A good narrative that isn't well written. Over done prose, laughable dialogue, poor copy editing and typesetting... The book goes off on tangents that are just filler (knowing about the queen's close relationship with Brann, eg). The love plot has a rape component that is supposed to show why Freyja is how she is, but much of it reads as creepy and makes Brann's domineering feel really inappropriate. I have hope that with a much better editor that this could be much better.
Great! Valren was one of those can't-put-this-down-until-I'm-done books, which I love! The book is refreshing with its character development, a bit of romance, and detailed fighting. I love the fantasy aspect as well, as she has worked it so intricately into the story line. She's extremely descriptive, but not burdensome. I am really looking forward to the next book.
