Can you imagine working for a God? Falling inlove with a God after the death of your first God? Or having the first God's daughter hunting you down? Well Mina did, she was working for Queen Takisis as a Knight and fought in battles for her. The day her queen died she went and buried her far away from everyone, that way no one could find her or distrub her grave. She punished herself day and night for her Queen's death. Until one day Chemosh, Lord of Death came down to earth and claimed Mina as h...more
Amber and Ashes is the first Dragonlance book I have read so far. The story follows Mina, whom I think is a bit of an idiot because of her unwavering faith to Chemosh, the Dragonlance setting's god of death. While the book kind of advertises itself to be about Mina and Mina only, Amber and Ashes is also largely about Rhys, a monk of Majere. The story is good, though the "Vampiric Cult" is not really all that vampirish, yes they are undead, but that does not make them vampires. They are more like...more
It has been some time since I last visited the world of Dragonlance. So, it was nice to return to the world of Krynn. Since it has been so long, I do not recall a lot of details from the series (yes, I've read all the pertinent novels leading to this series). Ms. Weis does a decent job of 'reminding' the reader of key details from the past novels. This story is a bit different in that the main character does not have a large part in the first book. It is almost as if Mina begins the story but is...more

like throwing me off a cliff! I LOVED it and ran out and got book 2 and 3 before i even finished so I wouldn't have to stop reading. AWESOME!
Of course, I loved the original Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends co-authored by this author, but does that mean I can't be impartial? It's my freaking review!

None of the beloved "classic" dragonlance characters (i.e. the one of the first two trilogies) are featured in this book. The only returning character is Mina, a mysterious woman that was first introduced in the War of Souls trilogy. The mysteries surrounding her nature and origin will be finally revealed in these books.
Amber and Ashes focuses on the latest attempt of Chemosh, the god of Death, to gain the control of the Dark pantheon with the help of Mina, and on a human monk and a kender mysti...more

Finally reading fiction again, and couldn't think of a better place to start than the Dragonlance saga!
What surprised me about this book is how easily I was able to pick up where I left off over 5 years ago when I read the last book in the series before this one. Weis does a great job of making sure the reader doesn't get lost in all the epic storylines of the past, giving you just enough flashbacks and background to keep you on point without turning into a "Previously on Dragonlance" soap opera...more

I'm not really one for fantasy series, but this one caught my eye. I really liked the world and the idea of the old gods returning. The narrative is separated into different pov's and that gave the story the variety it needed. I do have to warn readers that, if you haven't read anything in this universe, it can be confusing at the beginning. You're given a little backstory during the book, but you never know all of what really happened before this story begins.
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down and i actually fell in love with the bad guy, and that never happens. I managed to read this in a day and quickly started the second one. Chemosh is dark and his plot to rule the world is clever and astute. Mina is sexy and seductive and she is very human in the world of the gods, which shows how alluring she is.

Anyone who knows my taste in books, knows that I love the Dragonlance series. The main author being Tracey. However she sells out in this one. It seems she take the world of Dragonlance then drops it into a bad teenage girl's fantasy book of lust and desire. This seems like a complete sell out book and was a complete let down. For as big of a fan as I am of her work, I couldnt even finish it. Sometimes it is a bit challenging to get through small sections of her books, but this one just seemed t...more
Margaret Weiss works her story telling magic again. It has been many years since I last read any of the DragonLance novels, but this book has rekindled my interest. I will definitely look for Volumes Two and Three next time I am in a book store. The main character, Mina, is a little too piously evil for my taste, but there is a Kender who can talk to the dead, and a former monk of Majere (now a monk of Zeboim, the sea goddess), who has a fabulous kender-herding dog. I want to find out what happe...more
This is the first Dragon Lance book that I've read where its just Margaret Weis as the author. Usually she writes with Tracy Hickman. I didn't like it quite as much as the others. It was a bit skankier too. But in the end, it got better and left a lot of things up in the air so I'm giving volume 2 a shot.
Margaret Weis has done it again! This is a great addition to the Dragonlance series. Not as much about Mina as I would have liked but I can't be too greedy, the first part of the book was about her finding Chemosh. It was nice to see more of the gods and goddesses being brought into the story line instead of everything being about Paladine and Takhisis. I do have to say the ending caught me by surprise and I am more interested in reading about the first cataclysm now.

This is what happens when I need some brain candy for tech week, and have already picked clean most of the local library's sci-fi/fantasy. I read this. Wow. it was bad. To be fair, though, for a don't-think-about-work-or-fall-asleep-on-the-subway book, it was adaquate. And the sexy evil zombies were kinda funny. As is the fact that the "plot" is that Mina is such a special snowflake that all the dark gods want her to be their special friend. Yeah.

I loved the different point of view that it offered. Most of her books are co-written with Tracy Hickman and the main characters are normally males. The change of the usual, coupled with the introduction of the effects of the War of Souls on the gods offered a most unique story that I hope is carried on to the next books in the series.
ok ok.. its a dragonlance book, I thought I had gotten done secretly reading these after the age of thirteen. My roomie had this book and I ran out of things to read and darned if I didnt get hooked! I had to read the whole series. Guess I just outed my closet dorkdom.lol
But its a good adventure fantasy read.
