The depth of these simple poems seriously blew me away. The book jacket mentions that the poems bring back camping memories, and for me that’s exactly what they did. The simplicity of the poems and the rich pictures took me back down memory lane to the days of my family’s own camping experiences. There were only a few poems that did not reflect experiences that I had as a child. The poems have a wonderful musical quality to them.

I could see an elementary teacher using this to introduce More...

Toasting Marshmallows is a collection of camping poems by Kristine O’Connell George. The many adventure of camping are described in the book such as pitching the tent, getting dressed in the sleeping bag, fishing, discovering an old cabin, and simply taking in the scenery. I enjoyed this collection of poems as is took me back to the days of camping with my family. I think young students who have also experienced camping would relate to the many adventures included in the collection. It would als More...

This was a great book about camping poems. Since I used to go camping a lot when I was younger I can identify with some of the character’s experiences. When I began reading this book I automatically assumed the voice was from a male character, then when I got to page nine the illustrations and the text proved that the voice was from the older sister. Since poems can be difficult for children to understand I thought having one voice for the entire book made it easier. The illustrations also h More...

I did not particulary like this book, especially for younger children. However, if I did read this to my students, I would say second or third grade would be an appropriate age level. The books had nice pictures that would spark a child's interest, but I thought that some of the context was in a confusing format. For a child who is new to reading or learnig how to read I think that this book would be to confusing because the sentences were all over the place and not exactly from left to right More...

25 months - Borrowed this one right before going camping... thinking this would be a fun one to read before hand. O was not very into poetry after looking at a couple others so I read through this one looking for a few fun ones that I thought she would like. Most the poems start off interesting but seem to loose it by the end. I ended up not reading any of them to her. :(

These poems were more esoteric than we are reading right now. It had long, non-rhyming poems that just didn't hold their interest yet.

I loved these poems; perfect for kids & even for middle school. Simple enough to break down stereotypes that poetry is too difficult to write or understand, complex enough to delight & provide examples for studying poetic elements & devices, these poems include all aspects of the camping experience. I'm definitely buying a copy for home and school.

As a hiking and camping family reading this book of poems together brought back wonderful memories of summer. Our tent, the woods, the animals, the sky. A celebration of family togetherness in the great outdoors

Anyone who has ever expereinced "the great outdoors" as a kid will adore this book. The last poem, where the girl can still smell the campfire in her clothes, always brings tears to my eyes.

I liked the poems. It brought a family from the beginning of a campout until they went home--so it really had a story within the poems.
