I first noticed this book several weeks ago at the library. I read the synopsis. To paraphrase: A lonely, crippled woman is raped, and impregnated, in her own home. The greenhouse becomes her only sanctuary and the focal point of the novel. I placed it back on the shelf. I didn't want to read a rape narrative. But...I kept thinking about it. I couldn't remember the title or author, but I just had to find it again. And finally I did.

What an absolutely charming and original novella this turned out to be. The central protagonist transpires to be the greenhouse itself, who ("which"?) relates it's history with it's owners. It's an extremely novel approach, very poetic and sad in content, and one which is over all too quickly. The human characters pale into insignificance alongside this majestic being.

I suspect that Hillmore is a talent we will be hearing much about in time to come. I genuinely can't recommend this highly enoug

What a strange little book! The Greenhouse sits on a grassy bank, watching the movements of the people of the house. Crippled Vanessa eventually ends up alone, her parents dead, her brother married, and she develops an obsession with the Greenhouse, spending all her time there. She decides to grow grapes, but on the day she plants them, her life is changed forever. Written from the perspective of the Greenhouse, it's a gently moving tale, the writing is beautiful and poetically descriptive. The ...more
