Left for Dead was a very interesting story for me to read, and it kept me flipping the pages because something new was happening all the time. It was basically about a lady named Ali Reynolds who is a former news reporter person. She then goes onto police academy and such, so she meets a lot of the cops that work in the state of Arizona, and knows a lot of people. When a young girl was found on the side of the road by a friend of Ali's, she gets involved to try to find the killer. While that was...more
A little harder for me to get into than other J. A. Jance books I have read though perhaps that is due to it being the first Ali Reynolds book I have read.
Two seemingly unconnected people are discovered near death, one a beaten and burned young woman in an area of the desert known to be a route taken by illegal immigrants, the other a law enforcement officer. What is the connection...or is there one? As the story goes on, several twists will cause the reader to wonder just who the bad guys are a...more

The Ali Reynolds series usually has the protagonist solving some kind of mystery, but in addition to the whodunit, this novel begins with two attempted murders. First is Jose Reyes, a classmate of Ali’s when she attended the Arizona Police Academy, who was shot in the stomach while on a routine traffic stop. The second is a young girl who ran away from home years earlier, left to die after being tortured and raped in a part of the Arizona desert where illegal immigrants cross over from Mexico.

When I first picked up this book, I was quite concerned since the previous book Fatal Error, was for me not up to the usual JA Jance standard.
I ended up enjoying Left for Dead from the very first paragraph. The Ali Reynolds’s feel was back, the story flowed and the subject matter was more believable.
Teenage Rose Ventana left her family’s home and became Breeze Domingo. Living a life of prostitution, she is traded to a horrible man when her pimp ran up a debt he could not pay. When Breeze outli...more

Jance's Ali Reynolds series has improved, but there are still some pretty unbelievable things going on. Ali Reynolds is a former newscaster whose station turned her in for a newer model. Her husband did the same thing. In the first few books, she wrote a ridiculous blog for women who were treated badly. Don't ask me why I've continued reading this series! Eventually, she went to the police academy and worked as the media rep for the local sheriff's department, but she was laid off. Now her crime...more
Another great storyline from J.A. Jance. I do enjoy this series. Very suspenseful; keeps your interest from first page to last.
Ali Reynolds investigates two shocking cases of victims brutally left for dead in New York Times bestselling J.A. Jance’s latest mystery-thriller. When Santa Cruz County deputy sheriff Jose Reyes, Ali’s classmate from the Arizona Police Academy, is gunned down and left to die, he is at first assumed to be an innocent victim of the drug wars escalating across the border....more

Reynolds returns in this rompy adventure, drawn into investigating the brutal attacks of a 'call girl' and a local policeman, the latter of whom is being framed for being on the take.
The mystery packs quite the punch in this story, although the personal side that Jance is typically good at seems a little weaker than usual. Mayhap because the pacing is a little off; the story begins in brutal style - with the detailed attack on 'Breeze' (hint she isn't the cop) then the shooting of the cop. Meanw...more

J.A. Jance’s detective series are a must for mystery fans. She is an American writer who captures the culture differences of the American population. Her dialogue rings true and the reader is instantly taken with the plight of genuine feeling characters.

I always enjoy reading J. A. Jance's novel. She is a good writer and her stories flow. She always does a great job of making her characters come alive on the pages. In this novel, Ali Reynold's seventh adventure, Ali heads to Tucson to help a fellow student from the Arizona State Police Academy. Jose has been attacked, left for dead and framed as a drug smuggler. Jose's wife is ready to give birth at any moment and has two young girls to care for. Ali is a tremendous help to Jose and his family....more
Do a prostitute and a county sheriff have something in common that led to them both being left for dead a few days apart? Or is it just coincidence?
Breeze Domingo is brutally raped and beaten before she is found barely alive. A traffic violation ends in the life-threatening shooting of Deputy Jose Reyes. And drugs are found in the police car, so Reyes might be better off if he died than face the hatred and scorn of fellow officers and townspeople.

Ali Reynolds is my favorite J. A. Jance main character. I really enjoy this series. In this installment, Ali's friend Jose Reyes, a Santa Cruz County deputy sheriff and a classmate of Ali's from the Arizona Police Academy is shot on the job and is in the ICU, while his very pregnant wife and 2 young step children wait for news. As the investigation into his shooting progresses, the evidence at the crime scene suggests that Jose is a "dirty cop" and mixed up in the drug trade and he and his wife...more
This latest addition to Jance's Ali Reynolds series was a fantastic read.
I'm a big fan of Judith Jance, who so continually develops the characters in all her various series that they seem like real people by the third book or so. "Left for Dead" adds some story to some of the peripheral characters in previous books, and sets up a big story for the next installment toward the end. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but it involved both Ali's career and at least one of her family members.

Book number 7 in the Ali Reynolds series by J.A.Jance. Most of this book reads like several somewhat disconnected stories told simultaneously, although in the end, they all come together to make the whole. Maybe the best of the Ali Reynolds books, but that is setting a very low bar. Ali learns that one of her police academy mates has been shot and is in the hospital in Tucson. When she goes to see if she can do anything to help, she learns that he is accused of dealing drugs - she doesn't believ...more

Since I grew up in Tucson, frequented Nogales, went to college in Flagstaff, and lived in Phoenix, I enjoyed Jance's familiarlty with the lay of the land. She even named streets and neighborhoods I know. Apart from that, I didn't enjoy the book at all.
The beginning was dynamite as she introduced 16 yr. old Breeze Domingo who turned out to be a runaway named Rose Ventana. It was intriguing, horrifying, and exciting. Would she be found? Would her pimp and torturers be found and receive their ow...more

