On the eve of her graduation from college, Marshall Sullivan celebrates her success and blissfully ignores the weight of her future: bills, no job and no clue how to use her B.A. in English. In the midst of the celebrations, Marshall has the first of several hardheaded run-ins with Gabriel Somers. Marshall's inability to turn off her klutz switch leads to a job as the only...more

I am just starting the fall section and really like it so far. I like the main character, Marshall. She reminds me alot of myself. I also like her friend Marva who she stops in to see from time to time and my favorit quote from the character Marva so far is "The more you are able to be alone, the more you love yourself."

I recommend this book for people who like to read about young women who are trying to find direction and meaning in their lives.

The main thing I liked about this book is the way it gives a positive look at Buffalo and all the city has to offer. (The city has: pride, culture, sports, food, art, etc.) I did not like the main character at all in the first chapter. She seemed very loose (into very casual sex) and self centered. As the book moved on she seemed more stable and I began to like the cha...more

As I read this first novel by Amy Strychasz, it felt as if the character development seamlessly and progressively unfolded from page to page. Through the use of dialogue and description, Ms. Strychasz effectively unveiled the developing maturity of the main character, Marshall. Moreover, the relationships portrayed were in themselves revelatory, defining more clearly Marshall's search for self-actualization. I loved Marva, who in all her uniqueness, honesty, and soul-searching, gathered uncertai...more

I enjoyed the characters on so many levels. There are many different character connections found in this book and they were written so in-depth that you felt them all. It was hard to end the book and leave them. The best way to describe Marshal is to talk about a scene from the book, She is in full feminine regal and she is drinking a beer. She is just that kind of gal. Gabriel is ever the gentlemen and though there wasn’t any imperfections to the leading man like I normally like to see, the aut...more

It is a great read! I really felt connected with the characters, and the imagery and descriptions in Amy's writing allowed me to feel a part of the story. She truly captured the tone of the Buffalo area and the family spirit that we have here. I became attached to the characters and found myself laughing and crying as I turned the pages. I am hoping for a sequel so that I can find out what happens to Marshall and her friends. It is definitely a book to pack in your beach bag or carry-on. You won...more

Buffalo Gals was an entertaining and enjoyable read. With engaging dialogue and descriptive passages, the characters came alive on the page. Throw in a likable, job-seeking college graduate who works hard and sometimes parties harder, a best friend in similar circumstances, an elderly mentor, and assorted family members and co-workers, add the talented writing of Amy Strychasz, and you have the ingredients for a great way to while away an afternoon or two. I received this book free through Goodr...more

One thing I love about this book is the way it shines a beautiful light on Buffalo. This book highlights all of the awesome options the city has- food, art, culture, sports, enough to make any Buffalonian proud. I love how the book is sectioned, like collections around the main character's growth. I somewhat liked the main character, and other times I wanted to kick her.

I absolutely hated the choice the main character made in the end. I really had a hard time with the ending. I don't read fictio...more

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It took me all of two days to finish it. As a Buffalonian, I appreciated the mention of local landmarks and events. However, that was not what made the book enjoyable for me. The characters were very well developed. I felt as though I could see my past self in Marshall Sullivan. Ms. Strychasz did a wonderful job of making the plotline and characters relatable and likeable. I am looking forward to a sequel to see what happens to our heroine.

Great beach read!! Highly Recommend. Beautifully written book that truly captures that period of self-discovery after you graduate from college. The characters are well drawn and interesting. This is not my typical genre but I was quickly drawn into the book and did not put it down until I finished it. It is a quick read with good emotional punch. I found myself in tears at the end.

I really enjoyed this book. I graduated from college last year with an English degree (just one thing Marshall and I have in common), and I really felt like I could relate to her. Everyone can relate to the anxiety of not knowing what you want to do in life and if you are really happy with what you have. The book was fun because it got me to think without being too heavy.

A light, almost chick lit novel covering the year after college graduation of the young woman protagonist. It was a quick and pleasant read, and I enjoyed the characters. But the writing, and especially the dialogue, really left room for improvement.

I was a little taken back by this book, at two hundred and thirty-nine pages, I wasn’t expecting such a thought provoking heartwarming story. I maybe shouldn’t have been surprised as the plot leans towards an almost coming of age theme with a secondary plot of romance. It’s immediately apparent from the beginning that the author poured her heart, soul, passion, blood, and sweat into this book and it completely shows. You can literally s...more

I read this book over time rather than straight through as I was interrupted by other things, but despite this it was a book I enjoyed. I found myself following Marshall around like a secret voyeur, watching and listening to what was going on in her life. I won’t say that this is a rite of passage story, but it does deal with the choices Marshall has to deal with in her life at this changing time. Her relationships are at the heart of the story, and all the characters are nicely described and ar...more

This book was a great fast read. I instantly fell in love with all of the characters. The ending was left open for continuation and I hope Amy continues Marshalls story.
