In a few simple lines of verse on each spread, fathers and mothers are ready to put their youngsters to bed. But in this book, the youngsters are a wide variety of dinosaurs. And how do dinosaurs say good night?

Filled with wonderful detail and humor, children and their parents will love the expressions and antics of the eleven different dinosaur children depicted here, and

Dinosaurs are extinct 'cause they went to sleep and never woke up. Night owls are still around.
I read this in line at the supermarket (beats tabloids any day. Unless Elvis does decide to really come back). It's cute and funny. Love dinosaurs. (I still love Dr. Seuss more.)
This reminds me of the time when I was a kid and the grandparents gave me an ironic nightgown with a dinosaur on it who didn't wanna go to bed. I'd point to it as my reason/explanation for not going to bed. Dinosaurs don't slee...more

How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? is a picture book that ultimately challenges young children to say goodnight to their parents without the drama and emotion that is often associated with bedtime.
Through repetition and rhyme, this concept book describes inappropriate bedtime responses by a variety of dinosaur species. They include stomping their feet, asking for a piggy back ride, throwing their teddy bears and roaring when mother or father says it is time to say goodnight.

I suppose it is not surprising how many children's books are illustrated in a simplistic, spare, or at best cartoonish fashion. And that's fine, of course: art doesn't have to be complicated to be good. What surprises me is how many children's books - even children's books bearing impressive looking award seals - have illustrations that might kindly be described as abstract, but would more likely described as "ugly" by the average 6-year-old. The beautiful "Carl" series (example: You're A Good D...more

How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Mark Teague is a manners book about bedtime behavior which is part of a successful collaborative author - illustrator series.

The text has great rhymes. The font is large, good for reading aloud or for beginning/intermediate readers. Though the dinosaurs are not named in the text, the illustrations show their names in each bedroom.

The illustrations are fantastic and funny. The dinosaurs show tons of expression whether they are shown m...more

This book would be a great tool to introduce a dinosaur unit. The teacher could have the students look through the book and see how many dinosaurs they can name. The teacher can also have the children look for the names of the dinosaurs on different pages.
For older kids, the teacher could have the students study the names in the book, to help them build their vocabulary, and maybe do a spelling test on the names. (A spelling test should be done for grades 5 or 6).
The teacher could use the boo...more

“How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?” is a cute bedtime book by Jane Yolen along with illustrations by Mark Teague and it is about how dinosaurs try to say goodnight to their parents. “How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?” is a cute story that many children would enjoy reading during bedtime.

Jane Yolen makes this story extremely cute as she makes the dinosaurs in this book act like real children and I love the way that Jane Yolen made the dinosaurs childish and loving at the same time towards their paren...more

I did not expect to like this book very much. Sometimes I love being wrong. This book had me laughing from first page to last.

Jane Yolen is not only a prolific writer; she’s incredibly eclectic. The story rhyme is terrific.

The illustrations are outstanding and they’re hilarious. The pictures show a variety of large dinosaurs in human size bedrooms, with a variety of human size human mothers and fathers, and dog size family dogs, and human child size toys and beds and teddy bears. They’re so, so...more

Day at Central Park...played baseball with a good older boy, found a giant mud puddle, played in water features at children's play to get it all cleaned up. Came home on the promise of a tube type of yogurt that I found in Max's fridge. It was called Tuberz or something like that. Blueberry yogurt in a tube. He loved it. But then I found out that it is crap:

Ten sleepy dinosaurs get ready for bed in this celebration of funny, endearing, and naughty bedtime behavior. Young children will laugh out loud as they recognize themselves in this larger than life silliness. The illustrations of the dinosaurs are my favorite part of this book. The brightly done illustrations, have lots of detail and are very cute. The rhyme is just enough to make the read aloud fun and keeps the reader wondering what type of dinosaur is going to be shown next, as well as what...more

How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight is a funny picture book with vivid pictures about dinosaurs at bedtime. These dinosaurs ironically have human parents and demonstrate poor bedtime behavior, followed by proper bedtime behavior. These are huge dinosaurs in kid-sized bedrooms and performing child-like behaviors. I think that this book is engaging book for young children that can be us...more

I agree with other reviewers that this story is an entertaining "appropriate bedtime behavior" book. There wasn't anything in here that wasn't likable. But the kids that I read this to weren't terribly impressed.

