This is a great serial killer thriller! As an author of the serial killer mystery Absolution, I'm a huge admirer of John Lutz. I've read many but not all of his books. This is a good thing, because there are a few more of his well-written thrillers that I can look forward to reading.
What I love about his books: Lutz always grabs me by the throat with the first line. "Millie Graf's feet were sore." How can you not love the woman? And that's the point. You meet and spend just enough time with the...more

This is my introduction to John Lutz's work and in particular to Frank Quinn. I found the book extremely interesting and I never got tired of the twists and turns as the story developed. It keeps the reading wondering what is going to happen next. Lutz's characters are believable and draw the reader into the story. He does an excellent job of going back and forth between two geographically separated areas and cases seamlessly so that the reader is not concerned with either case independently but...more
This was a terrific book!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I am extremely glad that I have found another author that genuinely enjoy and has series. This book kept you on the edge of your seat always wanting to continuing your reading. The pieces seemed to fit until you reached the end and saw the surprise that you should have seen all along. Will definitely read more by the author!!!
John Lutz uses one approach to writing all his books. Sometimes this method of using current events intertwined with past history really works and sometimes it falls short. Serial is one of John's better outings with excellent character development with some real toe-curling suspense added at just the right times.

Not liking it much. The relationship between Pearl and Quinn (really between anyone she interracted with) was annoying. However I did like one character towards the end, Mrs Cranston. Lucky me I stuck it out, although I was tempted to call it quits long before that. Here is Mrs. Cranston in all her glory, I dont know if she was hard of hearing or just had selective hearing.
"Is that a wallet?" (Mrs. Cranston)
"Sort of." (Quinn)
"Are you offering me some kinda bribe?" (Mrs. Cranston)

SERIAL by John Lutz is a heart pounding #6 “Frank Quinn” novel. It is written with depth, details, and the characters will have you on the edge of your seat. It has a devious serial killer, torture, murder, police procedural, with twists and turns that will leave you breathless. It will grab you from the first sentence to the last with a bit of romance. When one of the victims is gagged, tortured, and violated but survives, only one man can help her hunt the killer that is Frank Quinn.Frank recognizes the...more
A well written book featuring ex-NYC cop, Frank Quinn, and his patchwork group of former law enforcement officers who are highly regarded as the best at tracking down serial killers. Serial is fairly graphic on how the killer leaves his victims so the squeamish should skim over the grisly parts and focus on how Quinn etal work doggedly to find the killer. This procedural jumps back and forth from a small town in Missouri to New York City and it took almost the entire 500 pages to learn what the...more
The book starts out with a rape victim being slowly tortured to death. The killer peels away the victim's skin and wakens her with ammonia when she falls unconscious. This goes on until she dies. Frank Quinn is hired by the police commissioner to find the killer. The victime had sent an innocent man to prison for her rape. He was later cleared with DNA evidence and released. Each future victim had done the same thing. The search narrowed to the men who had been wrongfully convicted. But, Which o...more
I quite enjoy serial killer plots, and although the protagonist in this one was a bit gruesome, the book stands up well to others in the genre. It's well detailed, both in the plot and characters, and although there sometimes seems a bit too much happening with sub-plots, twists and dead-ends, it all links up well and adds depth and suspense to the story. There are a few things that stop if from being really great, there doesn't seem any great urgency to track down the killer, and there's a lot...more
John Lutz scares me again! Another serial killer is loose in New York City and Frank Quinn and Associates are assigned by the Commissioner to catch the brutal killer. The killer is called "The Skinner". (Use your imagination). What makes the Quinn novels really frightening to me is that Lutz introduces each victim. You get to know them. You get a perfect picture of who they are and how they live. You cheer for them and then follow them to their horrifying deaths. There are lots of twists and tur...more
Serial is a fantastic read. It keeps you gripped from the start and the gritty detail of the characters and crimes committed do no leave much to the imagination!
One of my favourite aspects of this book is that the chapters, even though everything is described profoundly, are short. This enables the reader to put the book down at regular intervals, which is handy if you are reading while working, and you can keep up with the story and its fast pace action whilst the events are embedded on your mi...more

I was really hoping that I would love this book. I looked forward to reading it for months. And alas I was quickly disappointed. The book descriptive, good characters, and sufficiently creepy that it had all the makings of a good story. Yet this was my journey...

In New York City, women are being brutally murdere;, slowly tortured until death finally takes them, but not until the killer, dubbed the Skinner by the press, has had his fun. At first, the murders seem random, however, PI Quinn soon learns that each of these women had mistakenly ID the wrong guy for a rape they did not committ. With the advancements made in DNA research, these wrongly imprisoned men have been released, but which of those men is the killer? As the number of victims grows, PI Qu...more
Serial was my first outing with John Lutz and it was just good enough that I will look for other opportunities.
The prose is written with a style and pace kind of like watching an old Dragnet tv series updated to add women PI's to the script.
I thought the story offered a very unique twist pulled from todays headlines where men have been wrongfully accused of rape and murder only to be exhonerated years later by DNA. The study in humanity and society on how these men, some now victims themselve,...more

Gotta love the Quinn series. With good ole Feds and Pearl. I always enjoy the ones where they're working so closely. I thought something would go terribly wrong with Feds love life, that there'd be a twist involving the new lady but maybe they'll save that for another book. Or maybe I'm just completely wrong! Anyway, good plot line, awesome killer who I found impossible to pinpoint. I still wonder about the DNA piece and how he avoided a match for so long.
I generally like the "Quinn" series by John Lutz, but this one lacked some of the spark. Usually his characters are so quirky that they are funny, and enjoyable to read about. This time they just seemed off. The story was still incredibly suspensful, and I was completely out in left field on who I thought the killer was. Just missing the comic relief this time around.

I was on a cruise, so had LOTS of time to read. And I read this one in one day. I probably would have given it five stars if I just hadn't read another book by John Lutz two days before. But if you like serial killers then he is your author!

frank quinn series, mystery, new york, serial
Overall, this book was okay. It didn't get good until toward the end where it everything made sense. This series the Frank Quinn is a little predicatable and sometimes unexpectedly good. I never really know what to expect when I read this series.
Women were being murdered and the one thing they had in common was that they had been raped. The kicker was they all identified the wrong man who was later cleared threw DNA. I did not finish this book. After the fifth wrongful identification and murder I said five different men five different rapes????
This was the first book I have read by John Lutz. It was an intense read that kept me on the edge of my seat. If you are a fan of a good murder mystery and don't mind some graphic details, this is a good pick.
The book focuses on a series of murders that happen to rape victims that mistakenly identify the wrong attacker. Subsequently, the wrongly accused attackers are released from prison based on DNA evidence. There are some unexpected twists as the plot unfolds. This was a story that was hard...more
