I'm a big fan of Marlene Perez's Nightshade novels, a humorous, paranormal, mystery series for young adults. The first five books center on Daisy Giordano, a magically gifted teenager who lives in Nightshade, a quirky little town filled with many other magical residents besides Daisy. When this book was released I excitedly assumed that it would be another Daisy book. I was initially disappointed when I discovered this book centers on a brand new heroine, 14-year-old Jessica Walsh, and Daisy is not even in it, other than a few mentions as someone Jessica only knows on sight. However, some familiar faces are in the story, such as Circe Silvertongue and Flo and her invisible brother from the town's diner, and Jessica herself soon won me over.

Jessica is just beginning her freshman year at Nightshade High School. She's a spunky girl and the author has presented her very believably as a young teenager. I would assume that, if this series has five books as the Daisy series did, that we will experience Jessica as she progresses through high school until, like Daisy, she is about to begin college.

Since this is a paranormal series, and teen novels all have to varying degrees the theme of "coming of age," naturally enough in this first book in the series Jessica has a magical coming of age as she discovers that she is a "Virago," a warrior protector whose mission is to guard the residents of Nightshade. Viragos are warned of impending danger by a special mark that looks like a tattoo. Jessica and a team of other teen Viragos come together to attempt to solve a mystery of why many of the girls at Jessica's school have become devoted to a new boy at school, to the point of obsession and outbreaks of violence. And on a personal level, Jessica is particularly worried because one of these girls is her best friend.

The main plot of this story is the mystery, but as in the Daisy series, there is a romantic subplot and, I am happy to report, there is no love triangle! Instead, Jessica has one highly sympathetic love interest, Dominic Gray, the cute-but-moody lead singer for a local band called Side Effects May Vary.

This book is clearly targeted at teens age 12-14, but it provides such innocent, harmless reading fun that children as young as 9-10 who are strong readers could safely enjoy it as well. Perez is a talented writer who has created a fascinating magical world in the community of Nightshade. The next book in the series will release soon, and I am greatly anticipating reading it.

The thing that sucks about series is that once you finish with the last book that is out you have to wait till the others come out and by that time you've probably read a bunch of other books that you forgot what happened. This is why i kind of don't like series.

The thing i love the most about Marlene Perez is that even though "Dead is a battlefield" is told in a different point a view she still mentions Daisy Gordano ,the main character in the first 5 books of the series. My only disappointmen...more

I understood that a lot of the people and town history were explained in previous books, but there is enough description throughout the book to never make me feel lost. Regardless, Jessica wants to have a normal high school experience. She was miss popular while she was younger, and she is hoping to continue life as normal with her best friend in high school. A new boy has become the singer of a local band that happens to be one of her favorites. Jessica hears how hot he is, and her best friend and her bum a ride from her best friend’s sister to see the bands first concert. Everyone is right, the new singer is HOT!!! However, Jessica is stubborn enough to not be one of the lovesick girls that throw themselves at him. This helps because she also meets and becomes friends with his sister. At the same time, a new store is coming to town. A creepy boy hands Jessica and her friends a flyer introducing it, then hands out a few samples of free perfume to some of the girls at school, including Jessica’s best friend. Jessica doesn’t get all the fuss, but everyone else is dying to get their hands on a special bottle of perfume from the new stores. Tingling sensations on Jessica’s arm demand attention, and through an unlikely twist, Jessica finds out that she is a virago, woman warrior. From there, new training begins, zombies run a muck, and love is in the air. How does Jessica become the new hero in Nightshade? What will all of the girls do about the new singer and Edgar? It’s time to find out by reading through this quick book. Hurry up before book 7 pops up.
My thoughts: This is a fun beach/pool read. The 7th book is expected to come out in September, so laying out by the pool and reading through this is a pretty good idea. If you are like me, you will read it in a day and be satisfied with reading it. It’s nothing to be jump up and down excited about, but it’s fun and keeps you moving. My high school teenagers (juniors and seniors) weren’t rushing me at the door to be the next to read this, but I handed it off to our librarian and she had several freshman that were “dying” to read it. Yes, that was a silly pun. I would say that younger teens and adolescents will be even more excited with the series because of how quickly the stories move. They are interesting, just not very deep. This is not a book that you are going to have to think about, it tells you exactly what is going on without a lot of hidden aspects. Even the overall zombie plot is out in the open. I was a little frustrated that Jessica took so long to figure it out. I’d hope that a younger reader would enjoy the mystery a little longer than I did.

