Tricia Goyer is a truly gifted author, and she puts in tons of research which makes her books even better. Her characters are realistic, they have human flaws, doubts. Her writing is fantastic, each page drawing you in until a little movie with Amelia and Quentin begins playing in your head.

Like many Tricia Goyer books, this historical romance has three main views: Quentin, Amelia, and Damien.
The book opens with Quentin as a young boy, who witnesses his mother drowning. Amelia is going to America, and as fate would have it, she meets Quentin and gives him her absent cousin's ticket to the Titanic.
This Titanic-themed Prodigal Son story has a decent writing style, however I am not a fan of romance and this had a little bit too much for my taste. And the romance seems a little fast-paced: she is (deeply) in love with 3 guys and each guy is in love with her - all in a matter of less than 24 hours. Well anyways, being they were only on the Titanic for 5 days, it's understandable. But still, unlike Tricia Goyer. Her WWII books were heavily researched and you could tell it - they read like a beautifully written memoir or a Laura Hillenbrand "live" biography (UNBROKEN!!). This one wasn't as realistic (as are most romances)
Her characters talk a little too detailed, like an author describing a room setting, which made it kind of weird.
However Tricia's other romances (From Dust and Ashes, Night Song, Dawn of a Thousand Nights) were Christian-based feels-like-nonfiction with minimal romance and were very believable.
Although a strong and proud Christian, I typically find Christian fiction boring, unrealistic, and cheesy. Tricia Goyer's books certainly aren't boring, but this one was border lining cheesy-Christian fiction. The last 50 pages were good, though.
One thing I admire: Tricia touches subjects most Christian authors wouldn't and they end (for this) is somewhat good.
If you like romance, I would recommend it. If you like romance or historical fiction or clean books, read From Dust and Ashes and Night Song first.

I have to say I was looking forward to this arc so much I read it in November before I realised I couldn't publish my review until February! I love anything set around the time of the Titanic in general, I a bit of a sucker for a love story which I know may have a bad ending, I mean we all know it sinks right?

This was my first time reading anything of Tricia Goyer, and I must admit that I was rather disappointed. The story started out rather well and had me intrigued. However, by the time I was in the 3rd chapter, my high hopes for it were beginning to sink.

The time period is set during the Titanic as Amelia and her aunt prepare to dock the 'unsinkable ship' on her maiden voyage to America. Throw in a mysterious stranger who gains the compassion of Amelia, a rich man who seems to have lost more than he can bear, and a son who cares more about what society thinks of him than he will admit.
I had several times throughout the book that I wanted to quit reading. However, I decided that I would continue reading to give it a fair chance. Goyer's writing style was easy to read and fairly enjoyable, but when it came to conversations and relationships, she really tanked. Her character development was also hard to follow. The one character that was half good was Amelia, although even she seemed to have a watery development that was hard to understand.
'By the Light of the Silvery Moon' was a romance, and I knew that when I picked it up, but I hoped that perhaps it would still be an enjoyable read. I dislike romance that isn't realistic. Propriety and modesty were all but lost in this book. The gentlemen were too forward for the time-period (although I am not saying that ungentlemanly men didn't exist, the men in this book were gentlemen and should have conducted themselves as such), and young Amelia didn't seem to mind a bit.
Amelia is setting out for America to meet a gentleman whom she has been in correspondence with. He paid for her ticket as he felt that he would like to get to know her better to possibly see if they had any future together. Thus sets the basic story line. However, Amelia seems all too anxious to leave this faithful fellow for the next handsome fella that comes along. Although she seems to have high standards and good faith in the Lord, she also seems to let those slide throughout the book. Goyer added a few plot twists that really didn't make sense in the book- such as Amelia trying to find out as much as she can about her lost mother. Although that might have added some interest to the story, it wasn't done well enough to actually pull through.
We all know how the Titanic met its end. Having researched lots on the Titanic, I was slightly disappointed with the historical details in the book. However, I didn't mind as much as it wasn't a very large part of the story. What did surprise and disappoint me, though, was the ending of the book. It felt very rushed and halted, jerking the reader around in a way that was rather dizzying.
All in all, I wasn't very satisfied with the book. I am still deciding as to whether or not I want to give Goyer another chance and read another of her stories. (less)

