This is a great serial killer thriller! As an author of the serial killer mystery Absolution, I'm a huge admirer of John Lutz. I've read many but not all of his books. This is a good thing, because there are a few more of his well-written thrillers that I can look forward to reading.

This is my introduction to John Lutz's work and in particular to Frank Quinn. I found the book extremely interesting and I never got tired of the twists and turns as the story developed. It keeps the reading wondering what is going to happen next. Lutz's characters are believable and draw the reader into the story. He does an excellent job of going back and forth between two geographically separated areas and cases seamlessly so that the reader is not concerned with either case independently but...more
This was a terrific book!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I am extremely glad that I have found another author that genuinely enjoy and has series. This book kept you on the edge of your seat always wanting to continuing your reading. The pieces seemed to fit until you reached the end and saw the surprise that you should have seen all along. Will definitely read more by the author!!!

John Lutz uses one approach to writing all his books. Sometimes this method of using current events intertwined with past history really works and sometimes it falls short. Serial is one of John's better outings with excellent character development with some real toe-curling suspense added at just the right times.

Not liking it much. The relationship between Pearl and Quinn (really between anyone she interracted with) was annoying. However I did like one character towards the end, Mrs Cranston. Lucky me I stuck it out, although I was tempted to call it quits long before that. Here is Mrs. Cranston in all her glory, I dont know if she was hard of hearing or just had selective hearing.

A well written book featuring ex-NYC cop, Frank Quinn, and his patchwork group of former law enforcement officers who are highly regarded as the best at tracking down serial killers. The book starts out with a rape victim being slowly tortured to death. The killer peels away the victim's skin and wakens her with ammonia when she falls unconscious. This goes on until she dies. I quite enjoy serial killer plots, and although the protagonist in this one was a bit gruesome, the book stands up well to others in the genre. It's well detailed, both in the plot and characters, and although there sometimes seems a bit too much happening with sub-plots, twists and dead-ends, it all links up well and adds depth and suspense to the story. Serial is a fantastic read. It keeps you gripped from the start and the gritty detail of the characters and crimes committed do no leave much to the imagination!

Serial was my first outing with John Lutz and it was just good enough that I will look for other opportunities.
The prose is written with a style and pace kind of like watching an old Dragnet tv series updated to add women PI's to the script.

Gotta love the Quinn series. With good ole Feds and Pearl. I always enjoy the ones where they're working so closely. I thought something would go terribly wrong with Feds love life, that there'd be a twist involving the new lady but maybe they'll save that for another book. Or maybe I'm just completely wrong! Anyway, good plot line, awesome killer who I found impossible to pinpoint. I still wonder about the DNA piece and how he avoided a match for so long.
I generally like the "Quinn" series by John Lutz, but this one lacked some of the spark. Usually his characters are so quirky that they are funny, and enjoyable to read about. This time they just seemed off. The story was still incredibly suspensful, and I was completely out in left field on who I thought the killer was. Just missing the comic relief this time around.
Great detective thriller with an effective format of converging plots. Strong characters like Frank Quinn, Pearl, Fedderman, Sherif Wayne Westerly,etc....chilling accounts of the "serial" murders that made you want to finish the book and "make sure the sadistic bastard was caught"
I got this book for free as part of a Goodreads giveaway. First couple hundred pages went fast and were relatively entertaining due to the rather simple writing style. About 100 pages left and am getting quite bored and rather annoyed at the redundancy of the style.

I was on a cruise, so had LOTS of time to read. And I read this one in one day. I probably would have given it five stars if I just hadn't read another book by John Lutz two days before. But if you like serial killers then he is your author!

Overall, this book was okay. It didn't get good until toward the end where it everything made sense. This series the Frank Quinn is a little predicatable and sometimes unexpectedly good. I never really know what to expect when I read this series.
Women were being murdered and the one thing they had in common was that they had been raped. The kicker was they all identified the wrong man who was later cleared threw DNA. I did not finish this book. After the fifth wrongful identification and murder I said five different men five different rapes????
I am going straight to the library to look for the first two books in this series! So good, the characters, the suspense, the creepy, gory details... how this author has escaped me up to now I do not know.
I've never read John Lutz before. I loved the story but I'm not a huge fan of his style of writing. I did like it enough to be interested in more of his books.
Didn't like it much - way too long and lot's of little mistakes and inconsistencies that were just annoying. Sloppy writing is what I call it. I don't think I'll read any of his other books any time soon.

This is a good serial killer mystery by a St.Louis author (which we know adds to its value). I enjoyed it throughout and will now go back to read some of John Lutz's many previous novels.
I really enjoyed this book in the Frank Quinn series. His books are always a page turner.
This book was a great read. Good pace, interesting plot, and a nice twist at the end
