Nik's a douche. Deluded, stupid, hostile little douche.
Making him the lead is probably a mistake, but surely was loads of fun to write—the lengths to which he goes in order to ruin his own happiness are astonishing.
Sadly, it seems only Julia Roberts can play a neurotic fetchingly, without making you want to end her with a hatchet.

4.5 stars from me for this one, another really good, hot read from Anne Tenino, and FREE.
This was the story of Nik Larson, an snarky yet sensitive Indian adoptee and Jurgen Dammerung, a mountain of a motorcycle cop
who is blond, butch and awesome!! They were sooo hot together
!!
I liked that it also featured Sam from 'Too Stupid to Live' as Nik's best friend, and of course, as anyone who has read TSTL will know, Nik and Sam are very close, and tell each other everything, or mostly everything!!

3+ stars. Pretty smokin' sexytimes with a dominant alpha cop as the top.
This one was a little bit of a removed read for me, though. I just couldn't get into Nik and his narrative voice, which was too full of histrionics and insecurities for my taste. He seemed too immature, honestly, and I didn't really see what would have made Jurgen fall in love with him. Also, vice versa, Jurgen was such a strong-and-silent presence that I didn't see what Nik fell in love with, either. Don't get me wrong - I...more

Whitetail Rock by Anne Tenino (26,600 words) is a well-written character-driven piece that shows the progression of a quirky, and often very funny, romance. The drama is mostly internal, centering on the hero’s insecurities rather than on external problems. But his internal obstacles are formidable. Nik is a personable and successful young man who lacks any of the serious problems you might expect would cause internal obstacles to a relationship, such as addiction or mental illness. Yet, he sabo...more
After I started reading 'Too Stupid to Live' I found out that a few key characters (well actually most of the characters) were first introduced in the two novellas that make up the 'Whitetail Rock' series. Once I found that out, I actually started 'Whitetail Rock' before I even finished 'Too Stupid to Live.' It wasn't because I wasn't enjoying getting to know Ian and Sam, it was more because I wanted to see what I was missing and take the opportunity to get to know Nik and Jurgen better. I'm so...more

Ok, it is rare that I feel sappy while reading a book, but this one turned me to total mush. Damn it was too good and had me awww-ing and aaahhh-ing all the time.
This Novelette was written for the Don’t Read in the Closet Event on Goodreads and again I’m truly impressed with the quality of the authors in there.

I read a different book by this author and enjoyed it so I thought that I would give this one a try too. It's a toss up right now which book I enjoyed more.
Nik is an adopted kid of Indian descent. He is uncomfortable being the token Indian and gay guy from his small hometown so he gets defensive and sensitive whenever he thinks someone is pushing those buttons. So when motorcycle cop Jurgen pulls into the lot of his parents' store while he is there visiting he gives the big interested cop the br...more

So here's the thing, I hate reading m/f romance novels. Nine times out of ten the leading lady (or I usually refer to them as the 'simpering mess') is damaged emotionally, winey, brick wall building, self doubting with a stick up her ass while pleading "surely he couldn't be interested in little-old-me". Then they try to fight being rescued by a great big hunk of spunk who'll tell them what they should wear, when to leave the house or better yet "not to bother thinken' 'bout that stuff no more s...more
I was disappointed when I realized this was over 20K words because I wanted to give it an A rating at BER. I hadn't had one in so long. Nik is a English postgraduate with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He grew up in a white town, the son of a white couple adopted form India. The only brown kid in town and later, the only gay kid which some were quick to take advantage of. He's home for a visit when he sees uber-alpha state trooper Jurgen. When he flirts, to his surprise Jurgen makes a move whi...more
I absolutely loved the coupling of Nik, slightly insecure over his Indian descent when living at home in small Whitetail Rock, and Jurgen, the new motorcycle cop in town. Nik has a great attitude and arrogance about him that would normally come off a bit rough but Tenino pulls it off by adding a sense of humor to Nik that is a bit quirky and off-the-wall. Jurgen is the sensible one, always able to bring Nik to his knees when he least expects it.

Oh, I did love this book. Reminded me of when I lived overseas, and the way you're just constantly looking out for and getting hung up on people looking at you differently.
As such, I adored and empathised with Nic. He had that instinctive defensiveness that comes too easy after being constantly signalled out, and it led him to misjudge and act a way that could have had him even more signalled out. He was flawed in prejudging Jurgen, and I loved him for it because I could understand why. I've don...more

I'm not usually one to read romance, whether heterosexual or homosexual, but a friend recommended that I give this novella a go (thanks Matt!). The story is about how a twenty-seven-year-old postgraduate teaching fellow (Nik) meets a thirty-one-year-old motorcycle cop (Jurgen) and how their relationship evolves from their mutual lust at first sight. After a sexual encounter, these two young men come to meet up more often to have wild sex and gradually develop romantic feelings for each other - o...more

Shirley from Creative Deeds told me about these two novellas available for free on Anne Tenino's blog. They tell the story of how Nik and Jurgen get together...and I loved these two guys in Too Stupid to Live...so I immediately grabbed them up to read. This is one of those times where FREE does NOT mean bad...Both of these novellas were wonderful.