As circumstances would have it, Quentin’s father and brother are indeed aboard the Titanic. Quentin’s heart begins to soften, until he sees his need of Christ’s forgiveness and that of his father and brother. His father is elated, plans to throw a lavish party inviting everyone on the boat, but his brother is jealous and angry with the sudden appearance of the brother who had spend half the inheritance and had embarrassed the family.

As one expects from a romance novel, Amelia and Quentin fall in love, but so does Damien! Amelia is drawn to the once down-and-outer rather than the wealthy other son.

The story was enjoyable and entertaining, but I had hoped for a little more history and less romance. The story at times became a little shallow as the romance developed. I also thought that some of the characters were less than realistic. Amelia comes across as one of almost perfect character that is able to solve other people’s problems. She always has the wisdom and right advice to give to others in need. Damien’s character is left as wealthy, proud, and unforgiving, but less than developed, while Quentin is portrayed as the true Prodigal’s son, once a tramp, now forgiven and right with God and father.

At this point in the story, the Titanic hits the immense iceberg and begins to sink. The “unsinkable” is sinking. Many lives are lost; some are saved. It was a simple, charming story of forgiveness and redemption. (Reviewed by S.Fincannon)(less)

Little does she know that he is actually the estranged son of a wealthy businessman, and that both his heartbroken father and bitter elder brother are both also on the voyage. As the fateful journey continues, she finds herself -- and her heart -- even more entwined in their lives.

This Christian historical fiction romance novel grabbed my attention because it took place on the Titanic, which happens to be one of my obsessions. As a piece of fiction, it was kind of disappointing. As a Titanic novel, it was only okay. As a romance novel, it was actually pretty good. And as a piece of Christian literature, I was pleasantly surprised with how the author worked in a "modern" (well, 1910s) retelling of the parable of the Prodigal Son.

The Prodigal Son tie-in added a theological depth to the story that saved it from simply being "preachy." All three characters of the parable were portrayed realistically in the millionaire and his two very different sons, and in their reunion, their words were direct quotes from Scripture -- perhaps a bit too blatantly obvious, but it worked into the story without sounding too cheesy. The romance story line had enough ups and downs to make it believable, and I liked the ending, even if it was rather predictable. The author dealt with the actual sinking of the ship and its aftermath in a way that was heart-wrenching and reverent, very appropriate.

On the downside... the first few chapters of the novel were a bit hard for me to get through. There were way too many coincidental meetings with awkward dialogue (the ones that feel like you're in a RPG video game and are being forced to go talk to each of the townspeople somewhere, so they can quote you two lines that tie into the story line and give you the information you need... much too forced and unrealistic). There were also far too many foreshadowings of the ship's doomed future It seemed like every random stranger the characters encountered were either afraid the ship would sink, or be boasting about how the ship was unsinkable. I'm pretty sure we all know what happened to the Titanic, so these contrived conversations seemed even more convoluted.

Some parts of the story seemed underdeveloped. Amelia was an alright character if you could forgive her the flaw of having absolutely no flaws, but her backstory -- her search for her mother -- was never resolved. We're introduced to a shady character from Quentin's past, but it's a one-scene thing that never gets brought up again, even though I know if I were Amelia, I'd have wanted more of an explanation.

Overall: If you can suspend reality enough to handle characters and a plot that are a little too "perfect," and you're a fan of the Christian romance genre, you'll love this one.(less)

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking on April 10th, I wonder what that time was like. What were the hopes and dreams of the passengers and the crew. Many of those stories are gone forever. Tricia Goyer, wrote a story of what might have been.