Marlene Perez made it pretty evident in this book that the adventures of Daisy Giordano were over and she was getting some well deserved peace after 5 books. She was of course mentioned, no one could possible forget her and the great mysteries she solved, but she was never interacted with in this book. But that doesn’t mean the adventures are over in the town of Nightshade...far from it. Now we get brought not too far from home. To Daisy’s next door neighbour Jessica (love the same by the way)....more Marlene Perez made it pretty evident in this book that the adventures of Daisy Giordano were over and she was getting some well deserved peace after 5 books. She was of course mentioned, no one could possible forget her and the great mysteries she solved, but she was never interacted with in this book. But that doesn’t mean the adventures are over in the town of Nightshade...far from it. Now we get brought not too far from home. To Daisy’s next door neighbour Jessica (love the same by the way). You might remember her as Sean’s (Sam’s boyfriend and Ryan’s best friend) sister. And you remember (which I don’t blame you if you don’t, it took be a while to remember all the details) she helped kick some series butt when the dance/prom was coming down all around them, and a mysterious tattoo—reminding us of one pretty cool diner waitress—appeared on her body.
I thought it was all going to be over after book 5. That’s it, they’re in University, a lot of people have died and suffered, the story ends here. But a smile broke out across my face when I found out a different character in the Nightshade community was taking over, and of course some familiar faces (Poppy, Rose, Wolfgang) make some appearance.
Marlene sticks to what is familiar and what we know and does not disappoint when she takes the point of view of a freshmen in high school and introduces us to a new side of Nightshade, one that protects the community like Warriors.
And of course we have Jessica who is a lot like Daisy only with different talents and characteristics but also very unsure of herself. We watch as Jessica navigates the world of paranormal, high school and love with a firm hand and strong heart.
It was a cute quick read and I can’t wait for #7
Good:
Jessica—not only does she have an awesome name, but I like the idea of an almost Amazon like society that are created to defend the community. On top of that she is also stronger than Daisy in many ways: Physically, emotionally. She can kick butt and doesn’t take or play games with the guys she’s dating.
Dominic—He is obviously sexy, he’s the lead singer of a band, and an oracle. Lovely
Bad:
Like the other novels in the Dead Is series it is a short quick read and sometimes that’s not the best as some things feel rushed and crammed. It almost seems like the characters don’t have any time for reflection, which doesn’t allow us as readers a lot of time to reflect, things just happen one after the other. I guess we almost don’t get to know Jessica Walsh that much; just what she does in some tight situations. But, luckily, because it’s a paranormal series it all plays out over time
Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):
Overall the book was cute as always, the characters were all individually different and there were some that were just as bad as others were clearly good. I just wish the book would almost be a little longer with more details and emotion to warrant a 5/5

Ok, I didn't realize when I started this book that it was #6 in the series. So I was a tad bit confused when they "talked" about, or referred to something that happened in a previous book. The first thing I thought of when Marlene Perez came out with this book was, Wasn't Dead Isn't an Option the last book in the series? While this is the sixth book in the Dead Is... series, it is the first one narrated by freshman Jessica Walsh, instead of Daisy Giordano, a recent Nightshade High School graduate. I liked it but its not the same as the first series. I liked Daisy more but Jessica's okay too. I hope she and Dominic stay together till the end like Daisy and Ryan. Plus, it would have been more better if we learned about Daisy and Sam and Sean more in the book. It's like those characters don't exist any more. I saw this at Barnes and Noble yesterday and got really excited, then realized it was a spin-off. Now I'm not so excited. I'm sure it's great, but Daisy and Ryan have always been two of my favorite YA characters. I don't know if I'd be able to read about Nightshade from someone else's POV. I tend to hate spin-offs, but I'm willing to give this a try.

Daisy and Ryan better make an appearance though!

Ok, I get making a spin off of a series or focusing on other characters(this girl wasn't even a main character barely mentioned previously), but she should have made a new series from this one. I got this book because I thought it was part of Perez's "Dead Is...." series, which I really like a lot. The first one was "Dead Is the New Black" and surrounded the Giordano sisters, each one named for a flower and each one with a paranormal skill they use to fight local crimes. The Giordano sisters are only mentioned as peripheral characters, which is a shame because this main character isn't nearly so interesting.

