Children; adults who love Curious George
Very well written and meticulously researched. Without having a story directly from the authors, Louise Borden managed to piece together their escape from Paris on bicycles during the Nazi invasion across the sea to Brazil and eventually the US. Tells how Hans carefully protected his manuscript of a mischievous monkey named Fifi (who eventually became George) throughout the journey. The illustrations by Allan Drummond are fabulous. At first, I thought it was H.A. Rey who drew them because th...more

We loved this book!
I read it with my 7 year old daughter and it really brought the abstract concept of what it meant to flee from a war into concrete terms. She was also quite fascinated by the way the Reys' life experiences came through in their books. We also loved the inclusion of real photos, drawings, diary pages, letters, identity cards, etc. along with the text and new illustrations.
We selected this book because it was on the William Allen White Children's Book Award list for 2007-2008. The ...more

I read Curious George and watch the tv show daily and had no idea until I came upon this book that Hans and Margret Rey escaped the Nazi invasion in Paris, leaving by bicycle, and made their way to Spain and Portugal to finally board a boat to America. The information was interesting but I would have liked more at the end as to how the original title of Curious George, the Adventures of Fifi was changed. The illustrations are colorful and will interest any reader who knows Curious George.

I'm interested in the process of writing --- authors' inspirations, practices, and experiences that lead to successful publications --- especially those of children's and adolescent literature authors. While I've heard much about the background of Dr. Seuss, I knew nothing about the creators of Curious George. This book was a simple yet fascinating chronicle of the Rey's experiences during 1930s and 1940s. And, of course, the illustrations are wonderful!

Did you know Curious George was originally called Fifi the Monkey? This is a really fun non-fiction book, and I don't always find a lot of those! It's the story of the Curious George author and his wife, and their escape from Paris on bicycles when the Nazis were coming to occupy the city. It's a fast read, and uses lots of HA Rey's famous illustrations, as well as some done in his style.

A picture book that tells the story of the Rey's escape from France during WWII. Includes some of the Rey's early drawings of Curious George at others of their characters. Also contains drawings in the style of the Rey's to complete the story. Told in a some detail, but still appropriate for children (although how do you explain Hitler to a 5 year old?).

This was a remarkable story of how Curious George, a little monkey loved by millions, almost was never published. During the reign of terror by the Nazis H. A. Ray and Margaret Ray escaped by bike across country and sailed over the ocean on a liner to America where they found refuge and a little monkey, George was printed.

A must-read for those of you who, like me, grew up with the curious monkey, and the man with the yellow hat. The story of the authors' bold escape from Paris on bicycles is told through their own notes and letters.

A really interesting story, even though it's a children's book; I would love to read more about the Reys.
