An intriguing piece of metafiction, Doctor 13: Architecture & Mortality restores some of the fun in the DC universe. Using Doctor Thirteen, the world's foremost skeptic who denies that anything supernatural or unexplainable exists, as the centerpiece of a quasi-team of truly forgotten and often forgettable DC characters, Brian Azzarello scripts a surprisingly amusing and insightful treatise into the world of contemporary comics. Genius Jones (created by Alfred Bester!), I...Vampire, ...more

It's hard even to see this as from the same author of 100 Bullets, which, admittedly, I've only read the first book of. That's so gritty and straightforward, and this is so incredibly light and playful and goofy, crammed with jokes that include truly awful puns and plenty of meta-comics humor. I don't know why I'm holding back from giving it five stars, really, except that it's not long enough. I expected to be disappointed after reading the copy on the back, which promises a Nazi gorilla...more

An interesting meta-critique of the DC Comics universe. A bunch of excessively underused and uninterested characters (woo, Infectious Lass!) band together to fight their extinction in the wake of DC's Infinite Crisis. The Crisis isn't named, but these heroes do go up against the four Architects of the Crisis and the subsequent 52 ( Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, and <...more

Wow. It's hard to believe that this book actually got published. The story pulls just enough punches to avoid litigation for libel. Superficially, it's just a whimsical adventure story involving a lot of obscure characters from DC Comics. The real story, however, lies in the hardly-veiled commentary on the pointless, destructive "reinventing" of old characters and stories which rapidly devolves into soulless, pandering quest for cash. And whether in the form of DC's now-numerous b...more

A very funny graphic novel using some lesser known DC characters. The humor is good, and I'd have given it four stars, but the over use of dialects gets annoying. I also enjoyed the criticism of the comic industry and the characters and ideas it leaves in the dust. Also, the self aware comic character has been done already (e.g. Animal Man).

BRILLIANT! This volume collects the Dr Thirteen back-up stories that were printed with the 2006 Tales of the Unexpected series. Unbelievably clever, hilarious and oddly poignant--a very meta take on how the DC universe handles unpopular and forgotten characters.

A must read. Originally a backup in DC's Tales of the Unexpected miniseries, Dr. 13 is a gleeful romp through the back alleyways of the DC Universe. At some point, this type of metafiction navel gazing will be completely played out, but not yet.

Funny and heartwarming. Not only did the story remind me why I love comics, but it was an interesting commentary on modern superhero comics as well. Hoping for a sequel someday.

Excellent trade collection featuring minor DC characters (some would say rejects) in their quest to find out what the heck is going on.

I would love to give this book 5 stars but it's so think in DCU continuity that I can't.

A great little tale that uses comics to expound about comics with gorgeous, fluid artwork. Well done by all involved.