For the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic, Tricia Goyer had written another great novel that would make any readers reminisce the love and tragedy of the Titanic accident. This Titanic-based story is not just for its 100th anniversary though, this book is for all seasons. So I do hope, I wasn’t too late of posting this review.

With refreshing new characters, a take on the prodigal son from the bible, a dramatic love story, this book deserves to be called outstanding.

As for me being a Christian, I was really moved by the religious moments in the book, but it isn’t over the line, so readers who are believers and non-believers alike could enjoy this classic tale of tragedy and love.

Each of the characters’ fate is interwoven beautifully. They have pasts that will tug at everyone’s heart, and they have to make decisions that are totally unselfish and hard. the author gave us glimpses to better incorporate in us why things happen and why the characters act the way they are. It made it easy for me to really get to the characters and feel with them.

The writing was phenomenal; there’s a lot of emotion in it, the plot was perfectly thought of and the mixture of fiction and facts made me think that the book was well-researched and is given emphasis up to the littlest detail. As a lover of historical fiction, I was satisfied and fed by some more..:D

Actually, it’s easy to think that the book wouldn’t be so interesting or suspenseful since we know what happened, right?—the Titanic sunk. But that knowledge only made it painful as we love and care for the characters. The question keeps popping at the back of my head, “When would the ship sunk?” Anyway, when it eventually happened, I was in tears, the brave orchestra players added to it when they still played even when the ship was sinking. I really felt like I was there with them, thinking of my love ones and the things I haven’t done yet. It was really tragic.

By The Light of The Silvery Moon is a heart-wrenching novel set in a dark time of human history—the Titanic. Packed with emotions, drama,love, action, forgiveness, faith and tough decisions for life, this book would surely keep you turning the pages. I couldn’t put it down, read it in one sitting! Actually, I was thinking of reading “Chasing Mona Lisa” another book from the author :D Highly Recommended!

This April marked a 100th Anniversary of that great tragedy known as sinking of the unsinkable Titanic. Ms. Goyer’s offer of a fictional story within this historic tragedy will touch your heart as much as James Cameron’s movie did.

To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of Christian lit. I rarely read it, if just because I dislike being preached at for 300 pages. I knew this book was Christian lit when I picked it up, but I've been on a massive Titanic kick lately and thought it looked interesting. The sample chapter also looked pretty good, a beautiful cover, and the reviews were stellar. The Christianity wasn't my problem with this book. There were preach-y parts, but they weren't overwhelming by any means, and I felt that, for the most part, I could skip right over them if I found them objectionable.

No, my biggest problems with this book concerning its one-dimensional, almost unbelievably simplistic characters; the boring, stilted writing; the bad dialogue; and the fact that despite being set on the Titanic in 1912, there was very little sense of time or place.

I never got any sense of the characters, that they changed in any perceptible way. Again, to be fair, I skimmed large chunks of the last 100 pages or so because it just didn't hold my interest. But what I did see of the characters was less than impressive. Amelia never rang true to me - she was almost what a fan fiction writer would call a "Mary Sue" - no faults at all. The author tries to manufacture faults for the leading man, Quentin, but he's so nobly self-sacrificing, it's difficult to believe he once led a totally dissolute life. Some characters pop up and then nothing is ever done with them that I saw - Dorothea, for example. Nobody really grew as a result of their experiences. I could not care about them at all.

The writing was bland, as well. The dialogue was stilted and expository and never really rang true - something seemed off, as if you couldn't quite imagine real human beings saying what Ms. Goyer had her characters say.

I'll also echo someone else here, and say you never really got the sense that the characters were aboard the Titanic, or even really that they were living in the beginning of the last century. There was no sense of time and place at all. Extremely disappointing, since I was reading it for the Titanic in the first place. There also seemed to be a disappointing number of historical inaccuracies as well.

Not at all recommended.(less)

I have always been a huge fan of historical fiction, and have been fascinated by the Titanic so Tricia’s latest book was a perfect marriage of the two for me!