This was my first foray in the Dead Is Series and I actually enjoyed this fun little read. From what I understand this is the first book in the Dead Is Spin-off series that features Jessica, whereas the previous five books were all based around a character, Daisy Giorando, who is only mentioned once in a while in this novel. I gather this is the next section of the series being told from Jessica's POV.

I received this book in the mail from the publisher to read and review. While I ALWAYS read series in order (I can't recall EVER having started a series in the middle of it) I knew that I would be unable to do so in this case due to time constraints, plus, after reading the synopsis' of the earlier books on Goodreads I felt comfortable reading this book without having read the earlier books as each book appeared to be a self-contained book, a book which though has repeating characters has its ow...more I received this book in the mail from the publisher to read and review. While I ALWAYS read series in order (I can't recall EVER having started a series in the middle of it) I knew that I would be unable to do so in this case due to time constraints, plus, after reading the synopsis' of the earlier books on Goodreads I felt comfortable reading this book without having read the earlier books as each book appeared to be a self-contained book, a book which though has repeating characters has its own individual storyline that is nicely summed up by the end of the book (additionally this book's main character is Jessica where in the earlier books the main character was Jessica's neighbour Daisy)- which, thankfully, did turn out to be the case.

As mentioned, as I had never read any of Marlene's books before I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but it surely wasn't this. This book was a fair bit more juvenile than I thought that it would be- both in the fact that in this book Jessica is four just entering her first year of high school and that I found the plot of it to be more so MG than YA- with love potions, character reactions, insta-love and the likes of (I found the plot to be similar to Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Infinity").

An additional problem I had with the book was that I found that overall it lacked any emotion- Not once while reading this book did I experience any feelings of "SQUEE" at the sappy moments nor heartpounding feelings at the most action-packed moments. Futhermore, after having read the book I don't feel like I truly know any of characters- I found that they were quite flat and one-dimensional (I mean, Dominic Gray is a rockstar, you'd think I would swoon once or twice over him, not unlike Logan from Jeri Smith-Ready's "Shade" series). AND I felt that there were A) far too many characters to keep track of and B) many of the characters had similar names which both resulted in it being difficult to keep track of each and every one of them (for instance Eva and Evan, a potential couple).

That being said, despite the storyline being much more juvenile than I had expected it was fun and lighthearted, a nice reprieve from heavier and darker YA books. Furthermore, the book was an EXTREMELY quick read (I think that I finished it within 2 or so hours). I think that this book would be perfect for fans of Gina Damico's "Croak" and earlier Meg Cabot series, including her "Mediator" series and her "1-800-Where-R-You" series.

A Short and Fun Read!

Dead is a Battlefield is only 240 pages in a very small book format. Who would have though that in such tiny little package such great enjoyment could actually be found! This book certainly gives a short, yet fast-paced and fun read!

When I first saw this book I was pretty sure it was a contemporary novel, and in part it is. Yet, there are some paranormal elements that gave me a pleasant surprise and certainly gave the plot a great twist!

The story is told from Jessica's point of view. She is a very likable protagonist as well as smart. They are certain decisions she takes during this story that, regardless her young age, demonstrates how this character grows through her own experiences. The are other characters who are fun, likable, delicious or detestable (insert Selena here). However, since I am not used to read books so short, I think I didn't have enough time to fall in love with the characters as much as I do with longer books. Yet, I have to mention that this is my very first book in this series so I am absolutely new to this world. Having said that, I think people who has already read the previous books in the Dead Is series will find themselves enjoying a wonderful re-encounter with all the characters that have already showed up during Perez's previous books.

There is also a strong love interest in the story even though the romance is subtle. However, there is also drama to this romance between Jessica and Dominic which provides the tension that many relationships have, a love triangle...but not really. Selena is a girl who is obsessed with Dominic and tries everything in her power to distract him from getting closer to Jessica. Yet, Dominic's experience with Selena are pretty blurry and strange which makes readers to question themselves who are really are these characters and what' s going on between them. However, there is more to this story than just a subtle romance. Viragos, Seers, Magic and Zombies!!!... do I need to say more? :)

Dead is a Battlefield is a short and fast-paced read that can easily be enjoyed by readers in just one seat. With a short but dynamic plot, this book assures readers enjoyment from beginning to end!(less)