This book starts off sedately enough with Ali Reynolds stuck, as usual, over which of two girls should receive the Askins Scholarship, for which Ali is responsible for awarding. The action picks up almost immediately in two side tales as a seventeen-year-old prostitute is left in the dessert to die and a sheriff's deputy is shot by an unknown assailant. The officer is a friend of Ali's, and she goes to the hospital to help his distraught wife deal with a gravely injured husband, two little girls...more
#7 in the Ali Reynolds series, by Ms. J. A. Jance.
I LOVED it. Love this character, Ali. She is a strong, powerful woman that knows how to take charge and get things done.
Set in Sedona, AZ, where she lives, she is drawn innocently into the after effects of an attempted murder of a deputy sheriff, Jose Reyes, a classmate of Ali's from the Arizona Police Academy that they both attended.
Owing a huge debt to Jose, Ali receives a call from another classmate, Donnatelle about the attempt on Jose's l...more

Pretty good thriller, although initially I was annoyed at having to turn back because there were too many names, subplots. Ali Reynolds and Sistem Anselm have their dinner reunion precluded by the near death of a call girl, who is abandoned in the borderlands. Jose Reyes, a policy academy buddy of Ali's (not the ex-Mets shortstop) is almost killed in the line of duty and framed as a drug dealer. Then a popular postman is killed, and also framed as a drug dealer. There seem to be no ties between...more
In the latest Ali Reynolds series by J. A. Jance, Ali is living a comfortable life in the serenity of the red cliffs of Sedona, Arizona. But in southern Arizona, there is a lot less serenity and comfort. One of Ali’s friends, Jose Reyes, is shot and left for dead in a deserted area near Tucson. Serving as a deputy sheriff, Jose and his pregnant wife, Teresa, would normally be surrounded and supported by other law enforcement. Instead, his boss and coworkers are searching their property for evid...more
In Jance’s mystery novel, Ali Reynolds is contacted by a former Arizona Police Academy classmate regarding an incident involving another former classmate who has just been gun downed and left for dead. Initially, circumstances point to an association with one of the drug cartels. But as the scene of the crime is processed, it becomes clear there is much more to the story. With a need to pay it forward, Ali finds herself at her fallen friend’s bedside where she encounters an unidentified young wo...more
I've been enjoying the Ali Reynolds series, but this book is less about Ali than it is about several other people. More than one subplot is kept up with, while Ali is a connecting strand. It was confusing at first but you could see the subplots beginning to coalesce about halfway through. There were two cases of full-blown psychosis, which I thought was a little much. Several gruesome murders, ostensibly unconnected, lead detectives down blind alleys. However, all is neatly wrapped up by the end...more
When a 17 year old girl who ran away from home when she was 14 is found brutally tortured and beaten, she is close to death. When Santa Cruz County deputy sheriff, Jose Reyes, is found shot, he is also close to death. These two end up in the ICU of the same hospital. Sister Anselm, a fabourite character from previous books, is called on to be a patient advocate for the teen-age girl, while Ali Reynolds, who attended police training with Joe Reyes, also goes to the hospital to help Jose's wife, T...more
This is part of a series of novels involving former anchor woman, former cop, former wife, Ali Reynolds, set mainly in the high deserts of Arizona (a key reason as to why I picked it up). Jance is a prolific writer and the style took a while to connect with me...another book by her as a matter of fact. This is an intriguing almost cosy style mystery with some significant violence a a great deal of detail of private lives and the way police forces work. A series of bizarre murders, seemingly unco...more
Jance books are always full of interesting characters and unexpected plot twists. This one was a bit more predictable than others; you could figure out "who done it" pretty easily by about halfway through. But it was still fun to watch her peel away all the layers and set the stage for the ending. I especially like the strong women characters she always puts in her books - they face adversity and come out on top. The only thing that was a bit annoying was the summarizing of what had happened wit...more
I have read a lot of Jance's earlier works, and enjoyed them.
This one, in my opinion, is not one of the author's better ones. I thought there was too much back and forth, and should have maybe been broken down into two different books. That said, I read this in one sitting, but only because of severe thunderstorms, so I did not want to use my computer to complete editing the July issue of the computer club newsletter.

I am really enjoying this new JA Jance character, Ali Reynolds. She is practical, has good common sense, and while she occasionally does some things that you are "What?"?" (and she does that here), she is generally not irritating.

Ali Reynolds finds herself caught up in a mystery when she goes to help the wife of a fellow classmate from the police academy who was shot during a routine traffic stop. It seems that none of his fellow officers have come to visit him and the State Police investigator is sounding as if the injured officer was actually wounded in a drug deal. With his wife also under suspicion Ali steps in with a fellow classmate to help out and find out what is really going on. Several more murders happen befor...more
A lot better than the last Ali Reynolds book. Too much of the last book was given to new non returning characters so it felt like a different series. This time it was split between Ali and returning character Sister Anselm and it all meshed well together. The only negative is that it looks like JA Jance is still looking for a direction for this series: what career can she give to Ali that lets her solve crimes without getting too close to Joanna Brady. (Nice touch in this book disconnecting this...more
(Mystery, 2012) I really enjoy the Reynolds series. Ali Reynolds finds herself helping an old friend from police academy days who has been attacked, left for dead, and framed for drug trafficking - and at the same time another friend is in the same hospital helping a young woman who was raped, attacked and left for dead. The two stories blend together with Jance's usual skill and make an exciting read. How Jance can keep so many different series going and keep them all riveting simply amazes me....more
