I find Emily Croom's books to be helpful for beginners, but there's also great information for those that have been researching their families for years. I always especially like the case studies. This extends the information in Unpuzzling your past.

Croom has written an excellent reference book beneficial to both the beginning researcher and an experienced researcher. She thoroughly discusses types of records, record groups and their locations, and research strategies, offering small case studies as examples. Her book will not become dated as do so many computer based research books.

Lots of good information, but outdated on the many records that are online now, not just on microfilm.