This story is a short read, and truthfully, I couldn't seem to stay focused on it at all. In other words, I was easily distracted. It was well written, and the characters are interesting, and I can personally relate to Nik, but for me, the story was still missing something. Nik, was born in India and therefore a person of color, and his parents are white; so there was trouble for him when he was younger. Being a "non-white" person in an almost "all-white" town leads to feelings of low self-estee...more
Almost a close door romance, a lot of the story happens just between the couple. I liked that, okay, I just gave the short story a 5 stars, I can say I loved the structure of it and not be lying. The story is about Nik and Jurgen... Nik is a teacher (that isn't that important in the story) and Jurgen is a motorcycle cop (very important) who just meet and have an instant sexual connection... but it takes time before something else develops. I'm not even sure why I love this... I didn't find the s...more
4.5 stars. The main character's lack of self-esteem and chip on his shoulder about his race was a little taxing but I just loved this story. It was well written, tight and smooth. The sex scenes were varied and very hot. The ending was so sweet I teared up a little.

I will give you 10 reasons to read this book:

2) Bathroom counter sex.
3) Office desk sex.
4) Post-testing bareback sex.
5) Leather motorcycle chaps (and matching gloves).
6) Handcuffs.
7) Sam.
8) Nik's snarkiness.
9) Jurgen. *SWOOOOOOOOON*
10) It's FREE. WHAT?!
Bonus reason: Ash would approve of Nik's reaction to being called "baby." *snicker*

This was a quick, sexy, fun novella by Anne Tenino, who I've been meaning to read more of for some time. I liked that it explored the idea of race in the gay culture (albeit in a very passing manor in the context of a romance novel). I also have a mild sub-fetish with cops or law enforcement age...more

After reading this, I definitely like The Fix more. I didn't realize there was a book before The Fix, so the story just seemed like it started in an odd place, and Jurgen seemed a bit crazy and needy. I love Jurgen and Nik, and I especially loved the part where Nik admitted he loves Jurgen, but Jurgen doesn't love him, and when Jurgen asked him how he knew, and Nik said because you didn't tell me, and Jurgen threw that back at him and said why do I have to say it first? That made me laugh. Nik s...more

Love this kind of writing, and the inner thoughts were so believable. Great to see the way she handled the growing up always aware you were different in a white society. Where colour of skin matters. The father being disabled, but that was just a fact of life. So many stereotypes introduced but dealt with. Intelligent, hot writing at its best.

Re-read
I needed to re-read before I read the sequel. I think I actually enjoyed the characters a little more with the second read. I guess with the short story I blew through it so quick I didn't really get a chance to know Nik and Jurgen. This time through I was already more familiar with them, so I had the chance to really "see" them, and find that I like Jurgen much more than I originally thought. I guess this explains why I like to re-read my stories.

A good, sexy, nicely put together, interracial short read. I can't believe it was free, I would have gladly paid for this book.
Jurgen, mmmm, what a hunk, so patient, understanding and sexy as all get out.
Nik, what a whinger but Jurgen wanted him so, if he makes him happy, I'll live with it. I'll give Nik one thing, he does have good taste in men - Jurgen. Oh, and in his love of chaps, sexy men in chaps (must shut up now).

Lava-lava burning hot, always sexy, often laugh out loud funny--This book is everything a good romance should be. I laughed with Nik, got turned on with him at Jurgen's high handed sexy big animal on the prowl stalking of him. Damn. Give me an Anne Tenino book any day--it's sure to make my mood a good one. Witty, tightly written...if Whitetail Rock was a drink it would be a Slow-Hard-Thorough-Screw-Against-The-Wall. :) I'm so satisfied I may need a ciggie.

“He made me pick a safe word." Nik peeked between his fingers. Sam's mouth was hanging open.
"Oh." Sam's voice was a whisper. More of the throat clearing. "What did you pick?"
Not the question he'd been expecting. Nik looked up at Sam from under his hand.
"Lemonade."
"Lemonade?" Nik nodded. "Do you like lemonade?"
"Does it matter? Yes, I like lemonade."
"Shouldn't you have picked something you didn't like, to make sure there were no, um, inadvertent exclamations at an important moment?"
He dropped his hand and stared at Sam. "Who screams out 'lemonade' in the middle of sex?"
Sam blushed. Nik was momentarily grateful for his dark skin. "You'd be surprised," Sam mumbled.”
