I have only read a couple of books from a handful of adult series, so I'm not sure how the world, the story, and the characters in Fire and Ice would compare to the many books out there. But comparing it to the ones I've already read, Fire and Ice is definitely up there! It was an enjoyable read for me, and I think readers who like fantasy with plenty of steamy romance should give it a shot.

But comparing it to the ones I've already read, Fire and Ice is definitely up there! It was an enjoyable read for me, and I think readers who like fantasy with plenty of steamy romance should give it a shot.

Before I started reading Fire and Ice, I was unsure how I would feel about it because there was hardly any ratings and reviews. However, now that I've read it, I'm surprised it doesn't have more readers, considering how popular indie books and books from small publishers are now nowadays. I know that finding editing mistakes here and there will turnoff some readers, but I thought the writing and story were good enough to make up for any minor mistakes in the book. The characters were likeable and funny, and the world was exciting and easy to visualize.

The focus of the story was the relationship between the main characters Sarica and Rosche. Rosche is a judge who bought all of Sarcia's father's debt, which means Rosche now owns all of his property including Sarica. Rosche has come across Sarica before and has wanted her ever since he first laid eyes on her, but Sarica doesn't realize Rosche's true intentions. She's under the impression that he only wants her for sex, especially since that's what her father's lenders planned to use her for before Rosche bought her, and to use her special gifts. It doesn't help that rumors have given Rosche a reputation as a cold and brutal person.

Because of all this, Sarica ends up making unfair assumptions about Rosche for most of the book. While it was frustrating at times, I can't entirely blame Sarica. Rosche doesn't really bother explaining the reasons behind his actions to her, and he's not great at communicating his feelings. Even when he thinks he's doing something nice for her, he doesn't consider how she would feel about it nor does he consider what she truly wants. Frustrating moments aside, I really liked Sarica (glad that she stood up for herself!) and Rosche (he was my favorite; love how caring he is). They were great characters, and their moments together were extremely sizzling.

The unique setting the author created was another aspect I enjoyed. The story is set on the planet Majien, one of five planets orbiting together. The planets are inhabited by different species, such as humans, Drakond, Risha, and a few others. (Sarica is actually half human, while Rosche is a Drakond.) There was enough history given about the people and technology so that readers would have a better understanding of the world, and it wasn't overwhelming. Not hard to follow at all. I thought the sci-fi elements were well done.

Fire and Ice was just very easy for me to get hooked into. It had plenty of tension and surprises and should satisfy those interested in a smoking, adventurous read. I can't help but to recommend it! It has even made me really curious about the rest of the books in this series and other books by Carrie Olguin. Hopefully they're as good as Fire and Ice!

Do you ever read a book in 24 hours, give up on sleep and don't care that you are sooooo grumpy because you have to FINISH THIS BOOK!!! Well, that is what Fire and Ice was for me. Yes, I finished it in 24 hours. Yes, I gave up on sleep, staying up 24 hours just to finish it. Do I want to re-read it later? HECK YEAH! Do I want to read more about the Five Worlds? Definitely. Kiki and I often read the same books, though at different times, and discuss them at great lengths after. On very rare occasions we find a book that we must read together. This book was one of those exceptions. When I first started Fire and Ice I was intrigued, but somewhat lost. I quickly called up Kiki and after a brief review of where I stood in the book she was hooked. She quickly caught up with me and we were off to the races. Through laughter, frustration, and some immense OMG heat, we blew up our phones with text messages. We were so caught up after page 30 there was no way we were putting this book down. That alone earns this book the 5 stars, but oh dear readers, there was so much more.

Carrie Olguin takes you to Majien, one of the Five Worlds after the radiation storms. The story seems to start off in the middle. You are at the Majien Advanced Learning Academy awaiting the proposal of Noble Judge Rosche to Sarica, the Professor's daughter. Professor Stockley needs funding for an exploration that Rosche is willing to offer with a catch, his daughter's hand. The Professor, who is going on the expedition with or without Rosche's funding, leaves the decision up to Sarica. You do not know the ins and outs of what went on with Rosche and the Professor at this point, and neither does Sarica. That's why she harshly refutes him before he even gets the proposal out. The next thing we know Sarica's father has failed in his expedition and died. She has been thrown in debtors prison awaiting an auction that will sell her off to the highest bidder. In comes Rosche again to save the day, or so he thinks, by paying off her debts and taking her on as a "servant". He knows this deal comes in a distant second to his ultimate goal, Sarica becoming his wife.

