This is a very impressive book to read. Once you begin you can't put it down, until you have finished the entire novel. I love being thrown into a world that has such a mystery to it, that you want to keep reading until you have figured it out. The flashbacks are done in a such away that you are always learning something new about the characters, it may not make sense right away, but the book answer everything by the end. I was very impressed by how well written the book was how much I cared abo...more
Another great free novel from Librarything. I love their member giveaways that help me to discover new authors through reading their debut novels. I am not generally a horror reader but this book has opened my eyes to how good they can be.
Fresh Flesh is a good, actually great. debut novel. It is a horror story that kept me anxious for more of the story. I liked almost all of the story. The only part that seemed unnecessary was the parts dealing with the dirt. The dirt was a minor player througho...more

Fresh Flesh is not the type of book I would normally read, and I'm glad I gave it a chance.
This book is about an island 'experiment' where condemned prisoners are sent instead of the gas chamber. The island itself has quite a few secrets of its own to share with the men who have been sent there. The place just reeks of evil.
By chance (or maybe not?) Jessica Stanton, a wealthy woman on a cruise with her husband aboard their yacht, has been shipwrecked on the island. It is up to Richard Templin, t...more

This book gave me the willies. AT the same time this book wasn't scary so much as creepy.
Jessica gets washed up on this island in the middle of the ocean...okay not that far off but a good 400 miles from the nearest civilian. She encounters this lone man -Richard or rather Dick -who teaches her her how to live off the land. After about two months she finally hears the truth about this island. And that is where it gets creepy.

With a name like Fresh Flesh, I must admit that I was expecting a zombie story. Instead, Fresh Flesh is a modernised pulp novel, possibly best described as a cross between Battle Royale, Lord of the Flies and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And possibly a bit of Lost as well. A wealthy man and his wife are sailing towards Hawaii when their ship capsized, resulting in the death of almost everyone on board. The wife washes up on the shore of an island and is tended to by a man named Richard, who has...more
This book was a challenge for me. As a reader I really enjoy the horror-thriller genre, but this book was something else. A very different read , which I believe every lover of horror MUST read it.
Thank you, "Making Connections" for giving me the chance of reading this book! And Todd Russell, of course.
It was an intense reading. Let me tell you something. This isn't just a horror novel. It's a psychological one , too. It combines perfectly three basic elements of a psychological novel: suspence...more

After the first few pages, I wasn't that thrilled with the story. However, I had a gut feeling that I would not be able to put it down if I continued to read more. I was right. Once I started to learn the story behind the main characters, I was sucked into the island with the rest of them. The descriptions were awesome, and the story had a good concept to it. The ending was somewhat bittersweet, but being more of a horror story, it makes sense. I'll definitely have this story in the back of my m...more

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through a read and review group on Goodreads.
I couldn't breathe normally while reading this book. The pacing and buildup of suspense was done in such a way to make you question your own sanity. It was written so well with the language used in such a way as to awaken your fears and make you want to hide under the covers and/or leave your light on all night. I opted for hiding under my covers. ;)

The main narrative was engaging and pulled me rapidly though the story to the end. The opening and flashbacks were confusing at first, making sense later, as secrets are revealed. A forewarning to the squeamish, there are a number of intense and violent scenes and images that are integral to the storyline. (4 of 5 stars) Note: I received a free copy of the ebook to review.
I won this book on Library Thing and enjoyed it a lot. It's so much fun to discover 'new' talent. The writing was good, the characters interesting. There was one character in particular that I felt probably didn't really need to be there, unless he could have been given some more attention. I'm not sure if there was supposed to be a supernatural element going on as well, as that part wasn't completely 'fleshed' out (no pun intended). Perhaps it will be explored in the follow-up book. Dustin especially, this has the ring of a Lovecraftian theme; do you know if that's the case? At any rate, I did add to my TBR list.
Thanks, and Happy New Year!

This was certainly something different for me. It was one of those books that had me wanting to read more and waiting to find out what happens next. I very much enjoyed this book. The author, Mr. Russell really demonstrates alot of elements of horror with gore, mystery and suspense. Just enough gore to give you chills and enough mystery and suspense to keep you reading. Very well written, very well told story and and overall great read. I recommend this book for those who like good suspense and...more
