It surprised me to discover that amongst my various reviews, story pimping and other endorsements of Vs.Reality, I had failed to provide an opinion on here.

Anyway, anyone who hasn't read it yet? You really should. I won't rehash the synopsis, but what I will say is that it's fun, fast-paced, there's superpowers, violence and it has a distinct comic-book air that should lend itself well to the upcoming movie/graphic novel adaptations.

An excellent book. The characters were good and the dialog was natural. The arc of the book is great in that you care what happens but the outcome was not obvious. A fun read indeed.

My main issue would have been that as a Canadian author, she should have taken advantage of her first-hand knowledge and had the story center around Toronto, not New York. I enjoyed this book. It's a very interesting and unique take on the superhero genre as well as a quick and fun read. The only negative thing I can say is that the story pov was a little...different. There's nothing wrong with a 'now' pov, just something I'm not very used to reading. That said, though, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genre. I'm looking forward to the second book.

This debut novel from Blake Northcott jumps all over the place between parallel worlds and is populated with characters that can change their appearance and abilities with a wonder drug or sometimes at will.

It does have a ‘seen it all before’ vibe to it. The themes of a disparate group of people joining together and becoming superheroes has been done over and over in the last decade so if you are tired of ‘Heroes’, ‘X-Men’, ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Alphas’ then maybe this won’t be for you.

It does have a ‘seen it all before’ vibe to it. The themes of a disparate group of people joining together and becoming superheroes has been done over and over in the last decade so if you are tired of ‘Heroes’, ‘X-Men’, ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Alphas’ then maybe this won’t be for you.

It’s not perfect and it does read like a screenplay at times (little wonder that it is getting a film adaptation next year). That said I really enjoyed this short eBook.

Vs. Reality’s saving grace is its humour and sharp witty exchanges between its characters. It also tackles contemporary themes like commercialism, consumerism, wealth, greed, celebrity, fashion, entertainment and violent sports (Mixed Martial Arts fans will have a treat here).

There is also a very human element of longing for a better life and existence. Instant gratification in pill form together with wish fulfilment is a potent combination and Northcott exploits these base desires to the max.

Donovan is a decent down to earth protagonist who has taken too many beatings. The girl he meets, Dia is an alluring, attractive and confident heroine and makes things interesting. Factor in smart ass chemical student Brodie, Dia’s sensitive sister Paige and scrawny yet outspoken Jens (Donovan’s best friend) and you have a well rounded cast of likeable wanna-be heroes.

The bad guys are the traditional sneering type in Govinda and his henchmen: the emotionless giant Mr Heinreich and the cultured, urbane, charming yet deadly Goto.

There are some great set-pieces and lots of hectic action and fighting. The sheer chutzpah coupled with the wonderfully sardonic sharp-tongued humour raise this above the standard science fiction/superhero fare.

Wrapped up in this superhero universe are the darker modern day issues of addiction, self-harm and alienation. So it’s not just another superficial clichéd romp.

What I liked about it the most was that at its heart it is still basically a story about bickering siblings and their friends – something we can all relate to.

Above all this is a strong début novel. It is not perfect and it has its faults but it does have a lot of potential and I am sure the series will improve and continue on an upwards trajectory.

RE: a watershed novel

Blake Northcott's debut novel -- "vs Reality" -- contains a character who uses the word 'watershed' often and often in the wrong context. However, calling Blake's first installment in a planned 3-part series a watershed novel is not only the correct usage of the word, but apropos. I know, that sounds cheesy, but it’s true. You can tell that Blake Northcott put a lot of heart into her characters. And why shouldn’t she? Vs. Reality is her first novel, so it’s obvious that each of her characters is special to her. Donovan Cole, the down on his luck MMA fighter is exhibited superbly as the wannabe hero who accepts his destiny right off the bat. Dia Davenport is the beautiful yet fractured heroine who would rather live a life of running and stealing to survive than stand up to her pursuers and actually have a life. Govinda, the mysterious master-of-puppets out to capture Donovan and Dia. Nearly every scene with these characters is enjoyable and fun to read. Unfortunately, not all of them worked out so well. Many of the book’s supporting cast come off as bland and 2-dimensional, becoming less like characters and more like plot devices. Which is fine, in my opnion. Not all characters should be given the same spotlight, but I would have liked to see a little more, especially from the more important supporting characters.

The premise behind the story is good; yes, these people have extra special powers, but not all the time. They require a rush of adrenaline to access those powers, what Blake calls “manifesting”, and once that rush fades, the powers go with it. A neat little concept for a book about super heroes, I think.

Blake’s writing in Vs. Reality is a little flat. I’m not saying that Blake can’t write; if you’ve ever been to her website, www.blakenorthcott.com, it’s obvious that she is an excellent writer. But her prose comes off as stoic, which, again, makes since for her first novel. She is trying to convey her story in such a succinct and understandable way that she style has gotten lost. My hope is that for future novels, which luckily there will be for Vs. Reality, Blake decides to relax a little and let some of her own voice shine through.

All in all, Vs. Reality is a great read from a new writer. I admire Blake’s determination to write, edit, and publish her own novel, as well as her hard-work in marketing it herself. She has created an excellent product which is worthy of the attention it gets. I know that I’m in for the sequel.

Ordinarily a book of this caliber would merit a solid three stars. It was a solidly fun science fiction read with an interesting twist. The author's openness and fan-friendly nature definitely had an impact as I read the book and witnessed her personality shining through the pages, whether it was in some of the quirky, modern dialogue or through the personification of her comic book ideals. I bought Vs. Reality on the reputation that Northcott had already built up as one of my favorite bloggers and tweeters. The thing that impresses me most about her reviews is that Northcott seems to be one of the few people out there who understands that Entertainment Value is value.

