I didn't want this book to end. Jeffrey Wilson develops the plot telling just enough to keep you engrossed while moving the story along at a fast pace with the right amount of suspense. His style is fresh and clean. He moves Ben from combat to home, to dreams that seem real and provide physical evidence of reality. Ben and the U S Navy SEALS are an interesting and tight knit group that look out for each other in combat and at home. But Ben has secrets, that even he doesn't totally understand. Be...more

A man who chose to defend his country as a Navy SEAL discovers that fate has in store for him an even higher calling. In the Traiteur’s Ring, Jeffrey Wilson weaves a masterful tale of Ben Morvant, a Special Forces operator from Louisiana whose Cajun ancestry carries with it both a mysterious gift and a dark secret from his past. It is only on a covert mission in the art of al Qaeda controlled Africa that Ben comes to learn the true power that resides within him and the higher calling that he mus...more
This is an original idea. The military / supernatural aspect is very interesting and unique. I would encourage the author continue to try to mix the two in future works. However, this particular book had trouble deciding what its focus should be. Part of it was a well-written military action story, and part of it was a supernatural thriller lacking in focus and detail.

This book has a very unusual theme with excellent interaction of characters. Ben Morvant was brought up in the backwoods of Louisiana with his traituer grandmother who had some kind of mystical power. His memories of his time there haunt him into adulthood especially the vision of his grandmother covered in blood after killing what his mind recalls as a deer.

So this book came to me by way of the Goodreads FirstReads Giveaways. Yeah! Free book!
I kept looking at the title, and I just didn't get it because i was reading it as "traitor" and after getting into the book, i realized that "traiteur" is a cajun/creole way of saying a "seer" or someone who has a power or second vision or sight. That made a whole lot more sense.
Ben in the lead character, and he was born and raised in the cajun back-country by his Grammy, who was a seer of the area, she protect...more

This is an unusual concept for a story: a unique mix of military thriller and supernatural horror.
Ben is a rough, tough US Navy SEAL but he’s also got the mystical powers of a ‘traiteur’. It starts in the jungle where a group of SEALs are hunting down members of Al-Qaeda but it quickly spreads out to encompass voodoo, ESP and magical healing.
At first I found the military language annoying as I didn’t have a clue what they were talking abou...more

This was an okay book, definitely not my favorite. Normally, I'm a sucker for books that fall into the thriller/military genre, but I wasn't that thrilled about this one. Wilson did a fantastic job capturing the life of a deployed Navy SEAL--the jargon, the equipment, the emotion. I was definitely convinced. Additionally, the relationship between the members of Viper Team was probably one of my favorite elements in this book. Wilson captured so many perfect moments of camaraderie and brotherhood...more
The Traiteurs Ring by Jeffrey Wilson.
This book is a pish posh of genres. You have military, horror, occult, supernatural all mixed into one.
Ben is a Navy seal one of the best. However he is also a Traiteur (healer), hes kind of always knew this but he never had to face it until his deployment to Africa. While there he meets a village elder that gives him this powerful ring, he then witness's a horroriffic act of violence forever binding him to the little African village.
He then has to deal wit...more

The idea, to put paranormal event in a military setting, is great. Of course, it feeds the thought, Al Quaida would be a demon and nothing human. But as a book of fiction, it works.
Yet it took me a while to get into the story, in particular, because the first chapters I did not unerstand, where I am. The first chapters could have taken place everywhere. But at the moment, the surviging villagers vanished from the military camp, the author had got me.
He took me into a world, I knew nothing about....more

Bravo Jeffrey Wilson!
An unusual recipe, combining ingredients rarely mixed together in a book:
covert military missions, gruesome horror, non-stop thrills, and even romance blended together with an addictive Cajun hero and a dash of voodoo spice.
This book boils hot!
Jeffrey Wilson has concocted a masterpiece. I started this book with a fair amount of trepidation; with the many different genres it contained I was afraid it would fall flat on its face. Instead, after the first couple of pages, I f...more

I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the military aspect and the romance aspect, and the paranormal aspect.
There were a couple of spots that could have been fleshed out better, and Ben's (the lead) identity crisis was a little bit unbelievable. If you've been around the super natural all your life, you know it when you see it. He has a bad case of "I think he doth protest to much." Other than that he was a likeable character.
The terrorist aspect was a sign of the times we live in. With Al Queda being...more

Everyone who's looking for something unique, not soft cookie-cutter books
I won this book through the Goodreads First Reads program. I read the back cover and it looked really interesting and completely unique. I'm happy to say that it far surpassed my expectations. I loved the blend of military action and tribal fantasy. It's hard to make two opposites like that mesh so well together. Wilson created a fantasy inside a completely realistic situation. Every character had a distinct personality with rough edges that matched. I loved all the surprise twists, especially t...more

This was a really good book, using some aspect of modern turmoil (especially Al Quaeda) and adding in some paranormal aspects in the Traiteur (which is a type of healer, especially among the Cajun culture). One thing I found particularly compelling about the story was the interaction between the SEALS on Viper team; I had always wondered what it was that the men I've had in my life found so fascinating about the military life, and after reading this book and the way that Wilson helped to bring t...more
