Prima di approcciarmi a questo romanzo russo nn avevo idea di chi fosse o come scrivesse Leskov, per cui mi ero creata un'idea totalmente diversa da ciò che poi ho letto con grandissimo diletto.
Innanzitutto ho scoperto un grandissimo narratore che ha mostrato una profonda intelligenza nel trattare un tema così scottante come quello della decadenza dell'aristocrazia russa, con un tono ironico ed una vena umoristica davvero irresistibili.

Una famiglia decaduta è considerato il romanzo che segna il vertice dell'opera di Leskov, autore considerato tra i migliori scrittori russi dell'800.

Christopher Domínguez la define así: “seca, ruda, basta”; para algunos, sería motivo suficiente para descartar su lectura. Para otros (en particular para quienes veneramos la literatura rusa), tal denominación nos conmina a adentrarnos en “Una familia venida a menos”, una novela portentosa, una memoria familiar que en realidad nos permite recorrer a la Rusia del siglo XIX.

Nikolai Leskov nunca se encontrará entre los escritores rusos más originales e innovadores (es demasiado intencionadamente arcaico para esto), pero sí que debe ser uno de los grandes maestros rusos de la narración, que no de la novela. Un vistazo al siglo XIX en Rusia.-

Género. Novela (fuertemente anclada en pasajes de la Historia pero no una novela histórica).

Lo que nos cuenta. Tras repasar los antecedentes familiares remontándose atrás en el tiempo, nuestra narradora comienza a contarnos la vida de su abuela, Varvara Nikanórovna , la última de la familia Protozánov que exhibió y disfruto de poder, nobleza y fama antes de que, como bien indica el título original, la familia cayese en desgracia.