My niece liked it just fine, I suppose, although I don't know if she actually heard it. She was intent on finding the name of the dinosaur hidden on every page, so I really don't think her primary aim was to hear the story.

My nephew just didn't tune in, which really surprised me. He lik...more

Summary: Ponder the different ways a dinosaur can say goodnight, from slamming his tail and pouting to giving a big hug and kiss.

Good book for toddler and Preschool story class. One of J's favorite's right now (4 years old).

First half of the book show poor behavior before bed while the second half shows good behavior before bed. Funny book! In rhyme.

How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear...more

Using Dinosaurs, Yolen and Teague have created a lovely bedtime story for the youngest reader. The book captures their imagination and attention with familiar bedtime antics. A motivational piece for those children who have trouble going to bed, as well as a wonderful tool for their parents. The illustrations make this a wonderful read aloud. Full spread paintings of Dinosaurs preparing for bed in bright and colorful detail, bring familiarity and imagination together, keep...more

This is a rhyming story portraying the different dinosaurs and their naughty behaviors before bedtime. The illustrations are very symmetrical to the text, but add a humorous interpretation to the text (but maybe that is just because the dinosaur situation is silly). There are several different dinosaurs depicted in the illustrations, and you know they are from different families because they all have different parents. The end pages of the book are tiled with the different dinosaurs laying on th...more

This is such a great book for toddlers and preschoolers. I would classify this book as science fiction because it involves dinosaurs. All young readers love books about dinosaurs. They are excited about them some reason. This book shows different dinosaurs acting out when it is time to go to sleep. But then the book shows that this in not the right way to behave. There is a great lesson with this story which is great for preschoolers. The illustrations in this book are very details and realistic....more

This book would appeal to most young readers for one reason: dinosaurs. For some reason, most children find dinosaurs fun and exciting. The illustrations in this book are full bleed with simple black text overlayed. The images are realistic, but painted in a slightly cartoonish manner. Each page portrays a different type of dinosaur, and the name of each dinosaur is placed strategically in the illustration. In addition to the pleasing illustrations, the story is engaging and is written in a rhym...more

This story just begs to be played with. Enormous, playful dinosaurs demand the works as their parents try to put them to bed. How does a dinosaur act when Papa comes in to say it's bedtime? "Does he slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about?" Young children can tell the whole story from Teague's expressive paintings, and that's part of the charm of why this works so well with preschoolers. They can take part in this book on their own terms, reading it in their own way. It al...more

The text was fun, nothing spectacular (maybe I was expecting more by the children's book goddess that is Jane Yolen) but the rhyme is great for those bed-time read alouds. And the story is a very cute and amusing concept. I think the illustrations really brought it to life. The expressions on the dinosaur's faces are SO funny, and the parents, gosh, I bet every mom and dad has made one of those faces at bedtime, haha! I thought it was really clever how the actual name of each dinosaur was writte...more

Jane Yolen's "Dinosaur" series is one of the best series of childrens' books ever printed. My twin daughters adore them, but this volume plays a special role in our household. Since the girls were 18 months old, they are now 20 months, we have been reading this book to them when we tuck them into bed. As I read the book, my daughters act out various the various activities displayed and when the book hits its inevitable "no, dinosaur's don't" passage, my girls answer along with the book.

