Book 1 in a new paranormal, mystery series for young teens
I'm a big fan of Marlene Perez's Nightshade novels, a humorous, paranormal, mystery series for young adults. The first five books center on Daisy Giordano, a magically gifted teenager who lives in Nightshade, a quirky little town filled with many other magical residents besides Daisy. When this book was released I excitedly assumed that it would be another Daisy book. I was initially disappointed when I discovered this book centers on a b...more

The thing that sucks about series is that once you finish with the last book that is out you have to wait till the others come out and by that time you've probably read a bunch of other books that you forgot what happened. This is why i kind of don't like series.
The thing i love the most about Marlene Perez is that even though "Dead is a battlefield" is told in a different point a view she still mentions Daisy Gordano ,the main character in the first 5 books of the series. My only disappointmen...more

The Dead Is series are little bon-bons books. They are small and sweet and light. I was excited to see a new book by Marlene Perez was coming out (as I always am) and went into the book knowing that it was going to be about somebody besides the beloved Daisy and her boyfriend Ryan. That said, I couldn't help but be somewhat disappointed with this book. While the town of Nightshade is as interesting as ever I felt that there were some real pacing problems while the author tried to balance between...more

Marlene Perez made it pretty evident in this book that the adventures of Daisy Giordano were over and she was getting some well deserved peace after 5 books. She was of course mentioned, no one could possible forget her and the great mysteries she solved, but she was never interacted with in this book. But that doesn’t mean the adventures are over in the town of Nightshade...far from it. Now we get brought not too far from home. To Daisy’s next door neighbour Jessica (love the same by the way)....more
OMG!! Marlene Perez changes the main character to Jessica, a freshman of Nightshade High. She is the sister of Sean, Daisy' brother friend's best friend, a complex relationship. I have to say I really miss Daisy and Ryan because I got really attached to them in the other books. However, Marlene Perez did not change her way of writing, the strange things happen in Nightshade attract me as always.

Now that the series' main character Daisy Gordano is off to college we pick up the story of Nightshade with Jessica, a freshman that I'm guessing we'll follow through high school if the series stays popular. Jessica, like the other citizens of Nightshade is paranormal--in her case she is a virago, a woman warrior with a mysterious tattoo that warn her when there is a threat to her city so that she can battle evil. There is a love interest (or two) of course and mysterious evil to be fought. Not...more
Ok, I didn't realize when I started this book that it was #6 in the series. So I was a tad bit confused when they "talked" about, or referred to something that happened in a previous book. Having said that--it was still a fairly good read. I might have to re-visit it after I've read some of the previous ones, and see if it reads better when I know WHAT is going on.

The first thing I thought of when Marlene Perez came out with this book was, Wasn't Dead Isn't an Option the last book in the series? Then I realized that this book was based of Jessica, Sean's little sister. I was so upset because I really wanted more from Daisy but I ended up liking this book too. I thought it was really cool how the author included a giant man eating ant and fungi. I think that the whole Edward Love thing was a little odd though, but very predictable. The thing with the Dead...more
While this is the sixth book in the Dead Is... series, it is the first one narrated by freshman Jessica Walsh, instead of Daisy Giordano, a recent Nightshade High School graduate. I did enjoy this book, but I miss Daisy's adventures with her boyfriend and psychic sisters. This book has the usual unusual characters who have ghoulish fun. Perez's addition of zombies added a new layer of humor. By the end of the book, I had almost forgotten about Daisy, but I remember her enough to only give this b...more
At the end of the last book in the series, I was expecting to be transported with Daisy Giordano to Nightshade University; kudos to Perez for breathing new life into the series by changing the narrator and the focus. Daisy and her sisters (along with other key minor characters) still show up in varying roles, but now we view things through the eyes of Nightshade High frosh Jessica Walsh. Her struggles with her new role in the community parallel what Daisy went through in the original book with l...more
I liked it but its not the same as the first series. I liked Daisy more but Jessica's okay too. I hope she and Dominic stay together till the end like Daisy and Ryan. Plus, it would have been more better if we learned about Daisy and Sam and Sean more in the book. It's like those characters don't exist any more. Sure the author mentions it but only like their names they don't appear in the book, which is odd since they are living in Nightshade and people bum into one another all the time. Howeve...more
I saw this at Barnes and Noble yesterday and got really excited, then realized it was a spin-off. Now I'm not so excited. I'm sure it's great, but Daisy and Ryan have always been two of my favorite YA characters. I don't know if I'd be able to read about Nightshade from someone else's POV. I tend to hate spin-offs, but I'm willing to give this a try.
Daisy and Ryan better make an appearance though!