Sarica, who is a very intelligent scholar that dreams of running free, exploring the Five Worlds, can't believe she is in this dire situation. She just got out from under the tight control of her over-protective father to fall into the hands, of what she feels, is a crude, cold-hearted judge that only wants to use her as a sex slave. What Sarica does not know is that Rosche also has an Anom gift, one that is the complete opposite of her Din cold generation. Rosche has the gift of Drakond fire. What she also does not know is that Rosche desperately needs her because only her gift can control the heat within him, and he will do anything to possess her, forever. This, my friends, is where the fun begins!

Fire and Ice, with its large cast of characters, has many twists and turns that make it much more than a love story. There is an extensive subplot that goes on in this series, and Kiki and I both felt this first book was just the tip of the iceberg in letting you know what is really going on in the Five Worlds. There is so much more that Olguin could have said, and so many different ways she can take the next book. Kiki and I are completely invested in the series and can't wait for the next installment. I do have to give one warning. This is 100% an adult book. There are some very racy scenes that can make even the most veteran of readers blush. But please don't let that stop you. We encourage you to pick up this book, and then dare you to try and put it down!

I give the author high marks for creativity in the world she takes her reader to, though I wish she would have described it more up front. However, she does describe enough throughout the book for you to get a good sense of the world by the end. There are many interesting species, and I imagine we will learn more about them in her other books (I’m currently reading “Soul Swap” on Kindle and enjoying both the world and the story). It was a little difficult to get into the book at first because of the lack of setting description. Once I got about 30 or 40 pages into the book, I was very interested and didn’t want to put it down. Above all, I really cared about the characters and what happened to them, and that is a must for me to continue with any book.

The heroine Sarica is half-human and half-Din (an underwater species). She has a special gift that allows her radiate cold (ice) in order to protect herself. She has aspirations to be a scholar, like her father. When her father dies on an expedition to find the mythical Almona City, she inherits his debts, which are bought up by the commanding Lord Rosche, a Drakond (a desert species). Rosche is interested in Sarica because he has a gift as well--that of fire--and he thinks Sarica can help him control it. In the beginning it felt like the typical formulaic romance (idealistic woman; brooding, controlling man), but it took some unexpected turns, which was great because I really thought it was going to go exactly where most romances with these types of characters go, and it went somewhere else.

The main downside for me was that there were a lot of copy editing errors in the book, which was very distracting to me as a reader. I expect to find a few in every book I read, but this book had a lot more than you usually find. Examples of errors I found include the use of the wrong homonym, missing small words such as “to” and “the,” the wrong form of a verb, “within” where “with” was meant, and double words such as “him her” and “will may.” Having done a good deal of writing myself (English major with a writing concentration), I understand that these errors are easy for an author to miss prior to the copy editing process (because having re-worked it so often, you start to see what you meant instead of what is on the page), but as this book did have an editor, I would have expected more of them to be caught by the editor prior to printing.

Shelves: erotica, sci-fi

This was certainly a steamy paranormal erotica, not recommended for anyone under 18. Sarica has the ability of cold and Rosche has the gift of heat and as their gifts battle so does their relationship. This is a book full of not only erotic action but a story set in other worlds as two people learn to give and take in love. Interesting read mixing different styles.
The story takes place in te future but judging frim their technology you can t really say they are very developped.
I enjoyed the various races Human, Din, Drakond.... It made interactions between the characters miee complicated.
Finally, ai can say that I enjoy following the telationship between Sarica and Rosche. It evolved so much from their encounter to the end, it was worrh following and very hot. However, I was not addicted to this book and I am not...more

As I read the story Rosche and Sarica there were many times when I grew frustrated with the characters talking in their heads. I also grew impatient w/Sarica's treatment of Rosche. She seemed a bit wishy-washy when it came to how she talked to him, treated him and her constant need to express why she didn't want to like him.

I got this as a Goodreads giveaway, and it took me awhile to read it. I am so glad I decided to pick it up. I love a good fantasy book, and this did not disappoint. The characters and setting are complex, but it is laid out well. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was, and I am looking into buying another book from this series!