Even though readers know what is going to happen regarding the Titanic, this book was interesting in that it gives some insight as to the frenzy taking place in the days prior to the ill-fated voyage. With almost the entire book taking place on board the Titanic the number of places and settings the characters can visit is rather limited, however it was handled very well. Amelia is a second class passenger, yet we also get some looks into first class and a couple glimpses into third class as well. The general feeling of awe over the design of the ship is continually felt, from first class down to third, and even in the actions and comments of the stewards and maids.

Unfortunately, the looming tragedy didn't allow the story to be completely enjoyable for me. It's definitely well written and well researched, but the entire time I had the question "when is it going to happen?" lingering in the back of my mind. I did enjoy the stories of Amelia and her acquaintances, but at the same time I felt sad knowing the fate that awaited them. They all felt completely safe on the "unsinkable" Titanic; crew members and passengers alike often praised the opulence and design of the ship. I imagine these types of comments actually were very common... yet I couldn't help but feel sad every time someone expressed their trust in the doomed vessel.

From what I know of the Titanic, everything seemed very realistic and I actually learned some things, too. It's hard to imagine living through such an event, but with the aid of fictional characters this book does give a glimpse of what it must have been like. It's hard to use words conveying enjoyment of a book that covers such an event, but if you have any interest in Titanic, I definitely would recommend this book. It's not particularly graphic, but I think it gives a good picture of the events as seen through the eyes of Amelia and her friends.

I was a die-hard Leo fan when the movie first came out and I always stop and watch it for a few minutes when it comes on TV. So when I heard about Tricia Goyer's newest book, I jumped at the chance to read it.

The story of the Titanic is familiar to many people, and it holds a lot of interest for people even today. Wrapping this story around Amelia's was quite intriguing. Amelia was a very sweet girl, and you are able to easily tell that she would help almost anyone and everyone. Quentin came across as quite mysterious. This made me want to keep reading to find out more about his story. Amelia's various romances were also interesting. The premise for getting her on the ship could have seemed a bit thin, but I think that it never really did. The use of letters from Mr. Chapman helped to really flesh out why Amelia would be so interested in meeting him. Amelia's on-board romances were a bit more standard, but they still were able to hold my attention.

I found that knowing about the fate of the Titanic helped to create an interesting sense of atmosphere to the book. As the time of the ship's accident crept nearer, it added an extra sense of urgency to the plot. The characters were all living their lives in a low-key fashion, but I wanted to be able to urge them to take care and enjoy their lives as much as possible. There is also a bit of intrigue in just trying to figure out who will survive the ship's sinking. I thought this was a very sweet and fun read. It's a rather quick read, and knowing the fate of the ship just adds to the plot. Fans of romance and history (specifically the Titanic) will find a lot of enjoyment in this book.

By the Light of the Silvery Moon is another addition to the "Titanic" bookshelf. It's also a re-telling of "The Prodigal Son", but mostly told from the viewpoint of Amelia. A re-telling of "The Prodigal Son" on the Titanic would be enough to convince me to pick this one up if I hadn't already! This one plays out as a great historical romance that Tricia did an exceptional job breathing life into, and also portrays a different version of the prodigal son from the Bible. The story has been repeated so often over the years that most of us know the facts by heart. By the Light of the Silvery Moon by Tricia Goyer is the second fictionalized account of the Titanic that I have read in the last month. I loved Goyer's descriptions of the ship from the finest rooms of first class to the staff quarters. Amelia's association with characters of three different stations - the first class Damian Walpole, the second class Quentin Walpole, and a stewardess - take her to all levels of the ship during her four day voyage. Most of the plot is set in the first and second classes, and I could picture the grandeur and stateliness of what was an unparalleled vessel. The cameo appearances of real-life passengers, John Jacob Astor and Margaret Brown added an extra layer of authenticity to the story.

