The story: The main girl is kicked out of her old school for violence and she starts at a new one. Her personality is very blunt, honest, and often sarcastic. She tries to fit in, but is percieved as stuck up. This makes becoming friends with her peers hard to do. She meets two other boys who go to the school.
The characters: I liked the main character's personality. Her honesty and sarcastic attitude, the way her eyes see others for what they really are. I also admired her attitude even with bei...more

I can see why this series has been getting consistently good reviews. This is a very good story. A Devil and Her Love Song is about Maria Kawai, a very perceptive and frank girl who manages to make people feel very uncomfortable with her cutting remarks and observations. The story starts with Maria's first day at a new school after having been kicked out of her former elite school. She rubs her new classmates the wrong way, which soon leads to an onslaught of nasty bullying. There are two boys w...more
I ended up discovering this the other day and I have to say, I'm completely in love with this manga. It has several things going for it.
First off, the artwork is really cute. For a character that doesn't show much emotion (at this stage, anyway), Maria is an incredibly fun character to look at. Her interactions with others really drive this manga, which is how it should be. The other characters are great, but let's be honest: it's Maria that is given the most loving attention at this point.

Another entry in the good-hearted-student-who-is-ostracized-for-looking-scary genre. This time it's Maria Kawai, a girl who enrolls at an ordinary, middle class high school after getting expelled from the prestigious St. Katria Academy. There are all sorts of rumors about why she was kicked out of her old school, which combined with the fact that she comes across like Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, guarantees that 99% of the students at her new school hate her at first sight. However, the...more
Maria Kawai was kicked St. Katria Academy and at her new school there are many rumors as to why she was kicked out. Maria is blunt and because of this when Maria arrives, it doesn't take too long for her to gain a lot of enemies.
I won this from a first reads giveaway and when I read this, it was much more different than I expected. From the title and the book description, I expected the main character to be a snob and probably very unlikeable. However, I found it to be the exact opposite of what...more

I went into this volume not really knowing what to expect, since I had barely even read the back. I kind of took it at face value, thought the artwork didn't look bad, and the title made me think that there would be some supernatural elements to it. But I don't think there are?
Pretty much, it's about Maria Kawai, who got kicked out of her last school and is starting at a new one not as prestigious as her first. She's seen as a snob, which doesn't help with the fact that she can see through p...more

3 1/2 stars. I see a lot of potential in this series, but for now I'm reserving judgment--just a bit. Maria Kawai is starting at a new school. She has been expelled from her old school, for beating up a teacher, or so she tells us. She is an interesting character. She has an amazing knack for reading people--for seeing through the image they present to the world. However, she doesn't seem to have any filters. She just blurts out her observations, regardless of their impact. And, naturally people...more
Maria Kawai is a devil - or so everyone says. On her first day at her new school, she announces that she was expelled from her last school, an abbey, because she beat one of the teachers. This teacher once gave her a cross necklace that she wears every day. With break-your-neck good looks, a beautiful singing voice, and an incredible sense of perception (not to mention brutal honesty), she is despised by many for her habit of making others face what they hate most about themselves. But when her...more
Maria is a hard girl to figure out. She wants friends, but is too blunt to get them. She can't seem to figure out how to get people to like her, but I think her core issue is she refuses to lie to anyone, no matter the circumstance. The fact that she can easily read people certainly doesn't help, especially when she is so quick to expose their true selves.
Yusuke and Shin are interesting as well. Yusuke has forced himself to become an extrovert so that everyone will like him, putting on a friendl...more

I won this book through the GR first reads program -- very exciting, the first time I've won one of these! And it arrived pretty quickly, too, which was nice because I needed to read it, review it, and pack it up to move to a new address next week....

Almost pathologically honest Maria is trying to figure out how to get along with her new classmates. It's an interesting read, because she is very insightful about people and she knows what's wrong with herself, but she just can't stop herself. Her "lovely spin" attempts are awkward and just end up creeping everyone out. So far, I like that it's not so much about the love interests, and will she go with the dark haired broody guy, or the light haired one with the sunny disposition masking his de...more
I was looking around in barnes and nobles two days ago for new manga while buying new voluemes of ai ore, bakuman, black butler, and the story of saiunkoku when I came across this series. I thought the cover of this book was interesting and so I bought it along with volume 2. After reading this book I thought it was amazing! I was hooked from the very beggining because of how the main character, Maria Kawai, had the same problems as me of wanting something. I cried while reading this book and wo...more
This is a really promising series. I really love the idea of a "hard-on-the-outside" leading female instead of the bubbly, young teenager that's head over heels in love with the most popular and unreachable guy. In the first volume, there isn't much plot, but is more a series of events that really introduce the main characters. The whole time, Maria is cold and unattached but you're rooting for her because you know that there is more to her. I kept waiting for her to smile, and when she did, I s...more