I don't believe I read this book in the correct order, but it was fun enough that I may go back and read the other 5.
Teens entangled in jealousy while fighting supernatural foes, sound familiar? But this is lighthearted enough, but a little bit of thrilling danger, and not taking itself seriously.
Teen finds out she is a member of supernatural group that defends town from evil threats. She is often way slow to make obvious connections, but is always concerned about the average teen concerns, so i...more

Okay, this is a spinoff of the first five books, meaning new characters in the same town. People seem to not get that as I see a lot of complaining about that. Oh, and if you haven't read Dead Is Not An Option then I may end up spoiling a little bit for you. So just forewarning and if you want, just go check out other things of this blog, cause I really don't want to spoil anything! ^_^

Ok, I get making a spin off of a series or focusing on other characters(this girl wasn't even a main character barely mentioned previously), but she should have made a new series from this one. Getting all of us Die Hard Daisy and Ryan fans excited over a new book for nothing. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it will be a great story, but I feel it will leave something to be desired. Just because Daisy is college aged, doesn't mean they cant continue. Morganville Vamps is huge and she was in college....more
I got this book because I thought it was part of Perez's "Dead Is...." series, which I really like a lot. The first one was "Dead Is the New Black" and surrounded the Giordano sisters, each one named for a flower and each one with a paranormal skill they use to fight local crimes. The Giordano sisters are only mentioned as peripheral characters, which is a shame because this main character isn't nearly so interesting.

The story takes place in Nightshade, California with Jessica Walsh, who is beginning her freshman year at Nightshade High School. Her hope of finding normalcy in high school is dashed when a mysterious tattoo appears on her arm, and she discovers she is a Virago which is a woman warrior who fights when her city is in trouble. Nightshade is a city that is terrorized by vampire and zombies. Jessica finds herself attracted to Dominic, a singer in a new band in town. His weird behavior complicates h...more

This was my first foray in the Dead Is Series and I actually enjoyed this fun little read. From what I understand this is the first book in the Dead Is Spin-off series that features Jessica, whereas the previous five books were all based around a character, Daisy Giorando, who is only mentioned once in a while in this novel. I gather this is the next section of the series being told from Jessica's POV.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT
I have to admit I don't remember Jessica from the previous books in the series, but I will never forget her now! Jessica grew up next door to Daisy Giordano and her boyfriend Ryan is her older brother Sean's best friend. Jessica didn't think she had anything in common with the other paranormals living in Nightshade but that all starts to change when a tattoo like mark appears on her arm. Flo from the diner immediately recognizes Jessica as a Virago, a chosen female...more

My Summary: Daisy's gone off to University, but Nightshade hasn't been left unprotected - Jessica, Daisy's neighbour, has taken up the post Daisy left behind after the tragic events of her last few weeks of high school.
But Jessica isn't Daisy, and while she might be good at kicking butt, there's only one thing she's focused on: surviving her first year of high school. And when a new boy...more

I received this book in the mail from the publisher to read and review. While I ALWAYS read series in order (I can't recall EVER having started a series in the middle of it) I knew that I would be unable to do so in this case due to time constraints, plus, after reading the synopsis' of the earlier books on Goodreads I felt comfortable reading this book without having read the earlier books as each book appeared to be a self-contained book, a book which though has repeating characters has its ow...more

I have been wanting to read this book for a long time, but wasn't able to get to it. I have always loved this series. I loved the first part with Daisy and Ryan and a lot of other characters. I was glad when I found out that the series would continue as a spin-off and Jessica Walsh (Samantha who is Daisy's best friend, had a boyfriend and Jessica is his sister.) would be the main character in it. I thought the plot was pretty good and it continued on with the supernatural powers and the mysterio...more
This book marks the beginning of the Jessica Walsh era - Jessica takes over as heroine of the Dead Is series from Daisy Giordano. Psychic Daisy and her sisters are the Walsh's next door neighbors, and Daisy's boyfriend Ryan is the best friend of Jessica's older brother Sean. Jessica doesn't have psychic powers, but she does have a strange new tattoo that just appears without the use of needles. She learns she's a virago, a supernatural warrior-woman destined to guard her hometown of Nightshade,...more
