The Talking Earth
"Billie Wind is disciplined for doubting the beliefs of her Seminole tribe. She chooses her punishment--to journey into the Florida Everglades until she hears the animal gods who talk. . . . The conservation message grows naturally out of the excitement of the survival adventure story".--The New York Times.

Overall, I enjoyed Jean Craighead George's The Talking Earth. The best way to describe the plot is to quote a bit from the jacket:
Billie Wind lives with her Seminole tribe. She follows their customs, but the dangers of pollution and nuclear war she's learned about in school seem much more real to her. How can she believe the Seminole legends about talking animals and earth spirits? She wants answers, not legends.
"You are a doubter," say the men of the Semino ...more

Billie Wind is a young girl who is a member of the Seminole Indian Tribe of Florida. She questions the traditional beliefs of her people. The elders of her tribe find out & ask her to come up with a punishment for herself. She says they should send her out into the Everglades until she understands how the animals talk to humans and until she believes that the little men or earth spirits do exist. The elders agree that that is good punishment for a "doubter". What was meant to be a ...more
This is a wonderful tale of a Native American (Seminole) girl on a quest for life's answers. She is concerned about pollution and nuclear war and must listen to mother nature's characters.
One of my favorite books as a child. I read this countless times!

great book about connecting with earth
I've read this book many times before. I'm currently reading it to one of my 4th grade classes. It is the perfect novel to read with an ecosystems unit. It covers fire ecology, predator/prey relationships, symbiosis, natural history, human impact on the environment and weather. It is absolutely one of my favorite books.

One of several great books that I will be using in my new class on Feminism, Gender, and Popular Culture. I want my students to see that it is possible to educate AND entertain, and that not all Young Adult literature consists of vampires stalking naive, risk-obsessed females.
I read this book in 3rd or 4th grade, and it remains, to this day, once of the best books I've ever read. I forgot its title, and it took me years to track down. Thank god I know some good librarians!
I learned a lot about the meaning of Earth.
A little preachy, but fun nonetheless.