So often we see fun movies, novels, and TV shows discarded because they aren't artistic or deep enough or because they *gasp* have some kind of mass appeal. Rarely do we see anything involving super powers getting any kind of praise by the serious critics because they forget that not every movie has the same purpose as Black Swan. Northcott has never been one to shy away from praising the commercial action movies, so I knew that no matter what, Vs. Reality was going to be fun.

Vs. Reality tells the story of Donovan Cole, a fighter who is used to concussions and beat-downs. When a chance encounter with a mysterious girl drags Donovan into her serious drama, Cole takes a hit that triggers a glitch in reality and allows him to manifest super-human abilities based on his own self image.

Vs. Reality blends the aesthetic of a comic book movie with the mind-f#@& of a Chuck Palahniuk novel. There's the suped-up action balanced well with gritty imagery. If there is one thing that I noticed straight from the start of Vs. Reality, it's that Blake Northcott is amazing at writing uncomfortable imagery. At her best moments, her imagery gives you a shiver reminiscent of that nails on the chalkboard sound. At the very least it makes me think of some of the more cringe-worthy impressions from the Aeon Flux cartoons.

In the end, Vs. Reality is a lot of things. It's an adrenaline rush. It's a commentary on addiction. It's the source material for a future summer Blockbuster.

Blake Northcott has created a slam-bang action story that rips and roars along, leaving you breathless. Try to keep up, because it's a fast, fun thrill ride.

People access powers and abilities, as in other stories that have been touched on in different media: Heroes, The Matrix, Jumper. There's a cadre of baddies, and a renegade band of good guys just trying to stay one step ahead of the Collectors.

This book rocked my world!!

I read this a while back just figured I'd do a quick review. I didn't know what to expect because I don't get the chance to read too many books, but Vs. Reality definitely rocked it. It was a somewhat short read, and I read it in two sittings, each about 90 minutes or so but I am a very fast reader.

TOTALLY AMAZING. Just finished this book so I wanted to write my first ever review. Very fast, very exciting read!! I can't wait for Volume 2.

I read this book all night and couldn't put it down. I felt like this could be a big budget action movie, like a summer blockbuster with superheroes, but Rated-R.

Anyone who is a fan of fantasy, action and adventure would love this, and the best part was the dialog. Some of the interaction between Cole (the main character) and his friend Jens was as funny as something you'd see in Superbad or a Kevin Smith movie.

I think this was a book that really had a chance to be good. The concept was interesting and the plot was fun, but when it comes down to it, there were issues I couldn't get past. The world created breaks its own rules often. The writing is loose and cliches appear far too often. The plot revolves primarily around Donovan Cole, Dia Davenport, and the manifestation of various superpowers. Sometimes these manifestations are `triggered' under duress, other times that have to be kick-started with a drug called Muse. Other characters include Dia's sister, Paige, and my personal favorites--Brodie and Jens. Then there are the three evil men out to `collect' the good guys.

If you're looking for action and humor, this is THE book to read. There's a point in the beginning when Donovan has won a UFC type fight and begins thanking his pool boy and the guy that cleans his Ferrari. Ms. Northcott's observations on human behavior is also worth noting. For example: A lot of people act a certain way at a bar or nightclub that's slightly out of character; they become willing participants in a form of theatre where they portray someone who's a cooler, sexier, smarter version of themselves - someone who's generally more attractive to the opposite sex.

Then there are the times when the dialogue is truly inspired, often reminding me of a Tarantino script: She sits up straighter in her chair, eyes widening with interest. "Wow, this isn't the typically boring, getting-to-know-you chit-chat, now is it? This is actually interesting. Don't hold out on me, cowboy, let's hear some juicy details."
One of Blake's strongest assets is her imagery style. For example: He tastes the coppery acid of his own blood dripping down the back of his tongue, filling his throat.

The story also offers commentary on various social issues such as drugs and addiction. The best authors include underlying themes within their stories, such as Stephen King's The Shining (alcoholism). Blake Northcott should count herself in good company. There's also a nice twist at the end I never saw coming, setting the story up perfectly for a sequel (which is due out soon).

To sum up: GET THIS BOOK!

DUDE. First freaking line!!! Right? First, we are witness to the near attack of a woman, who is "saved" by Goto and Mr. Heinreich only to have THEM turn around and abduct- I mean take her in for 'processing' and take her to 'The Basement'.

Loved the over all story although I am not used to reading many books in the narrative style/tense? that Blake choose, so it took a bit for me to get used to it. It is more geared I think to a comic book flow which I believe Blake explained was the stories original intend purpose.

Through part one of Vs. Reality, Blake discloses enough about each character to pique your interest but leaves enough hanging to make you want part two to hurry up and arrive.

I am being totally honest when i say great concept bad wording,editing, and sadly even passion. every person was described in measurements as if she was stating facts, as if she was a doctor making a daily check up. I wanted to hear her say lanky or small and thin not 5'4 and 120 pounds. Then there were so many editing errors i had to guess and think of what she meant. Lastly she sounded disconnected and unattached. oh but good concept and idea.

I'm a big comic book fan and follow the author of this book on Twitter so of course I spent $1 to support her. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will definitely buy the next part of the series. Blake has a straightforward writing style that manages to effortlessly blend violence and humor, often in the same paragraph. This book was a good short read. It had action, suspense, and superpowers. I can see what other people mean about this being like a comic book because you get super powers by taking a pill. But this is also has a feel of that movie Limitless with Bradley Cooper where he takes a pill and it kicks his brain up a few hundred notches to work perfectly.
Good way to spend a few hours.