This whole series of books is amazingly wonderful! Gorgeous illustrations and silly lines--it's a hit with the whole family. My kids love to have Daddy read these to them; and the boys especially love it as they're going through that inevitable little-boys-and-dinosaurs stage. The books are written so that the dinosaurs are kids, trying to fit in a kid-sized bed or chair, doing things that every parent will recognize in their kids, and every kid will recognize in their sibs/friends/cousins (but...more

This was a very cute, yet humorous book to read. I enjoyed it very much! This book continuously asks the reader, what would a dinosaur do before going to bed? In the beginning the book shows the dinosaurs misbehaving before going to bed. But, at the end the dinosaurs end up being the nicest, most well-behaved dinosaurs. They kiss their mom goodnight, and turn off the lights. I read this book to the kindergarten class I read aloud to and the children enjoyed the book very much. They really graspe...more

This is a great bedtime book! Kids love seeing and hearing the dinosaurs misbehave and ultimately tell their parents goodnight. It does have a message about going to bed and not causing a fuss but its not an overbearing theme. I used this book before babysitting and the little girl wanted me to read it multiple times, she loved it! And to top it off, we had no problems at bedtime that night!

The illustrations fit the story perfectly. I love how each dinosaur's name is located somewhere on the pa...more

This book is really simple, so I'm not really sure why it's so fabulous... but it is. Lucy LOVES it. And when I taught first grade, my students loved it too. That's a pretty good age range! It is part of a series of books that teach manners/behavior by talking about how dinosaurs do something. My favorite thing about reading it to Lucy is that she answers the questions: "Does he (the dinosaur) fall on the top of his covers and cry?" She shakes her head, looks really serious, and says, "Noooooo."...more

This book is great to share with kids who are having trouble with bedtime. Jane Yolen uses dinosaurs to make the subject fun for children to read. Throughout the story it shows different things that children might do at bedtime, like scream and throw things, and in the end it shows how dinosaurs really act. So, it shows children that bedtime isn't a bad thing and if dinosaurs do a good job at it!
There are great illustrations and on each page the name of the dinosaur is hidden on each page so tha...more

My three year old son LOVES this book. The story is simple (do dinosaurs do various negative things like cry or demand piggy back rides when it is time for bed). The beauty in this book lies in the incredible illustrations. Mark Teague uses color brillaintly and the dinosaurs look so funny climbing in the human-sized beds. I also love that it is a fun bed time themed book...most of them out there are basically illustrated lullabies and my son just is not into that. This book is a must-read for t...more

"How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?" is a great book for students in the early elementary grades. I like how this book can be used to teach students how to use rhyme in their writing. But, I would use this book to teach students how to write using questions. Throughout the whole story, the author is asking the audience questions about how a dinosaur would act before he goes to bed. I think it would be interesting to ask students to write a story in this way, asking the audience questions about som...more

The size of this book really corresponds to the size of the dinosaurs. The book is pretty big and also the drawings of the dinosaurs make the dinosaurs seem even bigger because they are almost popping out of the page. The rhyming words are great for beginners. What I thought was cool was that on each page that show a new dinosaur, the name of the dinosaur was somewhere hidden in the room. That would make a fun game while reading the book aloud to have the kids try and find where the name is and...more

This is currently in heavy rotation at bedtime (or anytime really). The kiddo loves the illustrations and all the little details of the toys in the bedrooms. The only problem is that that his version of "dinosaur" and "dog" as in DOG DOG aka "Go Dog Go!" pretty much sound the same so sometimes I enrage my child by choosing the wrong book. Note to self: he pretty much only wants Dinosaur. "Go Dog, Go!" is so last week. In case you were wondering, dinosaurs are very well-behaved at bedtime. I don'...more

This book was a pleasant surprise. My 2 yr old son grabbed it at the library because it had a dinosaur on it. He is all about dinosaurs right now. But the story is very cute. It shows the dinosaurs doing all the silly things my son attempts to get out of going to bed. We laugh at how silly the dinosaurs are acting. When we get to how the dinosaurs give momma a kiss, he of course kisses me and mimics the dinosaurs getting into bed. Very cute.
We will have to get a copy of our own when we return th...more
