changed his mind. Gemma...more

Gemma doesn’t have it easy with relationships. Not only does she have bad luck with the guys but they usually leave her heart-broken and/or cheated on. Gemma has generally given up on men and when her best friend asks her to go to a fortune-teller to find out about her future love life, Gemma isn’t particularly jumping up and down out of enthusiasm. When the fortune-teller predicts that Gemma will meet the love of her life soon, she is still wary but sec...more

I laughed out loud. I smiled tenderly. And, most of all, I finished reading this delightful book relaxed and feeling good after a stressful day.

Fast paced, full of down-to-earth human moments, and yet peppered with steamy romance, this contemporary romance by Claire Robyns delivered exactly what it promised: a fun, flirty and fabulous read.

I was drawn to Ms Robyns writing through her brilliant debut novel, the historical Scottish romance 'Betrayed'. The light-hearted 'Second Guessing Fate' is...more

This book reminded me so much of the movie How to Lost a Guy in 10 Days, only better.
Instead of two people making ridiculous bets with their friends and co-workers we have the formidable Madame Hooch and her unpredictable predictions and mysterious ways.
I really loved the characters in this story. I liked Gemma and thought she was a great character. I liked watching her grow through out the story and I loved her antics with Nicholas. Some of them were out right crazy and funny.
And Nick, well Nic...more

I'm not sure how to rate this book. It hit a lot of my pet peeves.

Most of the characters were Americans in New York but they all think and speak like they are British. Didn't the author/editors have anyone American read it before it was published?

The heroine was British though. Well, she was mostly British, having been born in the US to American parents who moved the family to England when Gemma was young. At least I'm assuming her parents are American since we're never told otherwise. It's a...more

Ms. Robyns writes fresh, feel-good romance. Her characters are engaging and well-drawn. Gemma (the heroine), is warm and witty, and readers can instantly relate to her. Nick (the hero), is super-sexy and knows exactly what he wants. The interaction between Nick and Gemma is fun and flirty, with a delicious dollop of sensuality. Ms. Robyns has a real flair for writing dialogue, and the sparkling attraction between Nick and Gemma had me turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning. I really...more

Weird but ok.. is what i have summed up with regards to the story plot. Why i say weird was the story plot was about how Gemma tried to get Nick to dumped her just because a fortune teller told her she will be dumped by her loved one. Both of them loved each other very much but because she worried that it may happen just like what the fortune teller told her. She wanted to change her destiny by making Nick to dump her. How she do it was rather ridiculous and at times, the way Nick put up to her...more

A very quick short read.

And very very similar to the film How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days - Which I loved. The film is sooo funny!

But...the book wasn't as good as the film.

Don't get me wrong, it was very funny in places and certain scenarios really made me laugh out loud.

But maybe its just me, I just didn't grasp the concept of it much in the book.

She wasn't trying to put him off for any other reason than a fortune teller told her he would break her heart....when it fact she was the one messing him...more

Second Guessing Fate was kindly provided to me by Netgalley for Carina Press.

Second Guessing Fate begins with Gemma visiting a fortune-teller, Madam Hooch with her best friend Helen. A few predictions are made, the most important to Gemma being she would meet a dark, handsome man but he would break her heart and her true soul-mate she would then meet. Gemma was in a serious relationship a number of years prior so is still wary of dating and relationships so this was qu...more

wow.. what a fun story.. I like this book. I like the story. it was fun. and i laughed many times when i read this..

though, sometimes, when i read the part where Gemma did something riddiculous, she annoyed me, i wanted to shake her and screamed "he's the one idiot!!!", hahaha. but I love nick, my favorite character in this book. overall, it was good. in my opinion. :)

'Second-Guessing Fate' is a light-hearted, fun contemporary romance which I highly recommend. Gemma doesn't believe in fate, until a fortune teller's predictions eerily start to come true. And that means only one thing: the tall, dark and handsome Nick is destined to break her heart. But she plans to enjoy the ride until he does, and I guarantee the reader will too.

I really liked this book. Sat down this morning and read the whole thing today. It was a read reminiscent of the movie "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". It was Laugh-Out-Loud Funny!! A cute story! Great read!

Claire Robyns has a fresh, flirty style that made this book un-put-downable for me. It's a light-hearted romance that never lags, and had me smiling right to the very end. The story is contemporary and fun, and reminiscent of "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy read, a touch of humour, and a definite feel-good feeling.

Ever since I read Claire Robyn's hot Scottish historical, BETRAYED, I was looking so forward to her contemporary, SECOND-GUESSING FATE. Just like BETRAYED, I started SGF on a Saturday and pretty much didn't stop till I finished. This book was light and funny. The dialogue had me laughing from the first page. And Nick?! *Swoon* Fun book.
