John Williamson left the farm when he was a boy and ran away to sea. A chance meeting in a tavern takes him from England on a voyage halfway across the world in search of adventure with the charismatic James Brooke.

The narrator tells of his time on James Brooke’s ship and what he did after he left Mr. Brooke’s employ until he returned to his employ again in Tom Williams’ VOYAGE EAST. The narrator tells of the problems that arose when Mr. Brooke did not have the same goals in mind as his partners. He also tells of what he learned as he worked different ships in and around Singapore, Malay, and Borneo.

Okay I feel a little bit cheated because this is the beginning of a story and not a complete short story - but since that was an oversight on my behalf I'm not retracting a star. Great writing and I loooove this historical setting. I might just go and read the rest of the book ^.^

This told the story of James Brooke of Sarawak, seen through the eyes of his (fictional) lover, John Williamson. One thing led to another and I found myself writing another novel, following John Williamson's adventures after he left Borneo. The r ...more