The Titanic sinks near the end of the novel; and while I enjoyed the plot, characters, and historical details, there was the element of predictability. I initially expected the story to focus partially on the Titanic voyage and partially on life after the tragedy. I felt a sense of foreboding knowing the inevitable event that was going to occur and wondering what the outcome would be for the characters that were introduced. The back stories of Amelia and Quentin provided more depth and interest to the story. Amelia finds herself in somewhat of a love triangle between her potential suitor in America, Quentin, and his brother Damian. The question that lingers is who will capture her heart and who will survive the ship's sinking? The answer is bittersweet with heartwarming tones of love and sacrifice.

Tricia Goyer pays homage to the Titanic in By the Light of the Silvery Moon and preserves a bit of its history. There are so many real stories of Titanic passengers that we will never know, and reading a well-written and researched fictionalized account gives us insight into an event that should not be forgotten.

I was curious that several Titanic-themed books have come my way for review because I hadn't realized it was the 100th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy this year. I rarely buy books, but saw this in a Barnes and Noble while on vacation two days after the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking, so I picked it up. I read the prologue and was immediately drawn in by the tragic opening and decided I must read the rest of the book. I have a fascination with the Titanic's sinking and that whole tragedy anyway, so I couldn't resist the urge and ended up buying it. I'm so glad I did. I read the book in two days and enjoyed it very much.

I have a fascination with the Titanic's sinking and that whole tragedy anyway, so I couldn't resist the urge and ended up buying it. I'm so glad I did. I read the book in two days and enjoyed it very much.

There were so many things to like about this story. The author did a great job with setting and making me feel like I was there on the ship. Amelia was compassionate and a very likable heroine. The brothers were both endearing in their own ways. I felt pity for the father and his pain from not knowing the well-being of his youngest son. I loved how the author had written a parallel story similar to the prodigal son from the New Testament. Some of the dialog was even the same. That part of this book was particularly moving and brought tears to my eyes. Which one of us hasn't felt worthy of someone's love and forgiveness at some point in our pasts? The emotion of the characters as they dealt with repentance and forgiveness was very touching as was the way Amelia ministered to Quinton's spiritual needs.

The thing that intrigued me most about this story was not knowing which brother was going to come out as the survivor in the end. Not only that, but I was anxious about who was going to live and who was going to die other than the well-known passengers like John Jacob Astor. The description of the passengers' trauma following the sinking was well done. I can't imagine the survivor's guilt many of them must have felt. Each brother had special traits that the heroine loved, but she had to choose who would hold her heart in the end. At times I even fluctuated on who I thought that should be. This was a heartwarming story with a very satisfying ending. The romantic elements tugged on my heart strings as well. Highly recommended.(less)

I was immensely pleased with the research that the author did for this book. She added in everything from the near collision when it set sail to the screams of the doomed passengers in the water. For the first time, I understood why no one survived who was not in the lifeboat. And I understood the precarious position of those lifeboats. I know I may have heard it before, but suddenly it made sense.

I was enthralled by the story. I was able to tell early on that one of the stories was an updated retelling of the Prodigal Son parable. I loved the twist the author put in the story.

Amelia is a character that spoke to my heart--as did Quentin. I am amazed at how God continues to use historical Chrisitan fiction to speak to my heart. I have been blaming myself lately for the part I have played in my current domestic issue. I have found myself apologizing over and over for a decision I made some 10 years ago that is making this current issue possible. Well, I realized yesterday as I read that God orchestrated it all. It was not something I pursued or sought after. And God could have stopped it. But He did not. It happened, and even as I walk through my current pain, God has a purpose in it all. Just as Amelia and Quentin learned. How could the disaster of the Titanic been a part of God's plan? We may never understand it in this life. As an old song I know says: When you can't trust His hand, trust His heart.

I also loved the side note about John Astor. I will not spoil it for the reader, but it was pure genius, in my opinion.

In short, if you love historical fiction romances, this is for you. Yes, it has a strong Christian message, but it is woeven so seamlessly into the fabric of the story, I doubt it would truly bother anyone who is not a Christian. It may convict you, but the story line is so strong that I will bet you will not want to put it down.