This book is the begining of her story going to this school, her school before was a catholic school that nuns teaches students and she got her necklace from her teacher. I <3 reading this book because she's different than other people. People hates her in her new school because she says the truth and sometimes the truth herts. She has a bad time in the school but is quite smart about what se's doing. She is pretty and a very good singer (juging from what the students says)But her speaking abo...more
This manga is actually pretty good. The protagonist has a personality and the other characters are given their own personality as well. This is a very interesting romance because the two main characters are interesting, have their own personality, and actually DO have chemistry. I don't think I'm giving anything away concerning who the main couple is. It's pretty obvious who the main character's love interest is.

I can't for the life of me tell why I like A Devil And Her Love Song so much, but I know this much: it didn't resemble anything I expected. It defies any attempt to pigeon it: the artwork is fantastically inconsistent, with some pages suggesting painstaking efforts contrasted with an absolute naivity in basic technical draughtmanship (the first scene with the protagonist kicking someone awake is such an example; her kicking leg suggests the artist was an who used a polo mallet for reference).

I received this book as a free giveaway from Goodreads.
I realize I am not the target demographic for this type of book, but as part of ongoing research about manga and graphic novels for my students, I am trying to gradually read a variety of comics (manga and otherwise. Even taking into considerations the cultural practices in which this story was structured, this was not a good book.

I could get to like this series very much. Maria Kawai is distant, intuitive and blunt and can see right through a 'lovely spin' to the true heart of people.
It's interesting and a good look at high school society that she ends up making friends with boys instead of girls. The girls at her school make fun of her but at frightened of her at the same time, due to her apparently bashing a teacher at her old Catholic school.
Looking forward to reading more :3

"When you fall from grace once, you're a screw-up forever."
Maria Kawai is beautiful, blunt and doesn't pretend to be anything she isn't. Imagine Spock in female form. Having been expelled from her previous school (for unknown reasons) she quickly alienates most of the population except for Yusuke-the popular, overly enthusiastic guy who tries to teach her how to put a "lovely spin" on her words and Shin, the sullen bad boy that likes to skip class and eventually finds himself falling for Maria....more

One of the standard shoujo manga plotlines, a heroine who despite her pure heart doesn't maintain a socially correct facade and manages to become an ostracized outcast bearing up with stoic grace under the abuse of her bullying classmates who find her odd, delinquent or sinister. But even though I've seen it before, I think I like this one better than most of the others.
Meguro. You are Will Herondale to me. Its you i see in my head as I read the clockwork series. I love you both.
Its very difficult, all this waiting around for each CHAPTER to come out. Not knowing WHEN. Anticipating and pacing. Kanda for me looks like Jem but the personality is far off enthusiastic than Jem and his fragile soul.

I am really enjoying this series - the lead character is well-written. Beautiful (of course) a bit naive (a popular trait in this genre) but also observant, fearless, and interested in making genuine friends. This heroine doesn't chase love or find herself in ridiculous love-triangles. I love the well-roundedness of her character.
I loved it. it was kinda hard to understand in the beginning, but I kept reading and I am glad I did. After I got used to how it flows, I loved it. It has a plot that always makes you wonder what is going on, and what is going to happen next. Its another take on a girl who gets kicked out of an elite school, and has to make due with a public school, with a lot of people looking down on her. It has an interesting spin to the story, making her a "devil with a love song". It fits Maria (main charac...more
When I received A Devil and Her Love Song by Miyoshi Tomori as a Goodreads review book I couldn't put it down. Being a big fan of Fruits Basket and Black Butler (as well as numerous other anime)I was eager to find what adventure Maria Kawai was going to take me along on. Maria reminds me of my own 14yr old daughter who is strong headed and vocally honest as well as has a beautiful singing voice. Before I knew it, I was closing the book and eagerly anticipating the next book to continue living wi...more
Maria Kawai is great and I love her the most. Here is a review-ish thing I wrote to prove it! P.S. Spoilers all over this mess, but nothing story breaking I should think. 4 stars
