A precursor to the author's later book, Good to Great, Built to Last is a scientifically backed study of what separates Visionary Companies from Merely Good Companies.
There's a lot of good stuff here, but it is best summed up with their remark that "building a visionary company is a design problem" as opposed to a more mechanistic problem.
And that sounds exactly right. A cookie cutter approach simply doesn't work. Instead, companies need to take a really deep look a...more

Кни...more
So far in business there are three highly respected books written about research performed on businesses and what makes them successful. The first would be In Search of Excellence. The second would be Built to Last and, finally, Good to Great.
Built to last compares companies within the same industry to see what makes one “visionary” and the other not so visionary. It looks at several different industries this way. The book acknowledges that there may be some flaws with its research but, in...more

i really enjoyed the anecdotes and it had some interesting points, but most of it was a little too vague and general for what it proposes to be. good to great was much more interesting because it dealt with a situation with a sharper contrast within the organization. when you are tracking a successful company through its whole history and trying to decide why it's the best, you have to get too broad and vague as opposed to dealing with a short time period (like in good to great) and observing th...more
This is one of the few business books I read cover to cover. I found its idea of what makes companies great to be an inspiring one. It led me to formulate my own "Big Hairy Audacious Goal," which I've tried to use to guide my company ever since: Changing the world by spreading the knowledge of innovators.
Visionary companies are premier institutions - the crown jewels - in their industries, widely admired by their peers and having a long track record of making a significant impact on the world around them. The key point is that a visionary company is an organization - an institution. All individual leaders, no matter how charismatic or visionary, eventually die; and all visionary products and services - all "great ideas" - eventually become obsolete. Indeed, entire markets can become ob...more
The biggest problem facing organizations today is not from a dearth of new management ideas (we’re inundated with them), but primarily from a lack understanding the basic fundamentals and, most problematic, a failure to consistently apply those fundamentals. Contrary to popular wisdom, the proper first response to a changing world is not to ask, “How should we change?” but rather to ask, “What do we stand for and why do we exist?” This should never change and then feel free to change everything ...more
Is there a formula to becoming a corporate performance juggernaut? Built to Last, the management classic written by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in 1994, takes a crack at answering just that question. The book is a summary of authors’ and their Stanford Graduate School of Business team's six year research project “to identify underlying characteristics that are common to highly visionary companies” and “to effectively communicate findings so they can influence management.”

I'm reading this book for a company book club. My company views this work as guide for building and maintaining the company...making sure that it's 'built to last'. Reading Built to Last is also part of my indoctrination into the company culture, which I am told I am a good 'fit' for. It only follows that our book discussions are filled with comparisons of our company and the 'visionary' companies studied. We spend time relating what we read to what we see on a day-to-day basis at work, which ma...more
This is a superb book from the business world about what makes enduring visionary companies so enduring and visionary. They're not just talking about anyone. They want to know how to make as deep an impact on culture as Disney, Sony, Walmart, Merck, Ford, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Boeing and other such companies.

Built to Last is about the qualities "visionary companies" possess. It compares exemplary companies that have withstood the test of time with their less successful, less resilient counterparts. From reading this book, I learned a lot about what it takes to build and maintain a "visionary company," from establishing core values, purpose, and BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) to constantly innovating to practicing consistently what is preached in mission and vision statement...more

This is a groundbreaking book that tells us how to build landmark companies that stand the test of time. The subject of Collins' and Porras' study was 'What makes the truly exceptional companies different from the other companies?' By answering such questions, Collins and Porras go beyond the incessant barrage of management buzzwords and newfound fads to discover timeless qualities that have consistently distinguished outstanding companies. Interesting book with insightful case studies displaying what separates a truly 'visionary company' from middle of the pack comparisons. Collins and Porras do a good job of keeping in view most sides of their hypothesis while presenting practical applications of their findings. The book is very light on the "step by step plan to success" you see in most business and management books; rather, Built to Last focuses more on the cultural aspects of what can drive a company to success.
Corporate blah blah blah blah.
I struggled to get through it, but it wasn't the most painful business book ever. I just can't stand the earnestness. Business books that read like they just found the map to the holy grail irk me. Cop to having a great deal of luck and admit your outlook may be totally wrong, but it's the best you could schlep together with what you know, and I'll get on board. If you fully buy into your own BS, I'm not going to enjoy your work.

