This is not fine literature, but I usually find these learn-to-read books dull and this one tells a compelling story of a dog in Alaska who helps rescue a town by delivering medicine during a blizzard. My dog-fearing 4-year-old enjoyed listening to it and the author does a good job of describing the dangers of diptheria (the book is set in 1925) without scaring the bejeebers out of kids. I wish more early readers were as interesting to adults.

There are several versions of this book as well as a movie. if you have children in grade school, read the different versions of the book, then watch the movie and have a discussion, it's fun! If you do this just before the real iditarod, you can watch the progress of the race together!

Reading 2 versions of Balto and then watching the cartoon movie was wonderful for the kids. I did this with 3rd graders. I was surprised at the discussion and how good the kids were at comparing the book to the movie.

Reading the acts of bravery and heroism to my children, then thinking of the dire need of medicine for the children and possibly the whole town of Nome, AK brought tears to my eyes. Truly a very special book.

Could easily be incorporated with a study on heroes. Children will love this book about one dog's bravery. Reading level: difficult.

Thanks to this book Balto was my hero from the time I was 7 to the time I turned 10 or so. I still love Alaskan Malamutes.

Enjoyable, and exciting for the young reader. Several historical concepts can be expounded upon. There is a Balto movie.
