Everybody's doing the crime novel with monsters boogie these days. Here's another one and it ain't bad but nothing astoundingly different. It's the Prohibition gang war with devils shooting it out with creepazoids. The artwork reminded me of Joe Orlando in his Mad Magazine heyday. C+

"Dante's Inferno" meets "Miller's Crossing." That's all you really need to know about "The Damned," and though it seems like high praise, this book truly lives up to that spooky, darkly funny pedigree.

Mix demons with organized crime and what do you get? This! I really love the art, especially the more out-there sequences. Hurtt does terrific renderings of everyday life, but this book really shines in the more fantastic parts (like the little creepy demon with the little boxes). Bunn writes snappy patter with the best of them. He and Dashiell Hammett could sit down together and swap lingo without missing a beat. The only reason I do not rank this book higher is I am not much into crime comics,

Having enjoyed more adult comics such as Swamp Thing, this trade wasn't difficult to get into. That also applies to the fact that I'm familiar with Brian Hurtt and Cullen Bunn and I'll a film noir movie once in a while. I can't say I've came across a combination of horror and hard-boiled crime before, but I'm glad I did. It kind of makes me think that since horror and crime can be dark and depressing, they can go together if a writer knows what he or she is doing, which was the case with The Dam

1930’s-set supernatural noir horror, gotta love that combo. This is one of my top two favorites of the many good titles I discovered at the 2007 ComiCon. I look for more Damned every time I visit a comic shop.

A world where demons and the mafia co-exist is one I can't get enough of. The second volume of this wonderful comic series hits the shelves later this year -- definitely worth checking out.

Call me a chump but I really liked this book. Tough guys, mobsters, demons from hell and the undead, mix in a few criminally inspired monsters and how could I NOT like this book? One top of a great premise was great storytelling and fun black-and-white noir-style artwork. Soul-trafficking demons in a prohibition era setting, this was Goodfellas meets Hellblazer.
I can't wait for volume 2.

After reading this and Sixth Gun, I have become a fan of Cullen Bunn. This is basically a detective comic, but with demons involved who run the under world crime syndicate of the city. If you like demons, and like detective/crime comics, then check this out.

Spectacular gangster / horror-fantasy epic from the creators of The Sixth Gun. Imagine a James Cagney/Howard Hawks-style gangster movie by Guillermo del Toro.

Get on it, Hollywood. This book has everything I'm looking for in a summer blockbuster, and you wouldn't have to change a word.

Gangsters & demons in a fine and quite classic "noir" story. The comic book is an odd mixture but good & enjoyable anyway.

Book is an excellent take on old school mobster story with a twist. I really enjoyed it

Jason lent me this graphic novel, which is kind of a noir-fantasy mesh: a gangster world inhabited by demons. While it’s kind of a fun concept, and the protagonist’s predicament (he’s cursed to continually come back to life) is interesting, I found much of the dialogue overly clichéd and cheesy. If there is a volume 2, I may check it out, but it’s not high on my list.