A pale logical follow-up to Good to Great, by the same author. To sum it up comparatively, Built to Last is more juice (anecdotes), less pulp (thought).
Collins explains a comprehensive explanation of a study of "visionary" companies. These companies were compared to a control group of similar companies that have not performed nearly as well. Common factors are presented, along with concrete recommendations. Collins points out the importance of core ideology as a unifying theme for corporate performance. Built to Last is a great presentation of ideas that are later improved upon in "Good to Great." Well worth your time.

Excellent approach to help leaders in all organizations understand the interplay between stability and innovation as they work to build meaningful organizations. The authors leadership continuity loop (p. 174) is a good foundation for talent management.
Best quote, "One of the most important steps you can take in building a visionary [organization] is not an action, but a shift in perspective" (p. 40).

I'm definitely a Jim Collins fan. I appreciate his evidence based approach to understanding excellence in organizations. For those in pharmacy, you have to consciously work at translating these large scale, finance laden, corporate examples to an individual pharmacy. But, the concepts do generalize.
I read Good to Great first and then "went back" and read this (which is actually earlier work). But, that was fine.

Provides some interesting insights on what successful companies might do. However, I felt that their points were weakened in that they described each of the ideas as not necessary or sufficient to have a visionary company. They also didn't consider the alternative - that companies had implemented their ideas and failed miserably. It would have been nice to see some counterpoints addressed.
I was also a little disappointed with the way they represented the comparison companies. Many of...more

Good compilation of successful "visionary" companies and what made them that way. I enjoyed a lot of the background stories with each company. It was also interesting to see which companies were considered visionary in the mid-90s (when the book was written) compared with today. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Citi and Motorola wouldn't be considered "visionary" in today's business world.
Without a doubt one of the best business books I have read.
Built To Last breaks down a lot of successful companies and compares them with similar substitute companies. Though many of these companies are struggling today due to the economy, surely, these Built to Last companies will grind its way through.
Highly recommended and will be picking up Good To Great by Jim Collins when I get the chance.

One of the very best management books I've ever read. An eye opener actually. The concepts introduced by the author are very simple but effective. Sometimes these concepts are unintentionally forgotten or ignored probably because of work pressure or absence of guiding principles. This book helped me to better define visions and align strategies to achieve the vision. Highly recommended.
Collins and Porras completed this seminal business work in the 90s, and it is fascinating to look at companies like Motorola that they pegged as visionary, in their current struggles. Still, they identify characteristics of visionary companies that are still very useful in applying to successful businesses. Instead of time-tellers, Collins recommends being clock-makers. Good stuff.
One of the best business books.
First time I read it, it was assigned as part of my strategy class. First assigned book that I enjoyed reading.
It is a very easy and interesting read. You keep learning about the concepts using real life companies and examples.
Six years after my strategy course, the same book was part of my assigned reading in one of my MBA classes.

This book changed my picture of success. Have you gone through the exercise of discovery your passion? If not, read this book. I recommend this book to anyone who is battling the war of discovering their talent or simply what you are passionate about in life. I'm convinced there is a correlation between Passion and Success, this book will help with that discussion.
Surprisingly good book. I bought this book because I like reading about good companies and their practices... in contrast to my own work environment. This book reinforced by belief that my company is truly in grave danger, but also shows that not every workplace is full of incompetence. In addition to the good material, the book is also very easy to read (1 1/2 days for me).
This book made me a lot of money. I enjoyed it when I first read it. But then when the stock market crashed at the end of 2008. I figured i would put this book's premise to the test. I bought the stocks of several of the companies recognized in this book. In less than 1 year I had doubled my money. In the end I nearly tripled it. I still have my original invested amount and a fully paid for time share in Maui. It pays to read and then apply. Thanks.
I could definitely see the beginnings of Good to Great here, but the genesis of these ideas is even murkier than in that questionably sourced book. I really love some of the central ideas of the book, and it can't help but be inspiring to hear the fascinating anecdotes therein, but anecdote alone is not enough to make me really believe anything beyond this book's simple, albeit invaluable, core concept: belief, in companies in this case, empowers the believer, and will allow them to achieve more...more
